Michael Jordan, Steve Kerr, and John Paxson….all three Chicago Bulls…all three hit title clinching shots. All three have secure legacies in the NBA.
Somewhere along the line, team owners felt that the success the three players had on court would translate into front office success as well. Well, with Isiah Thomas gone, it seems more like each is trying to hit the title winning shot to claim a championship as worst executive in the league.
Michael Jordan is the best player to ever play the game. Six Rings, 5 MVPs, 14 All Star games are among his accomplishments. Will he become the first two time “Worst Executive Ever” to add to the total? Jordan has already failed miserably with the Wizards. During Jordan’s tenure the team went only 110-179…traded Rip Hamilton for Jerry Stackhouse, drafted bust Kwame Brown and ultimately did so little for the franchise that he ended up losing his job. It isn’t as though Jordan completely screwed the team though…he was brought in to help improve the team and failed.
Robert Johnson took a flier on Jordan’s popularity and his hope that Jordan could also help improve the Charlotte Bobcats. Although the jury is still out on the Bobcats long term outlook, Jordan’s draft selection of and subsequent trade of Adam Morrison brings to light his affinity for being a poor evaluator of talent. It may be time for Jordan to fade into the background and let a basketball mind take over in Charlotte..it is clear that he is not interested in building a team…and his front office forays have been nothing more than a curious desire to hang on to his past glories.
John Paxson took over the Bulls in 2003 when it became clear that Jerry Krause no longer wanted to chase the dream of showing the world that “great organizations, and not great teams” win championships. Since 2003 the Bulls have been on again / off again as title contenders. Paxson has drafted reasonably well bringing in talents like Kirk Hinrich, Ben Gordon, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Derrick Rose (the jury still being out on Joakim Noah)…but the acquisition of and subsequent trade of Ben Wallace seems to stick out more than any good Paxson has brought to the team. As far as execs go Joe Dumars is head and shoulders above many a GM in the NBA…and if he wasn’t willing to go the extra mile to retain Wallace – all other GMs should have questioned their own selfish motives before signing Big Ben. The Bulls are 190-217 in Paxson’s tenure.
Where Jordan and Paxson were tasked with turning teams around and having mixed results, Steve Kerr was handed a perennial title contending team and has completely dismantled it. Whereas it can be argued that Mike D’Antoni may never win a title with his style of basketball, Kerr’s hiring coupled with his trade of Shawn Marion to Miami for Shaquille ONeal completely changed the chemistry of the team and destroyed any chance that we will ever find out about D’Antoni’s schemes winning a title . The core of the team has been gutted…Kurt Thomas, Boris Diaw, Raja Bell, the aforementioned Marion and now the rumors swirling around Amare Stoudamire being traded will send the Suns back to the bubble in the West…this even though the west has become the easier division to contend in.
Jordan, Paxson, Kerr, and Isiah Thomas have all been terrible executives. Add to the list Kevin McHale, and despite what the Celtics are doing now Danny Ainge has been a terrible executive. In fact the only former star in recent years to have a successful tenure as a GM has been Larry Bird. That is 1 of 7 off the top of my head – and I am sure I am leaving someone out. Is it not apparent that being a GM is much like being a coach in that the most successful ones are rarely the ones that had tremendous success on the court?
Those who can – do…those who cannot – teach.
You want your team to have success…pray that ownership doesn’t hire a former NBA All Star to run your team.
Ed Note: Commenters correctly pointed out that Larry Bird’s success was mainly the result of Donnie Walsh’s work…this makes Ainge’s one championship with the Celtics more impressive than Bird’s zero. Additionally, I mentioned Dumars brilliance earlier in the post, however failed to name him in the recollection of the post when naming GMs. In retrospect Joe Dumar’s is the exception to the rule when it comes to star players as GMs in the NBA. Ainge did win a championship with the Celtics which arguably makes him a close second to Dumars, however – Ainge was not considered a good GM until he got help from his former Celtic buddy and fellow terrible GM, Kevin McHale.

