Regular readers, lurkers and commenters have come to find that the most popular topic to argue lately has been which conference is better in college basketball. We all know that it is really the Big 10, but it is much more entertaining to argue between the Big East and the ACC (actually, it is just really fun to watch Patphish and GITC go back and forth every single time the discussion comes up).
This isn’t something that only Sparty & Friends argues about, but the talking heads at ESPN discuss it each Saturday on College Gameday. You hear the same arguments from them as you do from us (something tells me we will be reading them again soon). You know, RPI, SOS, # of teams in the Top 25, or who will get more teams into the tourney. My personal favorite is seeing who has the most teams get the furthest in the tourney. That is a much better indicator of quality depth, IMHO.
Anyway, that is common place stuff that you get to read all the time. But what do the player’s and coaches think? The Sporting News was able to grab a couple interviews and that topic came up.
First was an interview with Terrance Williams of Lousiville (prior to their blowout loss to Notre Dame ).
Q: Where do you stand on the debate about which conference–the Big East or ACC–is college basketball’s best?
A: The Big East. I don’t know how you could even ask that. That’s easy. That’s not even a question.
Q: Why is that?
A: Look how physical we are. The ACC, that’s not physical. Our last-place team in the Big East could win in the ACC. We’re the toughest conference.
Q: What’s the best team you’ve faced this season?
A: That’s easy, Connecticut. We lost to them.
Not sure I completely agree with the his second answer, but I can go along with the Big East being a more physical conference, which does matter in March. UConn is the best team.
The rest of the Terrance Williams interview . Now players talk a lot of junk, But what about a coach? Enter Bobby Huggins.
Crossman: It’s a good year for the Big East this year, don’t you think?
Huggins: A good year? Try maybe the best conference in history. (No word if Bobby is drinking again)
SN: Really?
BH: Our top 12 teams are unbelievable.
SN: How do you prepare to play in a conference that good?
BH: It’s hard. That’s why we beat each other up. Everybody’s saying Connecticut is one of the favorites to win a national championship. A lot of people think Pitt’s the same way. You just go through the top people in our league–if Marquette gets the right matchups, Marquette’s a Final Four team. Villanova has everybody back from a Sweet 16 team, and nobody even talks about them. They’re good.
SN: You guys are 16-7, and you must be having a hard time keeping your head above water.
BH: We are. It’s an unbelievable league.
Here is more of the Bobby Huggins goodness.
I will just sit back and enjoy some of the responses.

Great pic, I love the gold on gold.

While it is a close call, Big East football is not quite as good as ACC football. Both pretty much suck, but the ACC may be the smartest retard. And Duke sucks. patphish(Quote)
UNC is the only ACC team with a shot of winning it all.
Duke – no interior
WF – depth
Clemson – a darkhorse…but I don’t still don’t see it GatorTrey(Quote)

I would say that Wake actually has a chance. But on the other hand, how many Big East teams have a real shot at winning it all? I say it’s only UConn. Pitt is the textbook example of a team that will flame out because all they need is Sam Young to get in foul trouble in one of six games and they are essentially done. I really like Louisville and they were one of my preseason Final Four picks. But after watching last night, I just don’t think they have it. guyinthecorner(Quote)
One game and UL doesn’t have it? UL is GOOD. Don’t think that one game should even be a synopsis of the whole season.
As for Pitt…seriously? Sam Young foul trouble? He’s been in foul trouble in THREE games this year.
Take those blinders off, Pitt is a final four team too. GatorTrey(Quote)
As for Wake, they played a weak out of conference schedule that inflated their standing. In the last 3 weeks…they’ve lost to Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, destroyed by Miami and NC State.
They’re solid, but not deep enough to make a final four run. GatorTrey(Quote)
Such a subjective question. I am a Big East fan since I like Syracuse. I would say if the criteria is top 4 teams then ACC and BE are close. Depth of conference it is the BE. Even South Florida, Rutgers and St. Johns are not bad teams but just play a brutal schedule. Of course sheer number of teams is a little slanted to the 16 team BE conference so just using number of teams in the tournament is a little off.
What I find more interesting was the power play by the ACC to try and destroy the Big East by sucking off its top 3 football teams. While the BE had a down year this year in football, over the last few years, the BE has been better in football in terms of rankings and bowl game victories. And as far as basketball goes, the BE got rid of two of its bottom dwellers in hoops and replaced them with Cinc, Louisville, and Marquette – a huge upgrade even if you take the loss of BC into account. cycledan(Quote)

The top 4 teams are close but the Big East wins depth? What? After the top 4, the Big East has 3 teams that are in the pretty good category (WVU, Cuse, Nova) whereas the ACC has 4 (FSU, VaTech, BC, Miami). When it comes to teams in the good category the Big East has 3 (G’Town, ND, either Cincinnati or Providence because both teams could be good or bad depending on the night) whereas the ACC has 3 (MD, GT, NCST). When it comes to bad teams the ACC has just one (Virginia) and the Big East has five (Seton Hall, DePaul, South Florida, Rutgers, and St. John’s).
I still don’t understand how this is an argument. The tops might be close, if you squint a little the middle might even be close, but the bottom is easily better in the ACC. guyinthecorner(Quote)
I wholeheartedly disagree that Rutgers isn’t a bad team…I mean, yea, their schedule is pretty brutal being in the best conference around, but they’ve lost some bad OOC games (SUNY Binghamton?!?!)…they get some decent recruits, but can’t seem to build a good team around them. rekcalsa(Quote)
I also don’t get the whole “preparing to play in the Big East” thing. Even the Big East coaches would have to admit that from a preparation standpoint, it has to be harder in the ACC. Your only games off are both home and road with Virginia and either home against NC State or Georgia Tech depending on which one decides not to show up. So 3 games off tops. Virginia doesn’t get any of those games. They only get road games against NC State and Georgia Tech and they don’t get to play themselves. Check out Virginia’s conference schedule and tell me they have shot in hell even if they were good. guyinthecorner(Quote)

I think Rutgers is awesome too…but I think their men’s basketball team sucks…the women aren’t too good this year either. rekcalsa(Quote)

Virginia Tech pretty good? They lost to Seton Hall (in your bad) and Georgia (the worst team in the worst of the major 6)…they’re good at best.
GT good? Seriously? They lost to Illinois-Chicago! They needed a couple late free throws to beat Jacksonville! They’re under .500… they’re awful!!
I can go deeper, but these two examples alone are enough… GatorTrey(Quote)
Trey, you are back on retainer. Thanks for making all of my arguments for me. I’m a very good client, I answer everything with either:
“I’m going to have to refer you to my legal representative”
or
“Duke sucks” patphish(Quote)
The Big East is definitely better than the ACC. The depth of talent is much deeper in the Big East whereas in the ACC after Carolina it kind of falls off. Duke will obviously make the tournament but they will probably end up losing in the 2nd round to a nobody. The Big East teams have much stronger depth and are built to survive the tournment.
