Oden is Greatest Center of the Decade…

By sparty

High School Oden looks like Grandpa Oden…in high school. That according to MaxPreps.com. The all high school sports site has put out its All-Decade team for high school basketball. No major arguments on the starting five with Bron, Melo, Mayo and Amare, except for Greg Oden. Dwight Howard was an absolute beast while in high school, which is why he was drafted over the “more polished” Emeka Okafor back in 2004. Oden may have received more accolades while in high school, but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that D-Ho was just a better ball player than him.

Remember, all players named to the teams are based on their success in high school, not in the pros or college.  Which is why Derrick Favors has made the 3rd team.

This of course got me thinking, who would be on the All-90s Team?

PF/C Kevin Garnett
PF: Chris Webber
SF: Felipe Lopez
SG: Kobe Bryant
PG: Stephon Marbury

That would be one hell of a game to watch. Webber and KG might have manhandled anyone inside.

I disagree with Howard being better than Oden in high school. I saw them both play in person those years and Oden was clearly better. Oden had more of an offensive game in high school than Dwight does today. On the defensive side, they were both great shot blockers but Oden was the better rebounder.

The only gripe I have with that list is the revisionist history of having Chris Paul over Telfair. That’s crazy talk. I’d have Telfair 2nd team and Brandon Jennings on the third team.  (Quote)

Howard > Oden. He physically dominated guys. who cares if the game looked better. Howard would have eaten him for lunch. because oden is fragile and old.  (Quote)

  • GatorTrey says:

GITC, I think it’s tough to say Oden was clearly better, especially since his game was the exact same as Dwights…Dunks, blocked shots and rebounds.

Dwight is a far better rebounder.

As for Oden’s offensive game..are you nuts? His game in high school was use his side to get position in the lane and dunk.

From a scout for the team formerly known as teh Seattle Supersonics.

His offense is predicated on his physical tools and his ability to impose his will on lesser opponents.

He’s very mechanical in the post, being highly predictable with his moves and not looking flexible enough to react to what defenses are throwing at him and counter with any kind of polish.

It was high school, both dominated based on their size…both are learning their ways around that. To say Oden was more polished in high school is foolish.  (Quote)

    DUDE…

Who the hell has ever accused Dwight Howard of PED use? People on message boards? He was freaking 18 years old and still growing when he got in the league.

Can we accuse Shaq of the same? He was much smaller his 1st year in the NBA than he was by 1996 when he signed with the Lakers.  (Quote)

so, we have concluded that gitc is wrong. pt to sparty, 2 pts to trey. gitc has been booed out of the arena after his steroids allegation towards d-ho, and like lebron shows no sportsmanship by refusing to shake hands.  (Quote)

and completely possible. when you have a frame the size of dwight, and then get put on a high calorie diet like he probably was, and hit the weight room as often as the magic did with him, you could easily put on 30 lbs in 6mos. especially at the age of 18, he was still in friggin puberty.  (Quote)

knightro: dan – do you have any prediction as to who will end up on the Radio Shack team?

It will be most of the Astana riders except for Contador. Most likely Levi Leipheimer, Chris Horner, Popovych, Zubeldia, etc. I don’t see any of the Americans on Garmin such as Vande Velde or Zabriskie going over. Also, I think Hincapie stays with Columbia but you never know.  (Quote)

  • rekcalsa says:

knightro: dan – do you have any prediction as to who will end up on the Radio Shack team?

I’m not cycledan, but Lance already asked Brice Feillu who wanted his brother to be able to join him. I would think Popo and Levi would tag along, maybe grab Hincapie back too.  (Quote)

I am really excited about next season. A new rivalry is born: Lance vs Alberto. Who will join the good guys (Radio Shack, or The Shack), and do battle with the evil Lord Contador?  (Quote)

  • knightro says:

dan, rek, & ft – why do you think Contador can’t carry some guys with him? In other words why do they all follow Lance? Is it economics, history, what?  (Quote)

  • spencer096 says:

    go bucks.

    that is all.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

Contador will join a team that will have a team built around him. Some of the riders may go with him. The dynamics are such at the new Radio Shack team can hire a lot of riders and doesn’t have to worry about existing riders on the team. A few guys from the former Astana team, especially a couple of the Spanish riders may follow if a team makes an offer. Astana had serious financial troubles this year where the riders didn’t get paid for about two months so I think the team folds and most go over to Radio Shack.

So that is why most will follow Lance, one team folds, another starts up so most will just move to the new team.

I also heard an interview that Feillu might go over. I am interested to see what Hincapie does.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

I honestly don’t think it is that much of a contest even if it is a rivalry. Unless Contador is busted for doping, he will be faster than Lance. He is hands down the best stage racer right now.  (Quote)

  • Fiesta Trio says:

I though Hincapie said this might be his last tour.

I agree that Contador looked very good on this Tour. But was Lance holding back, being the good teammate? I think Andy Schlek will be right there too. Next year will not be boring, that’s for sure.  (Quote)
