When Tiger sits down in front of the microphone Friday morning, don’t expect the moment to be like it was 14 years ago when a sound bite became part of his first commercial as a professional golfer. This will be no “Hello, World” type moment…though, it could have been. No, not a big flashy smile, here comes golf’s savior, but an opportunity for him to show the world that he was truly sorry for what he has done. Well, at least appear sorry for what he has done. Let me state that I don’t care if he is sorry or not, but whether or not you want to admit it or not, the morality police are everywhere and larger than you think. But, there are so many people that want to see Tiger act this way. The companies that are a part of the Tiger Woods brand want him to appear contrite. It shouldn’t matter because he is just a golfer, but this is the world we live in. People want their A-list celebs to be an open book to them, and to not be drug addicts, swindlers, and adulterers. But if they do stumble, they want to see them be honest in their search for redemption.
I am not someone who has ever worked in PR, nor have I ever concoted a damage control strategy. But, even as a layman, I know that the manner Tiger is being handled is pretty poor. He and his people really should have taken a page out of Alex Rodriguez’s book from a year ago. About this time last year, A-Rod had come under fire following the release of Selena Roberts’ book that exposed him as a steroid user. At first, Alex and his PR team bungled it trying to make Roberts look crazy and obsessed while conceding to only a tiny admission. Fans did not buy what A-Rod was selling, and eventually he held a press conference in Tampa in which he gave a statement and answered questions from the media. Now, A-Rod’s statement was something that was read, most likely what Tiger will do this weekend. The statement in itself is not what really mattered to people. It was not written by Alex, nor will Tiger write his own. What bailed Alex out of months and months of scrutiny from the media, and from a lot of fans, was the Q&A with the press. Alex allowed himself to be exposed, and for the most part, he handled it well. He was already understood as socially awkward, so it is hard to truly judge how forthcoming he was with answers, but there were times where genuine remorse seemed to be present. Whether or not that is what he was expressing, only Alex really knows, but it seemed good enough for the press, and again, a lot of fans.
Team Tiger has hand-picked members of the media to be present for the press conference tomorrow. Tiger will read/recite a statement apologizing for his past indiscretions and likely detail some of his plans in moving forward in his personal and professional life. Hey man, that’s great. But people want to see that other side of him, the real Tiger. Ya know, that side that is cool and calculated in everything that he does. That guy who allegedly banged every waitress he wanted from the Perkins to Ruth’s Chris. People now know of his existence and want to hear from that Tiger. They want him to answer questions from the media. They want to seem him adjust himself and squirm in his seat when he hears a question that makes him a little uneasy. They don’t care if he answers questions perfectly or the way they hope he would, they just want to hear it come from Tiger and not a speech writer. Hell, get the questions beforehand like the President of the United States does at his press conferences. Just don’t have something written and robotic, because it comes across as written and robotic. Yeah, the hardcore golf fans of the world don’t give a hoot, but those aren’t the ones that increase the marketshare of golf products or boost the ratings of golf tournaments. They are a dependable staple; this isn’t for them. This is supposed to be for all those others who prior to Thanksgiving 2009, only watched golf because of you, Tiger. Not only are you losing them as fans, but so if golf. Just answer some questions. You have avoided them for months, and that is not how the game is played. Ugh, and would it hurt you to allow a few media members that you are not comfortable with? Barry may not allow the Fox News journalist to ask him a question, but at least he allows him a credential. By hand-picking everyone, that is making you come off extremely elitist (which you are, I get that), petty, and disingenuous. Ya need to man up. Don’t believe talking heads and columnists that say they just want to see you hit the golf ball again *cough* Michael Wilbon *cough*. They are full of it. They just want to stay in your good graces in hopes of landing the first sit-down interview. This is the media, they care about it all.