How can Ainge be terrible with one championship and Bird be successful with no championships? john(Quote)
uh oh. sparty(Quote)
fair criticism… mikeychx(Quote)
McHale has a championship as a GM. sparty(Quote)
i guess because i took into account the sustained success of the pacers while bird was in charge and looked at ainges track record before he lucked into KG mikeychx(Quote)
do you think McHale wears his ring from last year in public? sae(Quote)
john…how did you feel about ainge before last year is a better way to answer my question for me mikeychx(Quote)
seriously, Ainge was throwing shit at the wall previous to the KG and Ray Allen deals. sparty(Quote)
When was the “on again”? knightro(Quote)
how about danny ferry? jpmanahan(Quote)
and the bulls drafted aldridge but immediately dealt him for tyrus thomas and viktor khryapa, is viktor even playing? sae(Quote)
06-07 mikeychx(Quote)
I thought Ainge did well all things considered. He has always done well in the draft, considering where they have picked from. Not sure anyone else could have made the C’s a contender any sooner or in any other way. john(Quote)
Paxson absolutely butchered what should have been a sure thing in Chicago. He is worse than Jordan.
Jordan has been terrible but him getting rid of Juwan Howard and Rod Strickland’s contracts was one decent thing he did in Washington. cbh49er(Quote)
seriously though…steve kerr has completely fucked the suns mikeychx(Quote)
Grunfeld was doing alright in Washington until he absurdly resigned Gil and let Mason go. cbh49er(Quote)
isn’t Magic one of the suits for the Lakers? mizerle06(Quote)
khryapa played…. i think he is back in euroland. jpmanahan(Quote)
steve kerr is the new isiah thomas mikeychx(Quote)
…at least he was throwing. john(Quote)
magic is a suit but hes a figurehead…kupchak pulls the strings
best all star then gm combo of all time
1. jerry west?
2. larry bird?
consider both accomplishments when discussing mikeychx(Quote)
Larry Bird? seriously, what are you smoking? sparty(Quote)
west…
the gold standard. jpmanahan(Quote)
the pacers would have been to the finals 3x if not for the bulls mikeychx(Quote)
the Pacers? he was the coach back then. not a front office guy. sparty(Quote)
btw, geoff petrie rebuilt sac-town in its glory years in the late 90s-early 00s.
petrie is a former player.
if you want bad… how about my clips’ elgin baylor… two names: korolev and olowokandi. jpmanahan(Quote)
if we are going to include coaching success, Phil Jackson is head and shoulders above everyone. sparty(Quote)
i thought he was both…my bad mikeychx(Quote)
…and Bird had Donnie Walsh to help him out. john(Quote)
phil was never a gm though… mikeychx(Quote)
maybe i should edit that part then and just call it a clean 0-7 since walsh left the pacers havent done anything mikeychx(Quote)
Bird did a great job as their coach, but Donnie Walsh was the guy working behind the scenes. even when Larry Legend took over as president of basketball operations, it was still Donnie Walsh making the moves. sparty(Quote)
breaking news…gammons just interviewd arod…he admits to taking PEDs…hes going phelps route!!! mikeychx(Quote)
clap clap clap clap clap clap for a rod mikeychx(Quote)
take that Rosenthal! sparty(Quote)
ill keep you posted with a post a soon as info becomes available mikeychx(Quote)
I don’t think Kerr ruined anything in Phoenix. That teams window was closing, they weren’t going to win a title anyway, he’s rebuilding them now. They need to move Shaq who has gotten some value back since he has played well, and if Amare is unhappy trade him too. cbh49er(Quote)
breaking part 2…barkley back on tnt after all star game mikeychx(Quote)
i think it is too early to judge Kerr. sparty(Quote)
it pains me to call kerr out…he was always one of my favorite bulls mikeychx(Quote)
arod says he only used for a limited time in 02 with texas mikeychx(Quote)
Ainge and Bird are good (not great) and the rest suck. Sooo, if you’re an owner, your first rule should be not to hire a former player to be GM of your team.
