The Morning After: October 17, 2009

By sparty

101609Yankees28CWThe birds aren’t chirping, the sun is not bright, the sky is definitely not blue, and it is cold enough to keep you inside all day long in NJ.  This day couldn’t be more beautiful.

Enough about CC’s struggles in the postseason.  CC Sabathia has now pitched 14.2 innings this postseason, allowed 1 walk, and only 1 run over those innings and struck out 15.  Yeah, I would say the Yankees are getting what they paid for.  The Yankees capitalized on Angels fielding mistakes and errors, while CC mowed down Angels hitters to take a 1-0 lead in the ALCS.  I have to say, John Lackey did pitch pretty well considering.  He will look good in the Yanks rotation next year.

The Phillies were on the cusp of a 2-0 series lead against he Dodgers, but their bullpen and infield failed them in the bottom of the 8th.  After Pedro Martinez stymied LA for 7 shut out innings, a host of Philly relievers could not close the door in the 8th. They allowed 2 runs to score on 3 singles, a throwings error by Chase Utley, and a bases loaded walk issued by rookie JA Happ.   The series is now tied at 1-1 as it shifts back to the right coast this weekend.

Why would the Cardinals be surprised that the best hitter in the game isn’t ready to just sign a contract with them?  Albert Pujols next contract would be ridiculous if he allows himself to hit the FA market. Then again, Pujols is going to see Dr. James Andrews.

The Red Sox have been plugging in someone to play short ever since they traded away Nomar.  I just can’t help but think Alex Gonzalez won’t be there next year.  I know they got their eye on a superstar they already traded away.

Shocking news of the day: Javon Walker open to being traded off the Raiders roster.  WOW!

Wade Phillips won’t be fired until the season is over according to team owner, Jerry Jones.  I would hate it if the Giants owners talked as much as Jerry did.  Take a look around the league. The owners who have their names in the spotlight more than their players and coaches all have teams that aren’t getting the job done.  The Cowboys, Redskins, and of course the Raiders.  Jerry didn’t run his mouth as much when the Cowboys were winning.  Hmmmm.  Don’t let him in on that.

The Browns are continuing to want to get rid of any productive player on their roster.  It is great to trade for draft picks, if you weren’t as inept as the Browns are at assessing talent.

Patrios may be switching back to a 3-4 defense.  Ya know, the alignment that helped them win 3 Super Bowls.

Shame that Stafford is struggling to get back on the field with his injury.  He was really starting to make big strides prior to getting hurt.  Kid is going to be good.  But resting might be okay right now, since Megatron is out right now.

Question for you: Would you rather have starting cornerback on your team that’s name rarely gets called or one that gets a lot of INTs?  I would like the former.  That means he is so good, they won’t throw the ball to his side of the field.  See: Webster, Corey.

LANE KIFFIN NEWS!!!!  It is probably more of a slight to Urban Meyer than it is a compliment to Nick Saban.

If Gruden takes a job, I sure hope it isn’t at Louisville.

Rick Leach can eat a big fat d!ck.  I don’t like Michigan, but I respect Lloyd Carr.  No reason to ever attack him, he was always class.  This is why I call horseshit when Michigan alum deny Lloyd Carr being pushed into retirement.

We knock the Big East a lot, but you know what they say, stats don’t lie.  Should we take it easy on them?

A homer’s preview of the USC/ND game over at MLJ.

Sports Crackle Pop informs us that Kareem is the worst athlete contestant ever on Jeopardy.  And no, this wasn’t a SNL skit.

Anyone cared to see Paranormal Activity? I don’t.  You cannot claim to be the new Blair Witch.  That movie was spread by word of mouth because of no internet.  When you saw it the first time, you thought it could be real, until the newspapers finally told us that it wasn’t. This is no Blair Witch.

Who do you need to start in fantasy?  Souvenir City has you covered.

For a little bit more help, here is the injury report with Midwest Sports Fans.

See ya back here for college football later. We have some good ones today.  I am sure you will all be watching Michigan State vs Northwestern at 12.

It’s just one game, but they were the better team by far last night. Nice job, by the way, of freezing off our candy asses. Somebody turn on the heat.  (Quote)

of course not. the yankees have won 6 World Series under the Steinbrenners. well into their ownership as well. plus, the Steinbrenners aren’t on the radio or tv each week either.  (Quote)