Tiger has an advantage over Alex Rodriguez. Tiger didn’t cheat in his sport, he cheated on his wife. Yes, with several different women, but still. We aren’t really shocked by it. We are more shocked by the sensationalistic detail of the affairs he has carried on, and it just seems extraordinarily strange in hindsight how cool, calm, and calculated Tiger was on the golf course, but foolish and sloppy he was with his personal life. Most of the best at their sport have been busted for cheating and nobody cares. Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Muhammad Ali, Mickey Mantle, hell, even A-Rod, and nobody really cared. For heavens sake, we know of multiple Presidents that got their rocks off with women that weren’t the First Lady. The only people that cared about Bubba’s indiscretions were the Republican-controlled Congress and the way-right wing voters. The rest of this country didn’t care. But Tiger is coming off completely pompous about the cheating, and that is turning people off. Tomorrow should have been the time to get some people off his back, but now it is just leading more people to pile on.

Strong post. patphish(Quote)
I don’t really have a problem with what he’s doing tomorrow, because I think it’s just part one of the process. After tomorrow is done with, I think he’ll move on to Oprah and/or 60 Minutes where he takes controlled questions. I don’t think you will ever see him sit in front of the media masses and answer questions like A-Rod did. john(Quote)
Doesn’t he have to pretournaments and post rounds/ events? Johnny(Quote)
he and his handlers have always strictly controlled thses times. no reason they wouldn’t insist on even greater control now. mizerle06(Quote)
something to the effect of a briefing to the media before Tiger takes the mic that sounds like “Tiger is going to be here for exactly xx minutes and only taking y number of questions…don’t ask about topic z or Tiger walks.” mizerle06(Quote)
Yeah, but he will only take golf related questions. The first non-golf question that someone asks, he’ll just walk out. john(Quote)
that’s fine and dandy. but that doesn’t change the fact that this press conference is a joke and makes people continue to look negatively on him. sparty(Quote)
this is all about public perception, and Tiger is failing at it. sparty(Quote)
Tiger will be fine. Win one tourny everyone forgets everything. Book it. GatorTrey(Quote)
I kind of wish he didn’t care at all about public perception and would just step up to that podium and say, “Yes I’ve had a lot of sex of the years with women who are not my wife. And you know something this only matters to me and my wife. It is not any of your business and if you don’t like it well tough shit because that’s all you’re getting. You can write what you want and portray me how you wish. I’m going to go play golf and I’m going to win because I’m Tiger Woods the best damned golfer who has ever lived.” Johnny(Quote)
i would be fine with that. but that wouldn’t be good for his pocketbook. sparty(Quote)
Patience. He can’t win everyone back in one press conference. A handful of controlled interviews over the coming year and a few big tourney wins and he’ll be as close as he can to having things back to normal. john(Quote)
you wanna bet? sparty(Quote)
Shouldn’t we see the press conference before condemning it?
And I am one of those people that only cares about him hitting a golf ball. Once he is in contention in a major I will watch like I always have. cbh49er(Quote)
i don’t need patience, i don;t care. but good for him. he can cost his endorsers money in the meantime. there are people who won’t buy his product because they think he is slime and doesn’t care. that’s the reality. sparty(Quote)
I would prefer Tiger becoming a heel a la Ravishing Rick Ruud. Just be the bad boy. knightwhosaysni(Quote)
false. unbook that. mizerle06(Quote)
he’s reading a statement and only handpicked media members are there. that is condemnable. sparty(Quote)
you do realize you just posted that comment in a sports blog thread, right? just checking. mizerle06(Quote)
Dude already has more money that he can spend in this lifetime though Johnny(Quote)
elin could decide to take him to the cleaners at any moment. sparty(Quote)
and when you are rich, you never have enough. of course, same can be said when you are poor…. sparty(Quote)
The endorsements will come back. If he can win a couple majors this year, they will be back sooner than later. john(Quote)
And he’d still have more money than he could spend in a lifetime Johnny(Quote)
I just think the majority of his fanbase could care less about his cheating ways. GatorTrey(Quote)
therein lies the problem…a difference in the population being observed between you and the post. his fanbase is without question gonna return after things have cooled off and he wins a couple of tourneys. it’s the general perception that’s fractured. you think all those housewives and self-respecting ladies out there that were casual fans on saturdays and sundays are gonna tune in for Tiger now?
