Okay, in a strange twist of events, I am throwing my support behind ESPN. I know that is not common among bloggers -especially me- but in this case I am encouraging them to not listen to the critics. Emails, phone calls, and angry Jewish Yankee fans might be found outside the walls of Jericho Bristol. If you see them starting to walk around the perimeter silently, then you might have a problem. But since that is unlikely to happen, stay strong and do not go back on your decision. What decision? This one.
The New York Jets already caved to fan pressure and solicited the NFL to have their game time changed for Rosh Hashanah, because their Jewish football fans put the Jets first, and their faith second. I have already covered this, and the league and the Jets caved to the demands of a group of people. The New York Giants made sure that they didn’t have the home game the week of Yom Kippur, so they didn’t have to deal with another fallout with their Jewish fan base, remember this?
We all know that ESPN generally doesn’t give a rats-ass public opinion. They know they are the one and only sports station that people generally watch. Even us that generally cannot stand them at times, continue to be viewers. However, they are going to receive massive amounts of pressure to relinquish this game to the Jewish fans in New York. See, they want their cake and eat it too. Well, they actually can’t eat cake on Yom Kippur, but you get what I mean. Bottom line, this is the Day of Atonement for Jews, their focus should be on things much bigger than baseball, according to their religion. I 100% positive there are more Jewish people who can careless about the Yankee game than those who do. I am sure there are Jewish Yankees fans that don’t care to miss the game either. So don’t see this as a rebuke of all those involved in that religion, just those that will be sure to complain.
I don’t care what time the game is at as a Yankee fan. The Giants are on the road that week, so if the game remained at 1pm, I would just switch back and forth. There is a good chance the game will have little meaning, because the Yanks will have the division and best record wrapped up. If they remain on at 8, cool. I can then fall asleep around the 6th inning since it will already be 11pm by that point. I am just sick and tired of sports changing their schedule around to meet the demand of “special interest groups.” ESPN wants their ratings, and they will get their ratings. Just stand strong Bristol. Don’t worry about anyone blowing a horn outside of your buildings.
UPDATE: Aaaaaand, they caved. Game moved back to 1pm.

Too bad you you’re not going to have a World Series to go with your division and best record. Yankees suck.

And by anyone, he means Dan Shanoff. knightwhosaysni(Quote)
Kind of ambivalent here. As an atheist, I don’t see what all the fuss is about but if I was a season ticket holder and the time was changed to conflict with any other obligation, I would be pissed off. If a large percentage of fans have a conflict, then there is a legitimate issue.
Just have a problem with the statement :
I can’t think of a single other instance of a sports schedule being moved around because of a special interest group. Games were cancelled after Sept. 11th, 2001 but I think we all think that was reasonable. The Earthquake in the Bay area delayed the World Series. I know of a local bike race that was cancelled because several business owners complained it would hurt business. But seriously, what other situations are you referring to? cycledan(Quote)
I hate it when my jai alai intramural league game gets cancelled because it conflicts with flag day. Totally ruins my week. knightwhosaysni(Quote)
my point was that it really isn’t being changed for all, just a specific group of people. a group of Catholics petition the Tigers to change their game on Good Friday this past April. I think the Tigers didn’t do it.
but what you mentioned also were catastrophic events. no comparison. sparty(Quote)
I was sort of being tongue in cheek when I was referring to the catastrophic events. I never heard of the request on Good Friday.
Basically what this comes down to is business. Teams may lose ratings on TV with day games but long term, they want kids to attend games as well as adults since they are the future fans. Same way they don’t want to lose fans of a certain faith because they are paying for tickets that they can’t use. Next year, they may have more trouble selling those seats.
Most fans attending the game would rather have the game at 1PM on a Sunday since they have school and work the next day. Actually I know many people who hate the fact that networks can move the start time of games. I know of a Jet season ticket holder who was furious when they made a game into a Sunday night game since he had to sell the tickets.
Can’t please everyone but sports teams are better off trying not to piss off their fans. cycledan(Quote)
do you really believe they would stop being fans? sparty(Quote)
I think it is a tough call, as a team. As a season ticket holder, I don’t get upset when games move time slots because I never plan around a specific game (except when the Cubs are in town). But, I would be pissed if I planned an out of town trip to NY and bought an individual game ticket and the event moved. Teams don’t worry about the individual ticket holder nearly as much as the Season ticket guys, so the people they will piss off are probably not really who they care about any way. natsfan74(Quote)
No. But they may be a lot less likely to buy tickets to Sunday games next year when the games can be moved to inconvenient times. cycledan(Quote)
i understand, but that isn’t at issue here. sparty(Quote)
doubtful. sparty(Quote)

if that doesn’t do the trick, we need to send somebody to go knowck on GITC’s door. mizerle06(Quote)
Fans of teams like the Sawx, Yankee$, Dodgers, Phillies, and yes, even the Cardinals, will buy their tickets either way. They know that weekend(and the occasional weeknight) home games could be moved for TV, and if they are diligent, they will look at the schedule and figure out which games are more likely to be subjected to this. Well; they caved. Whoda thunk it? Bruce(Quote)
