The Morning After: July 27, 2009

By GatorTrey

tmalogoI’m sunburnt! I had a nice weekend at the beach where the weather held up awesomely well. I didn’t make it to a TV much this weekend, but I was jonesin for football so much that I watched the 1995 Florida/Florida State replay Saturday night. Florida won…in case you were wondering.

Yesterday I went to a production of “My First Time” that my brother directed and put together. Pretty funny monologue based play put together by stories pulled from the MyFirstTime.com website. If you have a local production and don’t mind cursing and sexual descriptions check it out. Pretty funny time.

I didn’t get to see it, but Ricky Henderson and Jim Rice entered the Hall of Fame yesterday. Congrats.

Finally, Hammerin Hank speaks out about steroids and what the players of the era. Should be interesting with McGwire on the ballot next summer.

The Jays rejected a trade for Halladay that the Phillies offered…they only included three prospects the Blue Jays are thinking more like five prospects. A deal will happen, it is more about when it will.

Look out world! Thanks to everyone else in the division falling apart and the Cubs putting together a small win streak, Chicago’s finest have taken sole possession of first place in the NL Central. They’ll likely hold onto it for a few days and relinquish it back to the Cards/Astros/Brewers.

Now every American who has ever bitched about soccer being low scoring can just site back to what happened in the Meadowlands yesterday. It happens, I think US Soccer will be fine.

Lance finishes third. Not bad for a guy who hasn’t competed in the event in 4 years. He says he’s coming back next year to do it again too.

Tim Tebow gets insured for $2 Million, Colt McCoy? $3-5 Million.

Jimmie Johnson Ricky Henderson and Jim Rice entered the Hall of Fame yesterday. Congrats.

Steve Spurrier recasts his forgottenvote for Tim Tebow. Did he cost Tebow money? Tim Tebow gets insured for $2 Million, Colt McCoy? $3-5 Million.

Usain Bolt is overshadowed…at least according to Rockabye.

Jimmie Johnson won the Brickyard 400 becoming the first repeat winner since the race started about 15 years ago. This race has slowly taken its seat as the second best race the sport offers. It is such a natural marraige and great race.

LANE KIFFIN NEWS!!!

“I’ve not loved everything I’ve had to do, but it needed to be done, in my opinion, to be able to put us where we are today.”

Sounds like a bad weekend in Vegas, Lane.

Lance did great job this year in a supporting role. He’ll have a new team where he can directly attack Contador, but I don’t think he’ll win next year. Contador and Schleck are too strong and much younger.  (Quote)

but when tebow dies, on his deathbed, he will receive total consciousness. So he’s got that goin’ for him, which is nice.  (Quote)

I didn’t see Jimmie’s HOF speech. Was it any good?  (Quote)

The insurance is provided by the NCAA to protect future earnings potential. I would have put Colt McCoy at more than double Teblow’s potential. Tebow is a very good college QB, but what position will he play in the NFL?  (Quote)

Tebow is a very good college QB,

that is quite an understatement. though I agree that it is very likely he doesn’t play that position in the pros.  (Quote)

I think you’re right Fiesta, but Lance is going to work real hard over this next year to really give Contador a fight. He managed to get 3rd this year while on the same team and unable to attack Contador, but when he’s able to attack and with Bruyneel on his side, it’ll get real interesting.  (Quote)

Although I disagree with Sparty, Tebow will be a NFL QB…and there is zero doubt in my mind that Jacksonville will be that spot.  (Quote)

Hmm. Contador is just unbeatable right now. He beat Lance soundly in all the stages that matter, the time trials and mountain top finishes. I am sure Andy Schleck who finished 2nd this year will work on his time trialing and come back stronger. He is only 24 I believe so he really hasn’t even hit his prime yet.

So while I would like to see it, I can’t see Armstrong winning it next year.  (Quote)

Yanks are back to 2.5 games in front now. Just need to keep that momentum going now until they play the Red Sox again. If you think that the 0-8 mark against Boston tarnishes this season so far for me, then you are right.  (Quote)

  • Fiesta Trio says:

I am definitely excited about next year’s Tour, and I will start to follow the “minor” Tours as well.

