The Real Story of Week 3 in the NFL

Matthew Stafford signals the Lions win total

We know what the real story from Week 3 is.  It is not some QB throwing the ball into the back of the end zone hoping for a miracle.  We know it isn’t about a rookie QB going 3-0 for the first time since the NFL-AFL merger. We sure as heck know that it isn’t about the team from the Mile High somehow being 3-0 when they weren’t supposed to win more than 4 games all year long.  We know it isn’t about the Super Bowl champs blowing another 2nd half lead.  We definitely know it isn’t about the return of the dog killer.  The real story of the NFL yesterday was about a team finally giving their fans something to cheer about rather than the firing of their GM.

The Detroit Lions no longer have the longest active losing streak in the NFL after defeating the the Washington Redskins 19-14.  A lot of people were picking the Lions to get into the win column this past weekend, but that’s mostly because everyone wanted to say that they picked the Lions to finally win -psst, i picked them.  Matthew Stafford looked comfortable for the first time all year, throwing for 241 yards and a TD.  Most importantly, no interceptions.  The Lions defense shut down the Redskins, or the Redskins shut themselves down.  I couldn’t really tell.  Daniel Snyder plans to sign every FA next off-season, but stick with Jim Zorn as his head coach and Jason Campbell as his QB.

From a rookie lead his team to their first victory in almost 2 years, to a veteran QB “redeeming” himself.  Brett Favre had a costly penalty late in the 4th quarter, throwing the ball past the line of scrimmage.  It looked like San Fran would upset the Vikings in the Metrodome, but Favre was given another chance to throw up a prayer.  Greg Lewis hauled it into the back of the end zone to give the Vikings the win.  You’ll hear more about this tonight on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWs and the Ocho.

That other rookie QB, Mark Sanchez, had an impressive 1st quarter touchdown run, the led the Jets on 2 more TD drives, capitalizing on 2 Titans turnovers.  Remember when I kept telling you at the start of the year that the Titans were frauds, nothing but smoke an mirrors last year?  Yeah, told ya so.

Okay, the Denver Broncos are somehow 3-0.  Well, they played the Raiders yesterday, but still.  This team has won 3 games already!  They were picked by almost everyone and their mother to finish dead last in the AFC West.  Kyle Orton replaced Jay “Douchebag” Cutler.  They ran for over 200 yards!  They forced 3 turnovers!  In the words of Vince Lombardi: “What the hell is going on out here?”

Ya think the Steelers are missing Troy Polamalu right now?  It had been 8 years since the Bengals had knocked off Pittsburgh in Cincy.  No, not in Pittsburgh, on their own homefield.  For the 2nd week in a row, the Steelers were unable to slow down the final drive of the now 2-1 Bengals, who pretty much did what they wanted in the 4th quarter. Carson Palmer connected with Andre Caldwell on a TD with only 14 ticks left on the clock.  Big Ben threw a pick 6 earlier in the game, because he actually isn’t a very good QB.

Why did Mike Vick not get to do much yesterday?  Because Kevin Kolb tore it up.  The 3rd year QB threw for 327 yards and 2 TDs and ran for another.  Mike Vick was 0-2 passing and ran for 7 yards.  What a weapon he was!  Of course, why expose him against the Kansas City Chiefs, they are bad.  SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO bad.  Giants better crush them next week.

Other Stories:

The Giants shutout the deplorable Bucs.  Brandon Jacobs doesn’t look like he cares.

The Dolphins suck.  Not much else, they just suck.

But at least they aren’t the Browns.

David Garrard gets bailed out by Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Bills get smacked at home, and TO doesn’t get the ball, once.  Hmmmmmm, that will go over well.

The Patriots begin their return to the top of the AFC East by dropping the Falcons.  Trust me, they will win it.

Jay “Douchebag” Cutler is liked in Chicago for a 2nd week in a row.