I say they won’t. mizerle06(Quote)
then why the presser? don’t say because the pga says so, because then why would the pga care? why go to sex rehab? why wait months to deal with this? i don’t buy it was to just save his marriage. sparty(Quote)
you guys realize that cabbage, knightro and cycledan are very few and far between of older gents that visit blog? the guys that don’t liked woods until a few months ago. the baby boomers. they are still the ones that drive golf sales and ratings. sparty(Quote)
let’s hope Tiger’s statement is longer than 61 seconds. otherwise, he’s Lane Kiffin. mizerle06(Quote)
so, what, patphish is irrelevant now!? he’s old too and don’t you forget it.
/obvious lame joke mizerle06(Quote)
See Watson, Tom HawkEye19(Quote)
I don’t buy this argument. People will buy his shit cause it’s good stuff. People always talk a good game on stuff like this, but never follow through. patphish(Quote)
leaked statement? sparty(Quote)
nike golf sucks. people bought it because of his name. sparty(Quote)
Call me a gent and I’ll KYTFO. patphish(Quote)
such as? sparty(Quote)
They buy it because they think it’ll make them great like Tiger. Guess what? He’s still great. patphish(Quote)
Watson dumped on Woods, more because of how he was acting on the golf course, not off of it. john(Quote)
guess what, tiger endorsed products are down. sparty(Quote)
Such as, when has a product actually been hurt when it’s endorser fucked up? Did McDonald’s and Nike suffer when Kobe ass raped a teenager? patphish(Quote)
Cliffs notes version for those of us who have SBB blocked at work? HawkEye19(Quote)
McDonalds dropped Kobe and Nike put him on the shelf for a while. So, both basicale dissociated themselved from them and neither suffered as a result of his idiocy. what’s your point, gent? mizerle06(Quote)
There’s the Specer-signal HawkEye19(Quote)
they dropped kobe for few years. but mcd’s and nike isn’t linked with kobe. you didn’t think of kobe when you went to get a big mac. nike basketball shoes is still jordan. nike golf is tiger woods. they didn’t even have a line that would sell until he was around. sparty(Quote)
I hope you get mugged tonight. patphish(Quote)
hawkeye- nobody knows for sure if it is actually the copy but here it is:
“Directly to the point there is no one to blame but me for the mess I have put my wife and family through. I accept total and complete responsibility. My wife and I have been trying to work things out but sadly things have not worked out.
Again all the blame is upon me. We have decided to live apart with me having mutually agreed upon times when I can be with our children. I know that the world wants all the details of what transpired in our marriage but that is between my wife and I and will remain that way. I have to get on my life and that means playing golf again.
I have contacted The Masters and have informed them that my plan is to resume The Masters and they have said that they would welcome me with open arms. For that I am most grateful for I deserve nothing. Finally I want to thank all my fans around the world for standing by me when I let you down horribly. I failed all of you about as badly as a person can.
