The Morning After: 1052 Days Left.

By GatorTrey

It’s National Signing Day! And Florida MIGHT be pulling in the best class in the country! I know, like last year, most you Yanks are now officially confused and are calling your parents for advice. I love all the hype over 18 year old kids whose future stands uncertain, but that’s part of the fun. While you have failures from the top level recruits, most your big guys work out, Vince Young, Reggie Bush, Adrian Peterson, and Percy Harvin were once top rated recruits out of high school.

Three Schools to Watch For:
1) USF
2) Auburn
3) UCLA

We’ll have more on National Signing Day later, but stand by and watch the surprises as they roll in throughout the day. Or talk about the Super Bowl hype…again…what do I care.

It looks like those Commie Indianans are expecting kids to be at school next Monday, win or lose. Which is the exact opposite of the NOLA public school system.

“Pay him…pay dat man histh money”…Chris Johnson wants a raise…Before his knees go to hell. Please.

Rex Ryan fined fitty Gs for acting JUST LIKE A JET FAN! Confused. There are 5 things you need to be, in order to be a “TRUE” Jets fan:
1) Inebriated
2) Loud
3) Sloppy
4) Ill-Tempered
5) Gassy

Wanna see Beantown crap themselves in unison? Rumors have surfaced that Boston’s Paul Pierce might have a broken foot.

The Pistons are selling!

I am so over the Brett Favre media circus, but this is kinda cool.

Ashton Kutcher talks Tebow? Then, Miss Florida makes her move

Clay Travis says drop SEC division play in football. No.

After failing to make the NCAA’s for two straight years (although ROBBED last year), Billy Donovan is sitting on the bubble again, and thinks a 96 team tournament is a great idea. You will see several coaches embrace the idea, as making the tournament usually provides a nice lil’ bonus.

Trey Opines:I go back and forth on the 96 team tourney. I think it will suck some of the life out of the great event, and while everyone says the little guy will benefit, I say nay nay. You’ll see MORE big conference bubble teams in.

Areosmith’s Steven Tyler will threaten a lawsuit if they try and tour without him.

Check out this blurb from the Police section of a newspaper:

I’ve actually had a few TMI’s like this before in police reports I’ve received. Way too dirty to throw on here, but if you really wanna hear the good one, email me: GatorTrey@spartyandfriends.com

Virginia Tech and Boise State announced their Labor Day game at Fed Ex Field. Hokie fans around the world grumble.

Spring training is just around the corner, so here’s a Yankee blog I read and liked.

Michigan/Michigan State hockey talk froma Michigan student. While someone around here might discourage cross breeding of blogs, I support it.

I was once an unknown intern at an intercollegiate athletic department. I found this to be rather cool, as this kid blogs about his experience doing the same.

For those who don’t follow recruiting before Signing Day, Auburn is going to be a shocker. Probably #3 behind Florida and Texas. The answer to why is two fold; Gus Mahlzon’s offense (which a lot of high schools run) and the ability to play right away.

when is someone finally gonna take full advantage of Labor Day and have some type of promotion for pregnant women that are almost full-term? I’m thinking something like: “Preggers get in free…and if you deliver at the stadium/ballpark, lifetime season tickets for the kid.”

Maybe a little, but I think it’s more the ability to start right away this year. Bama’s last two top classes make it hard to sell that.

cabbage – I think it’s rare that a large portion of players from a recruiting class make an immediate impact on the field. if Auburn gets such a solid class this year in just Chizik’s second season, that spells bad news for Bammers. I’m not saying Auburn takes over Bammer, just that they become legitimately competitive again. and, in a rivalry like that, it’s anybody’s game come day of.

Florida’s ability to pick up even more recruits after the whole will Urban be there deal, probably has a lot to do with so many of their players on defense declaring for the draft.

    (Quote)

Yes, most recruiting experts thought the addition of Percy Harvin made UF a National Championship contender because it gave Chris Leak a “Reggie Bush” type player.

We started the year ranked high despite losing three the year before.

While it certainly doesn’t have the “immediate” impact of a college basketball player, it’s because it’s 22 players rather than 11.

There are always a handfull of freshmen that alter a team’s chances of winning. Harvin was definitly one. Terrelle Pryor was considered another, though he didn’t work that way.

college basketball recruiting classes are 4 or 5 times smaller because the active rosters are 4 or 5 times smaller than those for college football. OF COURSE one player in cfb may not have such an immediate and profound impact. on the field he is 1 of 22 whereas the cbb player is 1 of 5.

that being said, the overall class as well as the individual star power is what’s so important today. it’s not that hard to understand. it’s just a bigger deal in some parts of the country. there’s a massive collective depression when the last cfb game is played in January in the regions that are incredibly passionate about cfb. Signing Day is a slight reprieve from that and offers hope as it kicks off the spring practice period, which begats the summer hype, and ultimately leads us to fall kickoff.

Ohio State 5 star recruits include:
Mike D’Andrea (The heralded LB in the class with Bobby Carpenter and James Laurianitis)and a couple of running backs you have never heard of (oh yeah, and this guy named Maurice Clarett who was ok as a freshman, but no idea where he is now).

if the argument is about whether or not this year’s recruiting class is aiding in winning a title next year, then of course it’s not. it’s universally understood that it’s 2 to 3 seasons before a class develpos into it’s full potential.

natsfan – there’s two possible reasons why your 3-star vs. 5-star list exists: 1)Tressel chose poorly when recruiting those top guys, B) Tressel sucks at taking advantage of talent (Pryor’s not been as much of a stud as he was touted…), and III) Ohio State sux donkey ballz.
