The Morning After: 2.10.2010

By GatorTrey

LAW NERDS! UNITE!!! A key US court ruling denies a motion to dismiss and sends O’Bannon vs. NCAA into further action. What dat mean? Basically the judge thinks Mr. O’Bannon (and several other athletes…class action) has a case, or at least enough of an argument to keep this lawsuit a movin’.

If ruled in the plaintiffs favor, it could put the NCAA at a crossroads. Any time they sell something containing footage of Laettner’s shot or Flutie’s pass, they’re basically making all the money. The same goes for video games. By comparison, NFL or NBA footage gives a chunk to the player association for using their name or image.

While doubtful that it will have a massive effect on current student athletes, it could pressure the college video game industry to have to refrain from using likenesses…after all, it is what started this suit anyway. Ultimately we could get an idea of how much money the NCAA is making of these video games and DVDs. (I promise…it will be astonishing)

That being said, It might not matter outside of football, because it looks like EA Sports is dumping their college basketball game anyway.

Trey Speaks! Few people know that Orlando is home to Tiburon, the developer for Madden, NCAA, and Tiger Woods EA Sports games. Many years ago I knew someone who worked there and he told me that what made the Madden/NCAA franchise work, was the fact that they used the same developers on the games. In basketball there were two separate companies developing the NBA and NCAA version. Go figure. My guess is this paired with the lawsuit was the undoing.

Whereas the college football game, while behind Madden, is very very popular and makes millions for the NCAA and their conferences. No doubt that getting to play Tim Tebow, etc. helps drive those sales. The loss of that likeness will hurt the developers and the NCAA stay tuned.

Some kid hacked into Wrigley Field’s security video…pretty uneventful, but fun. I guess.

InTheBleachers opens up draft coverage by discussing the upcomming quarterback class and their flaws. Pretty good read (TEBOW) given the fact (TEBOW) that there is really (TEBOW) no surefire NFL quarterback (TEBOW)in this year’s class.

More thoughts on the Berman to the NFL Network/NFL Network Suiside story that is developing.

The Browns want a Philadelphia QB…at least that’s the rumor. And they’ll take any of them. Except Vick…And get this…McNabb is also saying Vick deserves to start…LOVE TRIANGLE!!!!!!!!!!! I see this ending well.

Josh Q. Public believes that the torch is now in Drew Brees hands…Eh…eh…No.

The Celtics and Bobcats in talks for a deal that would send D.J. Augustin to Boston for Big Baby. CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER – DEADLINE DEAL THAT THE CELTS NEED TO GET THE PROMISED LAND!!

Meanwhile, in Washington, no one has any idea on what the hell to do with the Wizards. Well the fans do…not attend.

And with a potential NBA lockout looming, the big guns are most likely to get hurt from it. I don’t see Stern letting this happen again, especially with retirement around the corner.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have officially removed all water fountains from Quicken Loans Arena in order to deter the spread of the dreaded H1N1!!! Sounds like a bunch of bullshit management made up to get people to spend $4 on a bottled water.

Like vid’ya games? Like baseball? 7th Inning Stache reviews MLB 2k10. They didn’t seem to like last year’s version too much.

SPACE FILLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frisco, Texas wants to steal the Div-IAA (FCS) football championship from the metropolis from Chattanooga and throw it in their soccer stadium. Not a bad idea…but the game has been in Chattanooga since 1997.

The folks at Barking Carnival bring you March to March, a nice college basketball website.

And finally, for Valentine’s Day, I ‘ve refrained from advice, because it really was bad advice. So I ask…How much is Corey Hart worth?
