The Morning After: September 24, 2009

By mizerle06

tmalogoGood morning Friends.  Hopefully you’re all having a great week.  Isn’t it crazy how many of us anticipated the college football season so much and, don’t look now, but we’re 1/4 of the way through the regular season.  Ugh.  Oh well, I don’t care since I’m so freaking wrapped up college football and the NFL that I basically forgot about the fact that college basketball and the NBA are about to be gearing up soon.  College team previews are scattered about(I’m already planning on attending some First Round games here in Jacksonville come March), and resident Sparty & Friends NBA-guy (GITC) has begun his NBA team previews as well.

Ah well, I’m not about to start lamenting the end of the cfb season yet!  We’ve got Ole Miss at South Cackalacky tonight.  Onto the links…

Quite a scare for the Washington State running back.

The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party will remain exactly where it should be…until 2016.

The MacArthur Foundation handed out its 24 genius grants recently.  I will be on this list one day.  One. Day.

Wanna learn something about the PGA’s upcoming Tour Championship?  Yeah, me neither.

Wanna learn something about the ACC’s upcoming weekend?  Yeah, me neither.

$100,000 for MJ to unretire for a day.

The GDP of babies is getting hit hard by the recession

The dating profile of the Russian dude trying to buy the Nets.

Jimmy should break some of his spiky hair off and use it as a splint for his hurt toe.

Man with penis pump terrorizes Ohio State.

No word from Bob in Norman about Sam

Mikey Vick speaks to some kids at a school.

Get the Jets fined? Check.  Get the Packers fined?  In progress.  Is Southern Miss next on Favre’s hit list?  If I were the Vikings, I would go ahead and start putting away a few Benjamins a month just in case.

Bitch fight!

Something something about Kevin Durant (some good tidbits in there).

Listen up Michigan guys, no purses in the stands this weekend.

Do players sue former teams very often?

The Hat speaks the troof!

This kid gets blown the eff up:

Agreed! These games are always my favorite because you have nearly 150,000 or more fans from both teams making their way to Jacksonville. As one Texas fan told me one yer, the Red River Rivalry is great, but it’s got nothing on this.  (Quote)

I have to disagree. This needs to alternate between Jacksonville and Atlanta. Both the University and the state lose a lot by not hosting this game every other year.  (Quote)

UGA makes more money off the game being in JAX than they do at home. Nownlocal businesses. That’s different  (Quote)

I have no doubt that the city/state could use the revenue, but I think the argument is less about economics of the venues and more about tradition the traditional location.  (Quote)

I’m a fan of the cocktail party in Jacksonville, but taking a two year break for a home and home would be fine with me.

Sparty, what are your thoughts on the New Jersey Bowl this weekend?  (Quote)

  • The Beard says:

I should have worded my points better: The city/state need the revenue. The University (more appropriately, the people that make up the university, students, alumni, fans) need to host it for the experience. Too few UGA students have experienced a game in the swamp or with an outright home advantage. I’m guessing not too many gators have been able catch a game in Athens either.  (Quote)

It would certainly be interesting and different the game is just so much fun to begin with. I do want to see a game in Athens, doesn’t have to be Florida/UGA though, there are 7 games a year or so at home.

As for Atlanta, I dunno. I went to the SEC CHampionship last December and had a blast. But I don’t think you could replicate the Outdoor cocktail party there. not much parking, indoor stadium…defeats the idea of the game. Little.  (Quote)

And yes, I was trying to be funny. The way some people hold onto to the Bear is flat out frightening.

I agree that Atlanta isn’t the best venue for a college game but it would be better for the state. Really, I wish they would go home and home. I think what influences me the most is the mystique of the college town. I don’t like/understand the reasoning behind neutral site games. College campuses are too awesome to pass up.  (Quote)

Yanks exorcised some demons and finally won a series on the road against the Angels.

Brad Lidge who was perfect last year is a real weakness for the defending champs this year. 0-2 record and blew 11 saves this year and apparently his replacements aren’t much better. Cards are by far the best in the NL in my opinion but the Dodgers may give them a run for their money. Phillies won’t repeat and don’t see the Rockies doing it either.

Red Sox vs Angels in the first round should be a great competitive series. Really no clue who is favored in that one. Yanks should beat the Tigers but the Tigers have a good 1 & 2 starter which makes it tough in a 5 game series. Fortunately bad pennant races make for really good playoff series in my opinion.  (Quote)

Braves fans lost all hope after getting swept by the Reds a couple of weeks ago and rightfully so, but now that they’ve gone 8-2 over the last ten and have 7 with the Nats coming up there’s a glimmer again.

How ridiculous would the braves getting the Wild card from 4 back with 10 to go be?  (Quote)