I apologize to everyone of you. I promise all of you that you will see a new Tiger Woods, a better Tiger Woods and I will not let you down. Now I’d like , by the grace of God and with His help, to get back to what I do best and that is playing golf. See you all at The Masters. God Bless you all. ”
i don’t by that at all. the third person shit doesn’t make sense. sparty(Quote)
if that’s the actual transcript, I’d be so incredibly pissed if I was Tiger. everyone with access would be fired until I found out who leaked it. mizerle06(Quote)
No way in hell that’s his statement. john(Quote)
Like what? No one buying Gilette razors? Stop drinking Gatorade? Maybe some of his personal golf shit is down, but then again its basically been snowing for 60 straight days, and Florida is having its worst golf season on record do to the cold. I really don’t believe people are going to take the moral high ground and stop buying his shit long term. If you broke 80 for the first time using a Nike ball, you will use them for LIFE. patphish(Quote)
so Tebow is Tiger’s speech writer? mizerle06(Quote)
For someone who is so much about his private life staying that way, this is a very odd statement. I’m with you, I don’t buy it. HawkEye19(Quote)
tigers golf shit is down because tiger fucked a ton of waitresses. that’s the reason. as long as their is no snow on the ground, people golf. my brother goes out in 40 degree weather in november. sparty(Quote)
I buy the Masters being apart of it as Tiger’s people did say that it was a time sensitive announcement and it makes sense that could be Masters related Johnny(Quote)
That said I don’t really buy that it’s really the statement as Tiger is absurdly private and holds grudges like no other. If one of his people leaked this that person won’t be one of his people anymore. Johnny(Quote)
Gillette has the Gillette Young Guns to fall back on. oh, and Roger Federer and Jetes too.
Gatorade basically shelved Tiger like Nike did to Kobe. mizerle06(Quote)
ben the orthopedic surgeon? golfing in 40-ish weather!? dude’s a trooper. mizerle06(Quote)
here’s a tweet from Darren Rovell:
NPD Group: Only 5% of consumers plan to cut back or eliminate any purchases of products Tiger endorses. Johnny(Quote)
Gillette sucks. I use Schick. HawkEye19(Quote)
that’s now. people already cut back. rovell has already said that his product sales are down. he rationalizes that it is due to the economy, but golfers aren’t being impacted by the economy. sparty(Quote)
He doesn’t need to do a Q and A because he won’t get any questions that are relevant. His personal life is not relevant whether the morality police believe so or not. If they want to ask how this ordeal has affected his golf game, that’s a fair question, but you know he won’t get that question at first. He’ll get the ones about how this had affected his family and that is none of our business. HuskerDawg(Quote)
I’d like him to tell us to fuck off and that it’s none of our business, but as Sparty said, the pocket book would take a hit and Tiger is all about the pocketbook. HuskerDawg(Quote)
you missed the point, husker. tiger can’t appear to make a half measure. he has to make himself appear vulnerable and contrite for what he did. simply reading a statement doesn’t do that. the media will keep hounding him, and fans that don’t read blogs and were his fans (old dudes and house wives) won’t care for him anymore unless he does so. sparty(Quote)
ok nevermind, you did get it. sparty(Quote)
It’s his life and his business and I don’t care. cabbage(Quote)
i know. neither do I. but just look at the NY tabloids this morning. people do. sparty(Quote)
True. People do care, which is so sad. The Post and their ilk are in the business of selling papers/mags and Tiger news does that. HuskerDawg(Quote)
He would instantly become the most awesome sports figure in the history of sports. Please do this Tiger.
dwaltlhi(Quote)
Tiger Woods has a problem. All we ask is that he is working on it. We’ll go with what ever he says. Who watches a golf tournament without Tiger? “I have a problem, I’m working on it, golf is my life, and I’m coming back.” All we need to hear. Fans will be happy, sponsors will be happy, GOLF will be OVER JOYED! CoreneliusButterfield.com corneliusbutterfield(Quote)
Then why bother to have a press conference? if it is no one’s business, or he doesn’t owe it to anybody, why do this? i am not saying you are wrong, but Tiger cares about his image with everyone. and when i say everyone, i literally mean everyone. that is what this is about. some suggest that the pga is making him do this. bullshit. you think they would tell tiger he can’t play unless he does this? ha! this is all a PR move on Tigers part, and that is why he should be willing to take questions. sparty(Quote)
All this over an spoiled brat who hits a golf ball. Sad. If he was Tiger Woods, the world’s best janitor, would we be so interested. He went after these “ladies” because he likely didn’t get anything before he became known. Making up for last time I guess and having all that loot didn’t hurt either. Mark(Quote)
His “press conference” was a bit of a joke. Nice touch hugging his mom afterward. Seemed a bit forced. RFS(Quote)
