Maybe LeBron is the Problem

Submitted by sparty on July 7, 2009 – 9:30 am29 Comments

51533695Plenty of blame has been placed on Danny Ferry that last few years for not putting more talent around LeBron James.  He has tried to find role players via trades, or gave out big deals to such players as Larry Hughes just so that he didn’t go empty handed in free agency.  Why haven’t big name free agents signed with them?  Plenty of times you see big name veterans take a little bit less to sign with a contender.  The Cavs have LeBron friggin’ James and have been unable to make any waves.  Wouldn’t you want to play with the best and have a chance to win a title? Wouldn’t you?  Well, not if the guy is going to bail next year.

Forget what LeBron James is saying in Cleveland. Just because he has stated that he will be staying in a Cavs uniform doesn’t mean he is not taking his show to Madison Ave.  Until his name his signature is on a contract extension, nobody is going to believe him.  What James has said is the equivalent of a college coach saying that he is committed to coaching the team he is currently with.

Players do not believe LeBron James. From what we have heard;  Trevor Ariza, Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion, and Ron Artest have all turned away from the Cavs because of LeBron possibly bailing at seasons end.  Players don’t want to be stuck in Cleveland and have that franchise drop right back to where it was prior to the 2003-2004 season.   That is exactly what will happen if LeBron leaves.  Nobody believes anyone in sports when they say certain things.  The only thing we believe is when a “John Hancock” is on a contract.  The athletes are no different.  A rare case took place in Los Angeles.  Baron Davis last year got word from Elton Brand that he would be playing with the Clippers. How did that workout?  Sure, they like the big payday, but they also want security for their future. No NBA player likes to be playing on a team that is done playing ball in April.

The only way the Cavs are going to land a true impact free agent, is by having their cornerstone commit his future on paper to Cleveland.  Maybe that will happen after this season, but don’t hold your breath in Cleveland.

I don’t believe that. if LeBron was signed thru 2018, a couple players would have signed big deals, and there would have been no need to trade for Shaq.

Makes perfect sense. Shaq has ONE year guarenteed there to coincide with LeBron, it’s gonna be tough. With Rasheed and KG back Boston is the team to beat in the East, and I’d even argue they’ll still have problems with Orlando.

I think you’re seeing this league-wide. Toronto was only able to nab Turkoglu because of the amount of money they were able to provide. Miami’s roster looks exactly the same as it did prior to the end of the season, and that’s even a “warmer” city. No one is jumping to play in Atlanta with Joe Johnson possibly leaving and the Josh Smith trade rumors. Phoenix isn’t exactly building around Amare – they’re even rumored to be moving him. I agree that it doesn’t help Cleveland, but it definitely isn’t limited to this area…

it is definitely more league-wide, but it isn’t something that players have talked about until now in the case of the Cavs and LeBron. i don’t recall hearing or reading similar comments from players about whether D-Wade will still be there.

if the Pistons move Rip, they could have a very attractive team to lure a FA next year. that is banking on them being successful with this new makeup.

The turnover in 2010 will be crazy, if LeBron jumps to NY with a Chris Bosh, you’ve got the best team in the East there.

Given the age of their now 4 stars, this is likely Boston’s last year and they know it.

It will all depend on how Ainge manages the expiring contracts of Allen, Pierce and KG over the next three years.
