Here at Sparty and Friends, we have reached NBA preview time (again). There will be one team per work day leading up to the season opener (Celts vs. Cavs, October 27th at 7:30pm on TNT). The teams are ordered by record starting with last place and going up through the non-playoff teams, followed by the playoff teams in order of elimination (or lack thereof in the Lakers’ case). We’ve already grabbed a Sac(To) lunch, went off to see the Wizards, turned to JP and the Clips, visited a Grizzly veteran, played some Timber sports, found our inner Warrior, rolled with the Thunder, wonder ed why there exists in today’s hip-hop NBA a team named after a older than old school piece of clothing, and now we share the regret of naming a team after a popular movie…
The Toronto Raptors invested a few dollars this off-season. They got some ugly alien guy with a name nobody can pronounce. Oh, that’s Hedo Turkoglu? Maybe in Canada they are more accepting of his kind. By “his kind” I am of course referring to either aliens or alien looking people. I’m not sure which. Anyway, why did they do this? Is “The Big Ugly Shooter” (I like to call him “The BUS”) actually going to help the team? Sure. Enough? No. So, why? The answer isn’t pretty and that’s why I put it after the jump (or because it’s long and wouldn’t fit on the front page”. Click to see ugliness for the answer…
Let’s check that mediocre group o’ dudes…
Last Year’s Record: 33-49 (2nd to last in Atlantic Division, 3rd to last in Eastern Conference, 8th to last in the NBA)
Last Year’s Prediction (GITC): 40-45 wins, 5-9 in the Eastern Conference
Coach: Jay Triano
Expected Starting Lineup: Jose Calderon, Marco Belinelli, Hedo Turkoglu, Chris Bosh, Andrea Bargnani
Expected Bench Contributors: DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson, Rasho Nesterovic
Notice anything weird about this roster? You look at a few of those guys — Calderon, Bosh, Turkoglu — and you say, “yeah, that looks pretty solid.” Then you look at the other two starters and you probably say, “Marco Belinelli?!? Didn’t we mention MBS (Marco Belinelli Syndrome) in one of these previews already? This can’t be a good thing.” You’d be right. And for the record, MBS’s end result is not being an effective NBA player. Then you’d say, “Andrea Bargnani… is he doing well enough in the NBA to start on a decent team?” Good question, you guys. The answer is a big giant “maybe” and I’m sure you hate that. Bargnani has been good but this is a little bit a little soon. And the bench? Let’s just give it an “ouch and not mention it again.
Let’s get back to the reason this team was constructed, shall we? Why did Bryan Colangelo go sign Turkoglu when the addiction was obviously not going to do enough for the team to really matter. Correct answer? To keep his job! I know what you’re going to ask now. I’ve become pretty good at this. “Didn’t he win Executive of the Year just a second ago? How can his job be on the line?” The answer is that two seasons ago they went .500, last season they really bad, and this year didn’t look any better. Turkoglu absolutely doesn’t help the team down the road, but he might help them win enough games to help Colangelo justify his job. Hard to imagine, but when you get a job as an NBA GM, you really don’t want to give it up. He’d probably get another job, but there’s no guarantee. The BUS will help just a bit.
Video of the Day time! This is Jose Calderon highlight reel. He pass ball good. Very good.
Best Comment From Last Season’s Preview of This Team time! This one goes to Sparty because it reminded me of a finny time around these parts…
NOT A COMMENT!!!
new post.
First of all, we commented that there was a new post. Second of all, I realized that Sparty was making sure that it was not a comment because he had lost a bet to CMFost at the time and was banned from commenting… on his own website. Ah, the old days.
