This of course all becomes moo*if they Yankees choke away their 3-1 advantage over Philadelphia. However, Johnny Damon had one of the most heads up base running plays in postseason history last night, it set of a chain reaction in the way Brad Lidge pitched the remaining of the inning. Damon stole 2nd base on the first pitch to Mark Teixeria, and immediately popped up to run over to a wide-open 3rd base. The Phillies had a huge shift on because of Teixeira being a pull hitter, leaving third uncovered. With Damon on 3rd, Brad Lidge was unable to use his devastating change-up, for fear that it could bounce in the dirt and get away from the catcher. Lidge tried to jam Teixeira inside, but ended up plunking him instead. Alex Rodriguez then delivered the clutch game-winng RBI double. A-Rod was able to sit on the fastball and ripped it down the line. Jorge Posada would follow with another 2 RBI base hit.
The last 5 years we have heard all about this. Where as that was a very important play, is it as good of a baseball play as Johnny Damon’s personal double steal? If the Yanks close it out, shouldn’t the importance of the two plays be at least equal? Don’t use ending the “Curse”** as a reason to put it over Damon’s.

so we all agree Damon > Roberts. sparty(Quote)
I disagree with this entire post. The Yankees would win this world series even if this didn’t happen. If Roberts doesn’t steal that base they go home Johnny(Quote)
you are assuming. you cannot say either way. sparty(Quote)
And you’re assuming that a Lidge breakdown is because a runner was on third, the guy has been giving up leads all year
You guys have the better team, you’re not winning the series because Damon took an extra base Johnny(Quote)
how many chang-ups did he throw before Damon reached 3rd in that inning? how many did he throw after? sparty(Quote)
shit, how many did he throw in the Damon at bat? sparty(Quote)
Still he’s been unreliable all freaking year, I hate both the Red Sox and Yankees but in the end the Roberts steal is more important, but what Damon did was a more savy baseball play Johnny(Quote)
Roberts >>>>>>>>>> Damon
This is not even debatable. john(Quote)
No one, save for Yankees and Phillies fans will remember this steal in a year.
Every fan, casual included remembers Roberts steal. cbh49er(Quote)
Except me I guess. rekcalsa(Quote)
This is crazy. The play isn’t even heads up. Runners are taught to do that when the shift is on. It has happened 5 times in the last 2 years. Most teams have someone cover third. If it’s the 3rd baseman at 2nd then it’s the pitcher. If it’s the shortstop at 2nd then the 3rd baseman runs to cover. It was a dumb play by Lidge, not a great play by Damon.
And the Dave Roberts steal is called “The Steal” so case closed. guyinthecorner(Quote)
i love the Yankee hate. just proves why it is better. sparty(Quote)
oh, so apparently Dwight Clark’s grab is the greatest catch ever in the NFL? go fuck yourself. sparty(Quote)
Helmet Catch > The Catch

somebody’s a little cantankerous today…I blame patphish. mizerle06(Quote)
I blame the Eagles and the Golden Gophers. cbh49er(Quote)
good fucking guess. sparty(Quote)
you’re probably right. I’ll keep blaming patphish though cause he’s not here to defend himself. mizerle06(Quote)
I hate that they call it a double steal. It should have been a steal and an error on whoever the hell was supposed to cover third base. john(Quote)
You have a team about to win a World Series. I would think that would override your football teams losing meaningless games. cbh49er(Quote)
if they weren’t such embarrassing losses,… yanks haven’t’ won anything yet. sparty(Quote)