That said, I’d love to see what Barkley could do with a team. john(Quote)
oops 2001 to 2003 for the PEDs mikeychx(Quote)
breaking news(?) – ARod admits his PED use… mizerle06(Quote)
well, he was obviously using in Spring Training in 2003. sparty(Quote)
breaking news(?) – more info mizerle06(Quote)
but what he doesn’t tell you, is that he (along with everyone else) started using HGH after they got busted. Him and Sheffield on the same team in 04 and 05. A-Rod was huge. sparty(Quote)
go figure 52, 57, and 47 HRs in those seasons (48 in 2005 and 54 in 2007 when he supposedly wasn’t juicing) sae(Quote)
breaking news(?) – some relevant stats mizerle06(Quote)
Is this A-Roid/Gammons interview going to be on ESPN, or did Gammons just talk to him off camera? john(Quote)
FROM THE GAMMONS/A-ROD INTERVIEW
A-Rod felt pressure when he came to Rangers in 2001, was stupid, naive, and wanted to prove he was worth the 252M. A-Rod admits he was negligent and says he knew what he was taking was illegal but can’t name the exact drugs. When 2004 rolled around and there was real testing and penalties he stopped. He apologizes to his friends, family, and fans for everything he did.
He actually looked pretty truthful. guyinthecorner(Quote)
They only showed a short clip on ESPN. The whole thing will air at 6pm SportsCenter. guyinthecorner(Quote)
…just like he did in the Katie Couric interview. john(Quote)
i got the clip for ya..ill up load it so you dont have to wait three hours…gimmie a few mins mikeychx(Quote)
.
/fixed sparty(Quote)
mikey-
That was just a short clip. They won’t do the whole thing till 6pm. guyinthecorner(Quote)
“Rodriguez also said of his 2007 interview with Katie Couric on “60 Minutes,” when he denied ever using steroids, that “at the time, I wasn’t being truthful with myself. How could I be truthful with Katie Couric or CBS?”"
sounds like an alcoholic sharing at a meeting… sparty(Quote)
I don’t believe him, but for his sake I hope he’s telling the truth, because every investigative reporter is going to now try to prove he did ‘roids outside of his admitted dates.
/long sentence’d john(Quote)
This guy could play for the Orioles and I would still consider him a tool. cbh49er(Quote)
Cal Ripken juiced. sparty(Quote)
Everything about him is fake, how he acts, he just always sounds like he is saying what he thinks he wants people to hear.
Another reason I am not surprised he would cheat is hit little girly slap in the ALCS in 04. cbh49er(Quote)
OTL coming soon…. jpmanahan(Quote)
cal ripken absolutely juiced…juice promotes healing mikeychx(Quote)
Sparty you just crushed my world.

So in conclusion, A-Rod sucks as an NBA GM. john(Quote)
exactly. sparty(Quote)
fuck this video is takin forever to upload mikeychx(Quote)
Your taking forever to upload! There I said it. Are you happy? GatorTrey(Quote)
How do you forget Joe Dumars as a successful player and GM? He was a 6-time allstar, and Finals MVP and now one of the best GMs. henry8minus1(Quote)
he did compliment Dumars. sparty(Quote)
Besides the Darko pick, the Billups trade, half his other draft picks being crap, falling into a Rasheed Wallace trade.
he’s the best GM out there… GatorTrey(Quote)
Just saying that in his 1-7 record doesn’t count Dumars who he credits as one of the better GMs henry8minus1(Quote)
How did Darko workout for the Magic? Thanks for Stuckey. sparty(Quote)
Otis Smith, Magic GM, was an original Magic player.
He’s done a pretty good job. GatorTrey(Quote)
Well, he opened salary to sign Rashard Lewis.
Lewis > Stuckey GatorTrey(Quote)
i think kupchak was a former player as well. jpmanahan(Quote)
funny. last time i remember the teams meeting in the playoffs, it was Stuckey kicking their ass. We’ll do it again. sparty(Quote)
If the Pistons make the playoffs… GatorTrey(Quote)

i spoke of dumars in the post…how did i miss this…i need an editor
i was pointing out how bad the bulls were at being a gm…and despite my mention of dumars…i didnt include him in the stats at the bottom…i will edit this oversite mikeychx(Quote)
