The Weekly Spartacast – Episode 12: It has a name…

By Big D

THIS IS SPARTACAST!In our final Spartacast of 2009, Sparty welcomes Big D, Trey and yes even Miz into the weekly conversation.  While we opined on all things Tiger, college football and NFL, a new phenomenon was named.  You see, every week we know Trey is going to lead us slightly off course.  It’s guaranteed.  We don’t know when it’s going to happen, or what kind of story it’s going to involve, we only know that it will both be hilarious and require ten minutes to recover from.

Well, this week it finally gets a name.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you… The Trey Tangent!

01:10 – Yep, more Tiger news.  This week’s conversation – when does he come back?
05:15 – Hooray for text messages!  Let’s count…
08:15 – Miz joins the dark side – he’s become a golfer.  By the way, we’re up to six text messages at this point.
09:35 – Sparty expands on Miz’ theories of the difference between Kobe’s “transgressions” and Tiger’s “transgressions” before we move into the next scandal on the horizon – Tiger and PEDs?
13:15 – Funny, we’re already talking about Tiger in the past tense.  He WAS the public face of companies… he WAS the torch bearer for black athletes… he WAS a clean image guy.  That didn’t take long.
15:45 – Yeesh.  I feel dirty.  I just defended A-Rod and said that he was the perfect example of how to handle a scandal…
17:00 – The part of Trey’s keyboard in tonight’s performance will be played by Sparty’s keyboard…
18:00 – Miz brings up a pretty good point – if Tiger never returns to golf, or if PGA sponsors start pulling their money out of the tour, how long before the PGA tour collapses?
21:45 – GatoryTrey makes his presence felt in the form of a ten minute tangent about James Cameron movies.  Awesome.  Lucky for us, the tangent moves on to Internet rumors about Jamie Lee Curtis, arcs to a tale about the inappropriate Toy Story jokes, and finally concludes with Al Bundy.  I was a part of this conversation, I’ve listened to it during edits, and I still don’t know how we got here.
27:15 – Sparty makes an amazing segue to get us out of the weekly Trey Tangent.  I’m calling it that from now on – we all know it’s coming every week, might as well give that segment it’s own name.  We move into the talk of the Big Televen expanding to become the Big Tewelve, and how it might work.
29:15 – We address the obvious solution – Notre Dame.  Pat, your thoughts?
33:45 – Miz apparently attempts to communicate using sonar… WARNING: LOUD
34:00 – After determining that Conference Title Games could work as a de facto playoff system for college football, we talk about scheduling issues and why the football season can’t overlap the college Finals schedule.  Oh, and Miz figures out his microphone.  At least for a minute or two.
38:05 – Miz “Not to sound like a huge SEC home or anything…”  Oh no.  We’d never think that of you.  Or Trey.
45:20 – Excuse this minor giggle break… Trey had already told us beforehand which nationality or ethnic group he was going to rip on this week, and I sent him a little reminder in the on-screen chat log, which sadly doesn’t translate very well in audio.  My bad.
47:05 – Let’s try to figure out where the Big Ten championship game would be, ya know, assuming they’re able to add a twelfth team sometime in the next five years.  Meanwhile, Miz takes a shot at baseball.
49:00 – Oh yeah, we still need to figure out who’s going to be that twelfth team.  Notre Dame?  Pitt?  Mizzou?  ‘Cuse?
51:00 – While discussing the possible repercussions of a Mizzou to the Big Ten move, Trey gets a few messages on his cell phone.  Luckily, we all get to hear them come through the speakers.
53:30 – …Here is comes… Trey’s gearing up… who does he have in his crosshairs this week?  People from Syracuse!  Yes folks, it’s a DOUBLE Trey Tangent night!
56:50 – Sparty once again herds his flock back onto topic.  Kind of.  And as soon as we get back on topic, the topic changes.  Onto the NFL, and the rumors surrounding Mike Holmgren and the Cleveland Browns.
1:06:35 – As we wrap things up for the week, Miz plays us out with a rousing rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