I’m not quite sure where to go, but a low playoff spot seems possible so…
Prediction: 37-42 wins, 7-11 in the Eastern Conference

Hedo is so going to kick your ass after he reads this. john(Quote)
enjoy amir johnson, toronto. potential my ass. sparty(Quote)
So I am not sure, is Hedo Turkoglu ugly? cbh49er(Quote)
Turkoglou makes them a Finals caliber team if you listen to what some people say…. GatorTrey(Quote)
Hedo’s Mom? cbh49er(Quote)
O.k…first off, DeRozan is gonna start, not Bellini (and as a 2nd guy he’s pretty good). You say DeRozan, Amir and Rasho are the main bench guys…again, No. first guys off the bench are Jarret Jack (one of the better back-ups in the L), Antoine Wright (solid), and Reggie Evans (the toughness they need). Bellini is next, then Rasho as a dependable filler, then Amir or P.O.B.
This is a very solid bench. The starters are also good, although much depends on Bargani…if he is the same guy as the second half of last year…they are #4 in the East easy! Turk is not old, and relies on brains not athletecism anyway. Bosh is gonna play more “D”, and Calderon is finally healthy again. Rollie(Quote)
I love how there is so much incorrect information here and that is used to analyze the Raptors situation/record.
As Rollie said, Bellineli is not likely to start…. and is fighting for minutes with Wright (same guy that started for the Dallas Mavericks last year). Jack is the 6th man (same guy who backed up Brandon Roy and took the starting job from TJ ford). Amir is expected to be about 5th on the depth chart for big men. The raps may not have all-stars coming off the bench, but they currently have one of the deepest teams in the league.
Oh and can you post a link to where anyone in MLSE said BCs job is in danger, that he needs to create a good team immediately? Oh what…. you don’t have one? That was pure speculation? Nice work! Swirsky’s Soldiers(Quote)
This may well be the most uninformed speculation I’ve even seen. Not only did you provide unfounded, biased opinion, there are no facts to back anything up… YOU’RE A JOKE! mattrick(Quote)
I like how he bashes Colangelo for a bad “addiction” in Turkoglu …
Well, your belog stinks too!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH Simon(Quote)
As a Magic fan I agree Turk is an addiction. My wife absolutly loved him and almost bought his jersey…I warned her he would be gone. Now she sits in the corner and shivers each night.
Oh ya and you guys sucked last year.
I see nothing wrong with this preview. GatorTrey(Quote)
Ok the Raptors sucked last year … doesn’t that sort of prove my point?
Are you guys seriously saying that a border line all star and key player for the Eastern Conference Champions couldn’t help one of the worst teams in the East last year?
And in response to my friend the Magic fan … dude, wasn’t that Vince Carter getting called out for laziness on day 2 of training camp!?!?!?!
OK just cause I’m feeling sort of masochistic today … does anyone here really thing that VC is better FOR THE MAGIC than Turk? Simon(Quote)
No he’ll help, I think the Raptors are a 5-7 seed in the East and win 40+ games.
As for Turk…He was one of my favorite players and I wanted him to stick around, but be careful with what you see. The guy’s career started when he got other weapons around him…Including Dwight’s game coming to and Rashard’s addition. Turk is very streaky and never a guy the Magic could depend on to score consistently. One thing he is though? CLUTCH. The number of big shots he hit will be missed.
Carter, his laziness was nothing more than coach-speak. He’s from the area, in the back half of his career and commanded much less of a financial burden to the Magic. Plus he gives the Magic what we didn’t have, a scorer who can create.
Straight up is VC better for the Magic than Turk…I’ll wait and see. But I think the Magic have added enough pieces around with the money they save from not resigning Turk to a 5 year deal in brandon Bass, Matt Barnes, and Jason Williams.
Even though it’s meaningless doo-doo preseason, I’m amped to see what the new lineup looks like on the court on Wednesday and I’ll be there! GatorTrey(Quote)
Colangelo is quite possibly the #1 GM in the NBA as far as Job security goes…. If you think otherwise you should read up on his history as well as the lack of pressure Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment has put on it’s teams to win. Its a Pension Fund owned corporation – they only care about making money (which is why the Raps are somewhat doomed to mediocrity as a franchise). I think they will likely be in a dogfight with Miami and Atlanta for the rights to be swept in the second round by one of the dominant 3 teams in the East. Edgar(Quote)