The polka dot King of the Mountain jersey is an absolute sham. Contador, Armstrong and the Schleck brothers blew by Pellizotti on Mount Ventoux. They are the real kings.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

Fiesta, those “minor” tours are pretty exciting races as well. Actually the one day “classics” are what many serious cycling fans follow more than the tours. Those classics tend to be very long races of about 150 miles in a day going over narrow cobble stoned roads covered in dust and mud. Just a battle of attrition where there are only a few riders left in the front bunch at the end of the day.

Also the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta de Espana are the other Grand Tours. Both are similar in miles over three weeks like the Tour of France. The difference is that there is a much greater presence of the home country in those tours.

As for the King of the Mountains, it very rarely goes to the true best mountain climber. The best climbers are typically worried about their overall place in the race. Riders typically target the mountain prizes by going out in front of the group on mountain stages and snatching up the points on the first few mountains before being caught. Winning the polka dot jersey doesn’t mean you are the best climber, just were most consistent over the tops of all the mountains.

Cavendish was obviously the best sprinter winning 6 stages this year. However since Thor Hushovd can climb and get sprint points on the other side of mid sized climbs, he snatched more points. Still, if Cavendish hadn’t been relegated in one stage, he wouldn’t have lost 13 points and may have won the green sprinters jersey.  (Quote)

Contador is pretty damn good, but I think Armstrong might make it a bit closer next year. I was surprised to see him riding so well. Both Schlecks will be right up there next year as well. And what if Levi hadn’t broken his wrist?  (Quote)

I’ll probably start following the other races more now that I have a TiVo. And I was rooting for Cavendish over Hushovd, but I like them both…I think Hushovd won it when he attacked over the mountains…I don’t think Cavendish was close enough that the 13 pts would’ve put him over.  (Quote)

Pasted the green jersey results below. Hushovd only 10 points over Cavendish. He got 1 more when Cavendish was DQ’ed and Cavendish lost 13 so that is a total of 14 points. Then again, if Hushovd knew it was that close, other things may have been different.

Points classification # Rider Name (Country) Team Result
1 Thor Hushovd (Nor) Cervelo Test Team 280 pts
2 Mark Cavendish (GBr) Team Columbia – HTC 270
3 Gerald Ciolek (Ger) Team Milram 172
4 Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil (Spa) Caisse d’Epargne 145
5 Tyler Farrar (USA) Garmin – Slipstream 136  (Quote)

The real heroes are the domestiques. It’s amazing how much effort they put forth to reduce the effort of their leaders. It will be interesting to see who signs up to be on Team Radio Shack, and who will be working for Contador.  (Quote)

from all the interviews with lance, you kinda got the feeling that he knows he can beat the guy. he was being very gracious, and being a very good teammate.  (Quote)

I must’ve been looking at a previous day’s results when I glanced at them…good catch. Well, then Hushovd’s day on the attack basically is what gave him the win. Cavendish is still the king of the sprinters in my book.  (Quote)

Cancellara destroyed himself a lot just trying to set the pace for the Schlecks…he did one helluva job. And Popo and Rast pulled some long turns at the front too for Astana.

I heard Lance wants Brice Feillu on his team and he’ll only come if his brother Roman is invited too. I’m sure Levi will go with Lance and probably Popo.  (Quote)

Lance has been very careful with what he’s said during his interviews, but he did seem to think that it’ll be a totally different race next year. He definitely couldn’t hang with Contador this year, but he’ll have his legs under him next year.  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

I don’t think Lance was being gracious. He is pretty straightforward and Contador was simply superior – and Lance knows it.

As far as the domestiques in cycling go, they are pretty much like the offensive linemen in football. When there is a great offensive line, the RBs, QBs and WRs get all the attention but it is the OL that helped make it happen. That is why the prize money is evenly distributed to all the riders. Actually there is an extra share or two that is divided among all the support staff such as the mechanics who travel with the team.  (Quote)

I don’t know about that. just his entire tone, and mannerisms in interviews seemed odd. even said he knows that he picked up on weaknesses of contador. i think rek is right that lance will race better next year. guy hasn’t even been back in competition for an entire year yet.  (Quote)
