Laying the Shaqdown

By sparty

stan-van-gundy-cryingNot a big fan of all the trash that Shaquille O’Neal has been known for talking all these years in interviews and press conferences. Where the majority find it funny and entertaining, I find it to be poor sportsmanship.  Never understood the need for someone who is so good at what he does, to talk so bad about his competition.  However, what happened yesterday didn’t bother me in the least.

First, a little background in case you somehow missed it. Stan Van Gundy, for whatever reason, took the opportunity to tell the media that he  was “shocked and disappointed” when he saw Shaq try to take a charge on Dwight Howard by flopping.  Was it a flop?  Probably so.  Even though Dwight Howard is a man-child, Shaq is still a monster that just doesn’t get knocked over. Van Gundy comes across here as very petty and whiny. This isn’t much of a shock.  The part that really bother me is when he said

“Let’s stand up and play like men, and I think our guy did that tonight.”

Come on Stan, you are kidding right? If you want that to be the case, you need to stop throwing your hands out in disgust at the refs whenever someone bodies up on D-Ho. I see you pop out of your seat every time the ball goes inside to him and he doesn’t convert the opportunity into points. You want them to play like men, stop whining like a little girl.

My words won’t reach Van Gundy.  But, that is okay, because the master at getting people on his side responded to Stan’s complaint in his own unique Shaqtastic way.

“He (Dwight Howard) came with the same old, stale Patrick Ewing move so I tried to stand there and take the charge. The new rules say if you come through, you fall. But as I fell, I realized that it was a flop and it reminded me of Coach Van Gundy’s whole coaching career. The one thing I despise is a frontrunner. First of all, none of his players like him. When it gets tough, he will become the master of panic like he did before and he will quit like he did before.

Oh, it gets better:

“When a bum says some (stuff) and I respond, you can (expletive) cancel that ’cause I know how he is in real life. We’ll see when the playoffs start and he (expletive) panics and quits like he did when he was here. Do I look soft to you like you can say something and I’m not going to say something?

Get’em Shaq! This is when I don’t mind Shaq firing back at someone. Van Gundy needed to let that one play go and not talk about it. It had no real impact on the game that his team won. All he wanted to do was lob a grenade at a player that he didn’t get along with while in Miami.

Stan, you want to play like men? Then, maybe you should be feeding the ball to that beast of a center you have rather than having your team chuck 25 3-pointers a night. The game is won in the paint, not beyond the arc. But go ahead and keep talking tough, right up until another team of yours flames-out in the playoffs against the Detroit Pistons (that was for GatorTrey and Knightro).

Bah. Shaq is being petty and immature. He makes it a personal attack when SVG is just talking about basketball. He’s a bitch, and I can’t stand him. He behaves the way most people grow out of sometime in high school. It’s pathetic. This type of behavior makes me think he is going to end up a very lonely and bitter old man.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

Shaq won’t be lonely as an old man. He is behind rich and the trend is to hire loud mouth moronic ex-players as commenters. Shaq will be on TV for a long time.

If ESPN could just fire Keyshawn Johnson I would watch their NFL coverage again.  (Quote)

Sean Jean- Van Gundy was completely out of line for the garbage he spewed. come on.  (Quote)

Why? He’s talking about basketball, and it’s true. I have no problem with him saying that. Shaq makes it a personal and petty attack, like he always does. They are two completely different animals. Not to mention the totally unnecessary disrespectful shit Shaq had already said about Howard, who couldn’t be a more likable guy. Reading the comments toward Howard just crack me up. ME ME ME ME. What a little baby.  (Quote)

Sean Jean, most of the time I would agree with you when it comes to Shaq, but not in this instance. I hear your argument that Van Gundy made it about basketball, but he lobbed the insult that Shaq didn’t play like a man. The man is very hypocritical.  (Quote)

sparty: I see what you mean, but I still think Shaq’s response was wildy more over the line than anything SVG said. The guy just seems like a world class prick.  (Quote)

  • guyinthecorner says:

From someone who has followed Shaq’s career meticulously…

Taking charges is part of basketball. Knowing where your opponent will go, getting there, and staying in place is a foul for a reason. It takes tremendous skill. Shaq is right. If he knew Dwight was making that move then the right move is to take the charge. As for whether or not it was a flop: Shaq is simply too big to go down if he doesn’t want to. On the other hand, NBA refs have never called charges on guys going at Shaq because of this. Therefore, Shaq’s form of taking a charge is simple. He stands there and takes it and simply doesn’t try to regain his balance. Shaq could have stumbled backwards and regained his balance, but the refs would never call the foul. Turns out, they didn’t anyway.

The bottom line is that it’s not fair. Shaq can’t take a charge because he’s too big? That’s wrong. If Nate Robinson runs full speed into a stationary Shaq, Nate might die. Would Shaq ever get this call? No. So it’s up to Shaq to fall down. That doesn’t mean that he should pull Bowen/Ginobili/Parker flops where he leans backwards and starts falling before the guy even gets there.

It was a charge. Shaq is right. Van Gundy is wrong. DHo is not close to Shaq yet. Dho stole the Superman thing.  (Quote)

  • HuskerDawg says:

I like Shaq for his quotes but if Howard had pulled that Vlade-esque move he would have ripped him for a week (at least). Shaq had a great run of games and the mouth came back. I see Shaq as the kind of guy who can dish it out like crazy, but when it comes his way he gets really defensive.  (Quote)

The bottom line is that Van Gundy originally said something about Dwight being a man about it. That implies that Shaq was being not a man. To imply that is to ask for the lashing that comes with crossing Shaq. Dumb move.  (Quote)
