_44825063_watsonThe 1st round of  The Open Championship is almost complete, and a former champion currently is on top of the leaderboard.  No, it isn’t Tiger Woods.  He played what could be described as a poor round of golf, finishing +1.  Five-time Open Champion, Tom Watson is currently ahead of everyone at Turnberry, after shooting an opening round of -5. *Update*  He is 1 stroke back of the leader after the completion of the 1st round.

Before Michael Strahan, it was Watson that was known in the sports world for having a recognizable gap-tooth look.  However, Watson truly made his mark as the number 1 golfer in the world in the late 70s and early 80s.  Though he won the Master’s twice, and the US Open once, across the pond is where Watson truly excelled; winning 5 Open Championships.

Will Watson be able to keep this up for another 3 rounds?  Might be tough, as he is 59 years young.   Either way, he has brought the initial intrigue to this weeks Major Championship.

Here is your current leaderboard.  I am taking the field.

Tom Watson winning this thing would be the greatest moment in golf history. He’s 13 years older than when Nicklaus won the Masters in 86.

Tom Watson is an awesome guy. I had the pleaure of meeting him when I worked the US Senior Open in 2005. Always treated me like a regular person and not the guy asking if he wanted anything to drink.

the real downside of it being overseas. what i like about the other majors is being able to catch the end of the 1st two rounds when i get home.

Tiger Woods won’t win it. He plays bad on par 70 courses and he doesn’t mount big comebacks. The 3 British opens he’s won he’s been either 1st or 2nd after day 1.
