My Maiden Voyage

Submitted by HuskerDawg on March 4, 2009 – 1:00 pm58 Comments

ship2I suppose, since this is my maiden voyage with Sparty and Friends, I should introduce myself and explain a little bit about where I will be coming from. I chose the handle ‘HuskerDawg’ because I am a badass was born in Lincoln, NE, grew up going to Husker football games and continue to openly root for a sinking ship. The second half of my nom de guerre comes from the fact that I graduated from the University of Georgia. This means two things. First, I hate Auburn. Now, that does not mean that I will never give them props, nor does it mean that I will always hate on them. It simply means that when they do screw up—see: Chizik, Gene—I will laugh into the night as I know that they will always be a second tier SEC team. Second, this means that I feel the SEC is the Ubermensch of the college football world. Sorry, there is a mandatory class for all SEC students that essentially brainwashes this ideal into our subconscious. It’s not that we’re all douchebags—save for Auburn fans—it’s just that we have been around the goods far too long. Imagine dating Marissa Miller for four years and then ending up with Janeane Garofalo.  You’ve seen the best, but are now stuck with freaking Janeane Garofalo.

The problem with being an SEC fan as well as a Husker is that, come basketball season, I haven’t a team to root for. The SEC comprises of 11 teams that don’t give a crap plus Kentucky. Nebraska cares, I’ll give them that. Too bad caring hasn’t translated into any tournament wins (0-5 last time I checked). Seeing as how I don’t have a horse in the race, I feel that my job should be to tell it like it is to college basketball fans. You won’t find me coddling the emotions of Duke fans when they get bumped in the 2nd round—again!—by a team that has athleticism at more than one position. Nor will I take is easy on UNC followers when they flame out in the Elite 8 due to the fact that Roy Williams is a terrible in-game coach. On a side note, does anyone else think that Williams is the Mack Brown of college basketball? He recruits his ass off every year but he only has one title to show for it. Remember when UNC was proclaimed the next great team in college basketball? I guess the pre-season prognosticators didn’t factor in defense. You know…the other half of the game.

Staying with basketball, I should also tell you that I am an avid NBA fan.  You can imagine my state of mind seeing as how the Atlanta Hawks are actually playing competent basketball for the first time in nearly a decade.  If only they had drafted Chris Paul insead of Marvin Williams.  Damn you Billy Knight!!  I believe LeBron is better than Kobe if I had to choose one player to have for an entire season.  I would, however, choose Kobe if I needed to win one game.  I believe that Shaq will be sorely missed upon his retirement.  Who else could refer to other NBA players as barbecued chicken?  I also believe, whether I like it or not, that the Celtics would beat the Lakers in a 7 game series this year should they meet again.  I have been known to get a little sensative when people argue that the NBA is the resident thug league in American sports.  Yes, Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson are still here, but I’m pretty sure the NFL has the NBA–and all other leagues combined–beat by a wide margin for that prestigious title.  But seeing as how Americans love us some football, we overlook the fact that many of the players are batshit crazy.  Don’t get me wrong, I love footbal as much as the next guy, but the players are totally insane.

I suppose I have introduced myself enough. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks I’ll get to know you and you’ll get to know me and all will be right in the world. So with that I’ll leave you with the random YouTube video of the week. See you next Wednesday.

Holla.

I think things are looking up for the Huskers, I like what Bo started this year, just wish they didn’t have to keep having such a revolving door at QB.

I am one who believes that NEB will never be more than an occasional top 10 team. They have no recruiting base and they are approaching a decade of mediocrity. What helped NEB land so much talent in the 90’s was a dominant system, hall of fame coaches and the fact that they were nationally televised. Nowadays everyone is televised and NEB’s system isn’t dominant. I do like what Pelini has done. He redhirted almost the entire class last year which will help. The QB is a major concern though.

It all goes in cycles, the fact that Nebraska was able to win at least 9 games every season for 35 something years is incredible. They will be back at some point.

You’re right about OU…but, do you think Pellini is NEB’s Stoops? I am not that big of a fan of Stoops but he is one hell of a coach. I would like to see what Pellini does with a new QB. I like the kid out of TX they signed but he looks like a project.

Michigan State’s recruiting has improved drastically. Dick-Rod recruits all over, so that left the entire state open to Dantonio to collect. He also has great ties in Ohio because of his stint as DC at Ohio State and when he coached at Cincy.

I think I’m starting to like this Pens team a little bit. The guy they got from the Ducks seems fairly decent and a good fit. Getting Gonchar back was a big lift. Ditching Terrian was a good move. Guerin should be a somewhat decent fit, hopefully playing sort of the Ryan Malone type role from last year
