Well, after weeks of hype and controversy, we found out why CBS aired the Tim and Pam Tebow commercial sponsored by Focus on the Family, and not a gay dating site commercial. Both commercials …

Now What?

dogdaysLots and lots of baseball, that’s what.

The NBA Finals and NHL Stanley Cup Finals all concluded these last 3 days, and now we are left with very little to get us to kickoff in September.   We started this blog last July, and we remember how quiet it was.  The NBA Draft had already went by, and there wasn’t much to talk about for the entire month.  Luckily we had Michael Phelps, the Redeem Team and Alicia Sacramone show up to carry us until football really got going.

I am hoping we can drag some NBA Draft previews out of our NBA guy, but if he doesn’t get cracking soon, we will be sure to grab JP Manahan to handle the rock for us.

Besides that, all we have to look forward to is the MLB trade deadline which usually doesn’t mean too much.  So sit back and relax, the Dog Days are here.

I’m not afraid to admit when I am wrong, the NHL did very well on Friday night in the ratings. I got to catch the last 2 minutes of the game, awesome finish.

I only caught the last 5 minutes, but those seemed like the best part of the entire game…what a finish indeed.

Game 7 was great. Best ratings for an NHL game in something like 10 years. Heard the date on the radio driving in but forgot the exact game.

Kobe is an amazing athlete. No denying that. He is up there in the pantheon.

I am looking forward to the dog days of summer. Something just relaxing about being able to just keep a baseball game on in the background almost every night.

Actually, there is quite a bit going on internationally. The Combined English, Irish, Wales and Scottish all-star rugby team, the Lions, are touring in South Africa now. They played some regional teams so far. However the big matches are against the South African national team, the Springboks. Should be some great action next weekend. Unfortunately I don’t know if it is covered on TV here at all.

Of course the Tour de France starts in July. Should be interesting. Armstrong is making his comeback after a 3 year retirement. He just had a kid with his girlfriend so he needed an excuse to get out of the house. His teammate, Alberto Contador, who won in 2007 is the big favorite for the race so it is unlikely Armstrong will win. Interesting to see if he can put aside his ego and accept that he is the 2nd best rider on the team.

I don’t think he’ll have a problem pitching in to help his teammates win. I like Contador and will root for him and Leipheimer.

Mind you, it was worse last year, at least in the interim between the US Open and the Olympics.

2008 was an AWESOME sports year. We have yet to fully appreciate that.

I’d assume you’ll be able to find feeds online. Also in South Africa: Confederations Cup. May not be great in the early rounds, but the chances of a Spain/Italy match are quite good.

Apparently Egypt and Brazil are having a hell of a game right now.

Once the NCAA men’s lacrosse championships end on Memorial Day, the only thing I care about is béisbol until after the World Series, so this is my time of year, sportswise. Oh sure, I’ll watch a football game here and there, but my interest is purely casual until after the end of the Fall Classic. And yes, I really do follow college lacrosse.

Lots of people care about college lacrosse. I went to Cornell undergrad and Syracuse for my Masters so I had my two schools going at it again this year which was a repeat of the championship game in 1988 when I graduated.

My grandfather, an uncle and one of my cousins(all on my father’s side) went to Cornell. And my uncle was Comptroller at CU for several years, so with UVA out of the picture, I was rooting for the Big Red.
