Joey Porter’s Mouth Never Stops

Submitted by sparty on June 9, 2009 – 9:30 am16 Comments

joey-porterJoey Porter runs his mouth more than any player in the National Football League. He cannot help himself at times. His latest barb is in reference to alleged talk about how the AFC East goes through New England:

“I don’t understand how you can put somebody in front of us,” Porter said Friday morning. “We won the championship. We were AFC East champions. I just don’t think it’s supposed to happen like that. You’ve got to beat somebody to be the champs. We had to beat somebody to be the champs.”

At first glance it doesn’t seem like too much is wrong with what was said, but let’s take a closer look.

I take issue with his first comment; who was put in front of the Dolphins? I watch and read a lot of sports and I have yet to see any predictions from any publication or media source on the upcoming NFL season. Seriously, I am not sure what Joey has been following, but this shouldn’t even be an issue. Also, I find it funny about him beating his chest over being the AFC East Champs. Relax, man. Divisional Championship looks nice as a background on the team website, but that’s about it.

“I feel that we’ve put ourselves in position to be a championship team,” said Porter, who led the AFC with 17.5 sacks last year. “The doubting is over now.

The doubting is certainly not over. The Dolphins used a gimmicky offense to put points on the board. Nobody is doubting that the defense was a fluke last season, but question marks still remain on the offensive side of the ball. Chad Pennington, while efficient, was protected by the wildcat offense, that caught many teams off-guard last season. Once there was enough game tape on them, the Ravens used it to blow them up and force them into about 66 turnovers in the playoff game. The Chad Pennington revival comes to a close this year.

Let’s give Joey Porter a reality check. The New England Patriots lost their best player, let me rephrase that, they lost the best QB in the entire league moments into week 1 last season. They won games with a QB that wasn’t even good enough to play in college. They missed out on the playoffs with 11 wins all because of a tiebreaker. Sure, you won the AFC East, but only because the Patriots were missing their biggest bullet. When you hold a healthy Patriots offense to under 30 points and beat them, then run your mouth about how good the Dolphins are and how nobody should doubt you. You beating them without Brady was the equivalent of Tommy “the Machine” Gunn winning the title belt in Rocky V (bad movie, but perfect example). The Dolphins are a paper champ.

I’m still amazed Porter wasn’t one of the first guys cut by Parcells when he took over the Dolphins.

Looking at that picture, I’d say he already shot himself in the buttocks.

I like Porter’s approach. You are champs until you are not. No matter how you got there.

Agreed. Until Game 6, the Boston Celtics are still the NBA Champions.

What a load of BS. Cassel was just put down big time and treated like a punk in this artical. There was very little letdown between Cassel and Brady. You act as if Matt is a third stream QB but he sure was a top draw on the trade market.

You put the wildcat down as a fluke but it takes more talent at the skill positions to run it than does a base offense. I will admit that the Dolphins need more run blocking out of the base for the reason of good clock managment but to totally discount the accomplishments of the wildcat is just short sighted.

The Pats may turn out to be better than the Fins this year but until they beat the Fins the later is still the AFC East Champs.

    Cassel + Vrabel = 2nd round pick

    Cutler + 5th rd pick = Orton + two 1st rd picks + 3rd rd pick

How did the Wildcat do at home in the playoffs against a quality defense?
