The Weekly Spartacast – Episode #4 – “A New Hope”

By Big D

THIS IS SPARTACAST!If not for a very special introduction by our fearless leader, the Star Wars theme absolutely would have been opening and closing this edition of the Spartacast.  However, I think you’ll like what we used a little bit more, even if Sparty blatently thought that it was “going to suck” (and even said as much).

Also, we seem to have fixed almost all of the audio problems we have experienced in the first three recordings, except the problem of Trey’s loud keyboard.  still working on that one…

Anyway, the Spartacast returns for its fourth installment this week.  Sparty, Big D and GatorTrey bring you up to speed on NFL, College Football and Baseball thoughts and get us all ready for the weekend.

So go get your listen on!

/redneck’d Miz’d

Intro - “Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame!”  Sparty pays a debt… Then gives us all an unintended laugh with his ringtone.  Somewhere, PatPhish smiles…(House phone, not my cell phone)
02:38 - Are there any certainties for this NFL Season after the first two weeks?
08:00 - Clearly bored by the NFL conversation, Trey turns to sending e-mails…  Meanwhile, Big D & Sparty discuss the Seahawks chances without Matt Hasslebeck, among other NFL topics.
10:30 - Pat, this is just for you.  J-E-T-S Talk… For about 45 seconds before we move to the Patriots.
17:05 - Yes, the Jets kicked the Patriots’ collective asses last week.  Yes, Darrelle Revis is probably the best corner in football today.  Yes, Trey has again lost interest and returned to sending e-mails.
20:00 - Whoa, did somebody say COLLEGE Football?  Suddenly Trey is re-engaged!  And somewhere, PatPhish is silently brooding at Sparty’s insults of his computer skills…
21:00 - THE JORTS BOWL!!!
22:17 - I really need to meet Trey’s little sister’s best friend…
29:00 - Discussion on Eric Berry as the best defensive player in college football and his possible placement among the top picks in the NFL Draft.
34:56 - What the hell do we make of USC?  Sparty questions if Mitch Mustain is the answer at QB, while Big D questions if Mitch Mustain is eligible for AARP yet…
37:10 - Uh Oh… Sparty & Big D go at it over Mitch Mustain’s ability to be a competent quarterback.  Look out – the Vince Young comparisons are a-flyin’!!
41:00 - Remember kids, preseason and early season polls are completely useless.  Just a friendly reminder from your Spartacast crew.  Presented as evidence: Miami might just be a legitimate National Title contender right now!  Or so Sparty will try to make you believe.
44:11 - In our never ending quest to ensure that Miz is asleep by the end of every podcast (if he even listens that far along), we bring you… Baseball talk!  Best and worst acquisitions of 2009 and AL MVP discussion!  Why not NL MVP discussion?  Because there’s nothing to discuss…
46:35 - The guys discuss the collapse of the Great Tampa Bay Rays dynasty!  Matt Joyce?  Pat Burrell?  Giving up Edwin Jackson and Scott Kazmir to rely on Matt Garza and Andy Sonnanstine? Welcome back to mediocrity Rays!
55:05 - Best signings?  Trey: Ken Griffey Jr. (Miz’s AL MVP Pick I believe…) Sparty: Mark Teixeira (Of course…) D: Bobby Abreu/Brian Fuentes (/smart’d)
1:00:55 - Big D and Sparty go head to head again over the AL MVP list, mostly about Joe Mauer being left off Big D’s ballot entirely.
1:03:10 - Sparty & Trey both choose candidates for their phantom AL MVP pick that Big D doesn’t even have in his top three.
1:06:55 - Big D give us the first of his 2009 MLB Free Agency Predictions… and it might not be who you think.
1:09:05 - We wrap it up with “What to look for” over the next week – Joe Mauer’s batting average, the Cleveland Browns’ offensive playbook and USC’s comeback performance.
