Wait…I’m Confused…

As I’m sure you’re aware, the 2009 NFL combine wrapped up this past weekend. Therefore, the NFL draft season is now in full swing and there will be Mel Kiper hair references and Todd McShay’s a moron utterances aplenty in the next couple of months.

Concerning the combine…many times there will be a player or two that really jump out and blow the socks off of some unsuspecting scouts at the draft. Well, unless I’m just way out of the loop, there didn’t seem to be a lot of that “WOW!” created by anyone in particular this year. Yeah, there were some good 40 times and guys that upped their draft stock, but nobody seems to have left Indianapolis after this past weekend raving about a player and thinking they just have to get him now.

That being said, I am dumbfounded by one thing in particular – did former USC quarterback Mark Sanchez do himself a favor by throwing at the combine or did he do the opposite? Seems like we’ve got some differences in opinion…

Russ Landy, SportingNews/NBCSports.com:

Southern Cal’s Mark Sanchez helped himself in passing drills and tests. He showed a quick, compact delivery and release. He drove into his passes and the ball exploded out of his hand. His throws had good velocity and a tight, clean spiral. With Georgia’s Matthew Stafford choosing not to throw, Sanchez proved their competition to be the draft’s top quarterback is far from over. Teams were impressed that Sanchez decided to throw and did not look nervous or anxious.

Tony Pauline, Special to S.I.com:

Sanchez struggled most of the day and may have pushed himself out of the draft’s first 10 selections. He was accurate throwing between the numbers, but Sanchez sprayed the outs and was very inaccurate with his deep outs. Most worrisome is Sanchez showed marginal arm strength and on a number of occasions receivers were slowing up in their deep patterns as his passes were underthrown.

CFN/FoxSports.com:

Almost all the question marks about his character and his desire to be anything but special were answered in Indianapolis. He might not have the greatest arm of the prospects, but it’s more than good enough. He’ll need a year or two of seasoning, but Kansas City needs an upgrade at quarterback in a huge way.

I’m not missing something here am I? There aren’t more than one Sanchez’s running around out there, are there?

(GITC Note: H/T to Colin Cowherd on this topic. Miz posted this without knowing that Colin Cowherd did a very similar bit during the opening of his show on ESPNRadio on Monday. Here is the clip of you would like to hear it. Check the 3 minute mark.)

I don’t understand the hoopla over the combine.

I know the level of play rises substantially from college to pro, but wouldn’t watching tape of the guys, I don’t know, actually playing football, be far more valuable then watching them do a bunch of drills?  (Quote)

Here’s some more to add to the confusion. Don Banks has Sanchez going ahead of Stafford, but neither one is going in the top 5.

cbh–If you ever get a chance to watch Arrested Development, do it…it was a great show…still not sure if it’ll hold up for an entire movie.  (Quote)

One workout does not make a good player. If he had an off day so what. Maybe I don’t get the combine

And Arrested Development should never have been cancled. Fox didn’t know what to do with it and thus didn’t promote it at all.  (Quote)

Arrested Development was a great show that didn’t receive it’s due. I can never get enough David Cross! On that show, any other, or stand-up.  (Quote)

Arrested Development was AWESOME…is everyone from the cast signed on for the movie?

NFL combine is just a little time-waster for the NFL. Get all the little boys together to show some talent 2 months before the draft, and get the media’s panties all in a bunch over nothing.  (Quote)

Each character in Arrested Development had their little quirks and portrayed them perfectly…they did a great job with their casting…I actually hadn’t heard of the show when it first came out…I was so glad I stumbled onto it.  (Quote)

    so, sanchez sucks?  (Quote)

  • Johnny says:

Yes Jen the entire cast, and the creator, and Ron Howard are all involved. it’s going to be amazing

I think it started out after the Simpsons but then it got moved to Monday and finally they aired the last 4 episodes up against the opening ceramonies of the winter olympics one year

I get nervous when they remake TV shows into movies, because they generally aren’t very good. That said, I really hope they make a Jack Bauer movie sometime soon.  (Quote)

In Kiper’s chat today, he said Sanchez’s stock was up after the combine. So apparently he doesn’t suck.  (Quote)

    Johnny~ That is excellent.

John~ IKWYM about TV to the big screen. As the token S&F female, I can say that the “Sex and the City” movie was great.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

AD just didn’t get watched by a lot of people no matter what slot it was in…I usually recorded it since I was usually busy during the time it was on, but I always watched it. One of the shows I watch now (and hopefully it’ll return soon), Pushing Daisies, is in that good show with no audience category for some reason too…I hate when that happens…same thing happened to Dead Like Me which was on Showtime for only 2 seasons.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

Jen–And as someone who has unfortunately seen the S&TC movie, I can say meh…totally didn’t enjoy it one bit, aside from the few funny parts.  (Quote)

  • Jen says:

That’s because you’re a boy, rek. Boys shouldn’t like S&TC unless they are named A-Rod or Jeter.  (Quote)

Was in a packed theater for “The Departed” with 12 other guys in our group when the “S&TC” Trailer first came on… One of my friends has impeccable comedic timing, and as soon as the trailer ended he said, loudly enough for everyone to hear him, “Wow! I cannot WAIT to not go see that movie!”

Couldn’t hear most of the next trailer because people were still laughing at him.  (Quote)
