NFL Division Previews: AFC West

Submitted by mikeychx on August 12, 2009 – 3:00 pm41 Comments

post_afc_westAhhh…the AFC West Worst. So much drama…such little good football. Tom cable in his first “real year” means three out of the four coaches are new – and Norv Turner isn’t one of them?  This division should be will be the worst in the NFL and will have people clamoring for playoff seeding by conference…regardless of whether or not a team wins their division. Most likely the AFC West will cause another 10 win team to miss the playoffs from the AFC North, or the AFC East….good times.

Side Note 1: You know what the best part about living in a football free Los Angeles is? We always get the game of the week.

Side Note 2: You know what the worst part about living in a football free Los Angeles? We always get to watch the Raiders or the Chargers games…

San Diego Chargers – In a very real way, the Chargers should go 6-0 in this division…They will need it. The AFC West gets the NFC East and the AFC North this year. So this is a very real possibility of another 8-8 team like the Chargers winning the division again. If last year is any indication of the bad luck magnet that Norv Turner is, well anything is possible. They managed to go 4-8 and then win four straight to squeak out the division (thanks Broncos for losing three straight and getting your “irreplaceable” coach replaced. Shawne Merriman not in on Defense for the year contributed heavily to what should have been a cakewalk for the Bolts. Darren Sproles emergence should spell Ladanian Tomlinson long enough to keep him healthy for the year and make a difference once the Playoff start. Prediction 9-7 (Win Division)

Denver Broncos – The Broncos collapsed like the Mets in the regular season (or the Cubs in the postseason) last year. To me this means a philosophical change or a player away from turning it around. Nope – lets blow the whole damn thing up. Yeah they have a serviceable QB in Kyle Orton…but he is no Jay Cutler. And Mike Shanahan’s running philosophy that made millionaires out of fringe running backs…well that’s gone too. Again, the schedule for the AFC West is going to play a huge factor. The AFC North and the NFC West East (h/t to copy editor rekcalsa) could sweep, but Ill throw them a bone and say they win at least two games against but get swept by the Chargers. It all adds up to 8-8 and an early vacation.

Kansas City Chiefs – Will Matt Cassel prove to be a fluke…a beneficiary of QB’ing the New England Patriots. The Patriots who probably see another ring had Tom Brady been healthy? I really believe this. I see Kansas City doing nothing this season other than rebuilding and looking at new schemes, new philosophies, and new coaches. Todd Haley is coming over from the NFC Champion Cardinals to take over…. and they brought in a bunch of “names” that are on the downsides of their careers. The reality is, the AFC West is so weak that after going 2-14 last year, a 6-10 mark will be seen as a huge improvement, and will garner some buzz for Haley, and a pass for Cassel. It won’t amount to more than third best though.

Oakland Raiders – Commitment to Excellence? I don’t even know if I really want to waste to much time on the penning of this post on this team. Yeah they have Darren McFadden…but JaMarcus Russell doesn’t really have a “go to” receiver. One dimensional teams never fare well in the NFL and McFadden will be taking a beating this year. The defense has one player of note in Nnamdi Asomugha, but quick… name one other player. I keep bringing up schedule here but it has gotta be a factor – lets be honest. Oakland is f***ed. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tom Cable fired a few weeks in. They maybe have four winnable games on their schedule. 3-13 – last place again…and probably the worst record in the NFL…May as well start looking at who they draft next year right now, because Al Davis – you are on the clock.
