The Week That Was Baseball: June 23, 2009

Submitted by GatorTrey on June 23, 2009 – 1:00 pm22 Comments

TWTWMLB - Ball in gloveMovement! You want movement? Well you’re not getting much this week. The Rockies continue to go on an early dream run. St Louis grabbed the Central for this week. The Dodgers continue to run away with the West. What else do you want?

Summer runs slow at this point because even where there are some great races (and there is no shortage) no really cares because there is so much ball left. All you know is that you don’t want it to be your team that hits the imfamous 6 game losing streak…Right Phillies fans?

Oh the humanity…The most disturbing news of the week. Moneyball the movie, starring the dreamboat that is Brad Pitt, has been put on hold. Now everyone’s reaction wa; “How do you make that a movie?” Easy folks, it was going to be a movie about the day to day ins and outs of professional baseball much like Any Given Sunday was for awkward male genitalia exposing locker rooms. Trust me this one probably wasn’t going to be by the book.

Theo Epstein: Where’s the spot on this DL declaration for a case of buyer’s remorse? Bad record…high ERA…Boston fans freaking out…but no clear proof of an injury…ya.

Is Joe Girardi A-rod’s slump buster? It certainly  had nothing to do with the Miami nightlife, right?

Things that are always given #4726…The Mets will lose someone vital and be better for it. ya, Beltran was carrying a lot of the offensive load, but I have a feeling this might wake ‘em up. At least, they better hope it does.

Now I might have brought it up on here before, but who knows. My favorite urban legend ever ever ever ever is Wade Boggs taking down 64 beers on a cross country flight. Well Lowell Spinners fans how many did he put down June 20th? (No you gotta click the link on this one)

Somewhere, Carlton Fisk is polishing his shotgun, drinking a 5th of bourbon and crying…No not really…but he did lose a record this past week.

Hail to the headmaster…I think many will always think of what Donald Fehr did as “bad” for the game, but if you’re a current Major League Player you best be sending him off well. The guy completely changed the way owners treated the players (and this was going back decades) with a collusion suit he successfully won. He managed to oust the commissioner of baseball, keep the game salary capless in an era where leagues were pushing it, and finally got the players to the point of earning 100% what some of the best players were making 10 years ago…

Trey: Overrated: Kobayoshi hammering down 64 hot dogs Underrated: Wade Boggs hammering down 64 beers.

Big D is currently making his way through Iowa, so we don’t get his commentary this week, but he’ll be back just as soon as you know it.

I don’t think he’s got buyer’s remorse yet, but if he starts off next year as bad as did this year…

I saw the Jefferson to the Spurs headline on ESPN and my initial thought was “Wow, how the hell did they get Big Al from the T-Wolves?”

Sports talk radio and the papers would have gone insane up here had that happened.

However, Bowen has a nonguaranteed contract for next season, so the Bucks could release him, further saving about $4 million next season and giving them a better chance of retaining Sessions and Villanueva.

Please cut Bowen, I hate that prick. It’s just an under the table thing, where he’ll go right back to the Spurts anyway.
