Sparty Needs to Know: What is the “Personal Issue?”

By sparty

david-ortizFinally, we have uncovered the reason behind David Ortiz not hitting the ball well – a personal issue.  That is what David Ortiz is claiming.  David,  you were the Red Sox 2nd most feared hitter batting in front of Manny Ramirez between 2003-2007.  Fans from all over have accused you of possibly being someone who has used steroids, even though Boston blogs refuse to believe that players on Red Sox have used them since drug testing was introduced in 2003.  Yeah, because Manny just started using stuff.

Is Ortiz distracted?  Maybe.  But he needs to come clean and be more specific as to what the issue is.  Am I saying this because he owes it to us as writers, bloggers, and fans? No. But because he gave a half-assed answer as to why he is playing so poorly.  Look, if it is something grave like a sick family member, no one is going to bother him about it.  The questions are going to stop as to how it is impacting his play.  Beat writers have a way of not being sensitive to athletes, but in this case he will be left alone if he just is honest.  Now the questions are going to follow him as to what is going on.

Bottom line, David, you messed up by offering up a personal issue as to why you have been doing soooooo bad. Let’s not kid ourselves, it has been absolutely atrocious, and it just isn’t the first month and half this season.  Injuries were the excuse for your bad stretch last year and in the playoffs, but suddenly you claim perfect physical health and now it is something mental keeping you from the game?  Athletes deal with personal issues all the time.  Alex Rodriguez has a lot of distractions in his personal life, but somehow has managed to hit 4 HRs in less than 2 weeks since coming off the DL.  So come on man, tell us what it is so we can all move forward together.

Damn. “Personal Issue” sounds a lot like “I don’t want anyone digging any deeper into this.” Man that would suck. Most Boston fans can delude themselves into “Well, nothing proves Manny used in ‘04 or ‘07″, but if Ortiz came back positive… crap.

Of course, “personal issue” could just be “personally, I’m pissed that JD Drew makes more than I do.”  (Quote)

ah sparty – we can always count on you to use a Yankee as the benchmark for all that is good and proper. Papi should clearly be more like A-Rod. We all should.

In case you didn’t notice…the Celts and Bruins both got their asses handed to them in game 7’s. And that is a personal issue for all Bostonians.

I don’t feel like he has to explain his issue to the fans, but it would be nice if he did, just to make the 24/7 “What’s wrong with Ortiz?” talk go away. As long as he is telling Francona and Theo what’s going on, I’m ok with that. …and they must have a pretty good idea, if they are kicking the tires on possible trades already.  (Quote)

Big D, the sooner you accept that Ortiz and Ramirez were on the juice in 2004 and 2007, the easier it will be for you. It’s not like they’re going to take away those world series any more than they took away New England or Denver’s cheating Super Bowls.  (Quote)

knightro- give me an example of a player who would be better suited as a benchmark for this situation.  (Quote)

I’m not worried about them taking away the titles. Personally, I believe 40% of players – hitters and pitchers – were on something from about 1990-2005, so this wouldn’t even bother me. It’s just part of the era.

I just don’t like the idea of “my team” being a part of it. Even if it’s perfectly clear that they were, in one way or another. I mean, the Red Sox did employ Roger Clemens & Jose Canseco at one time or another during this era. And if there are better poster boys for ‘roid use than Nomar & ‘roid rage than Carl Everett, I’ve never seen them.  (Quote)

Not that I would want Ortiz to get suspended, but getting him out of the lineup for 50 games wouldn’t exactly hurt the Red Sox at this point.  (Quote)
