After thinking about it, this is a strategic move by Rivers to get the rest of the team focused on the first round series. Right now, his team and everyone else is looking for when Garnett will appear from the trainers room.
I believe Garnett will play if the Celtics get further in the playoffs, but Rivers doesn’t want any gray area so he is letting his team know that they are without Garnett and so they better focus and win with the team they got.
