Whoa!!! Remember that slow weekend of college football we all thought we were getting? Nope. Didn’t happen. In fact it was quite thrilling. You had a service academy going toe to toe with a national power, the MWC making their mark again, and hundreds of fans now believing their teams are a lot better than they are. I heart college football.
Before we start a little programming note. My usual compadre Mizerle06 is off exploring Yosemite National Park for the week so I’m joined by Senor Spartacus. (Say Hi!) Um, HI!
Man it would really blow to be an Oklahoma fan right now…Sam Bradford’s slow walk to the training room was painful and as a college football fan you have to hate seeing things like that. Luckily the Oklahoma schedule is very light the next 3 weeks, allowing the Heisman winner to likely come back for their showdown with the Canes in Miami. That being said…you can pretty much guarantee that he won’t be the first two time Heisman winner…unless he shocks the world and comes back next fall.
Sparty: Um, Archie Griffin would like a word with you.
Trey: That should be since Griffin…my apologies Archie, I’m a big fan of your comics.
And the game?…Ya, Oklahoma probably wins with a healthy Bradford, but that’s besides the point. You win with what you got, not with what you could have had. So don’t blame BYU for doing everything they should have done to win that game, including controlling the time of possession, which kept the dual all-world running backs of Oklahoma on the bench.
Sparty: Have to say, I was not impressed even when Bradford was in there. Sure, they are more likely win the game, but the loss of his two best receivers and new offensive line showed and things weren’t in sync. However, their defense played exceptional. But in the end, BYU did have things go just right.
And what now of the Sooners?…They’re not out of it, the old saying in college football. “If you’re going to lose, lose early.”
Sparty: They lost twice early. They are done.
BYU: “What about us?”…What if BYU goes undefeated? Lets not go all ECU on the Cougs just yet. They have a tough Florida State team in Provo in a few weeks…But they’d definitely have serious considerations for a BCS Championship spot.
Sparty: Still a tough road ahead. I am not ready to anoint the MWC any better than the Big East or ACC, but Utah and TCU are going to be more difficult than Free Shoes.
Meanwhile back in Southern California…I could just see Pete Carroll doing the dance of joy as Navy just ran at will on the Ohio State defense. The flex-option is a pain in the ass for anyone, but Ohio State is the type of team that SHOULD wear those guys out…not vice versa.
Sparty:I wouldn’t overreact to what happened in Columbus. Navy gives fits to teams who never play against that offense. This was OSU’s first game with a new defense as well, and they probably have watched more game film on USC than Navy. Tressel teams are known for playing down to their OOC competition. That being said, USC still rolls because they are just better.
Trey: Please…OSU looked gassed.
Thanks for inviting us…What Colorado State fans did in Boulder is exactly what you’d expect a team treated as lil’ brother to do when winning at your venue for the first time in 23 years. I’ll bet the Buff fans wish that one was still at Mile High instead of forcing the series to their place every other year.
Sparty: the Lil’ bro talk needs to stop. Mike Hart isn’t even playing anymore, is he?
And here’s to the ACC…With all the flack the Big East has gotten (don’t worry they’ve got there’s coming), the ACC absolutely crapped the bag this weekend. They fell victim to TWO FCS teams (Virginia and Duke); lost to two lower end BCS schools (Wake Forest and NC State); had two schools lose to quality BCS caliber opponents (Maryland and VT) and beat three FCS schools (North Carolina, Boston College, and Georgia Tech)…The league has a few shots to redeem themselves but this isn’t what ESPN signed up for.
Sparty: The big boys have their own networks, so what did ESPN expect?
Hold ‘er there Big East…You’re right, you went 5-1 in out of conference play this past weekend, but let’s look at this…4 wins against the FCS opponents…the FBS win? Ohio…while Rutgers was blown off the Earth by defending champ Cincinnati. We’re still holding judgment on you until we see some games against teams with a pulse…in week 3.
Sparty: Michigan fans still hoping that Greg Schiano can be their coach?
Thankfully we’ve seen 100% rebirth in kickoff classics…Atlanta was the prime example. That’s exactly what an inter-conference game should have. Hard hits. Multiple lead changes. Sold out ramped up crowds. No shame in Virginia Tech losing that one, Alabama is easily a top five team and at this point Virginia Tech has to be the class of the ACC.
Sparty:Class of the ACC is like saying “tallest midget.” But, Va Tech is great program. It is too bad they don’t get these games tacked on at the end of their schedule, when Beamerball is in complete command. But that was a great game. Hopefully, more teams will show some balls and set up similar games to start the year.
The Zook’o'meter at Illinois just got turned up a bit…you can’t lose to a completely rebuilt team by that much.
The team that impressed me (Trey) the most the opening weekend? California. It looked like Maryland dropped the soap in the shower…
Sparty: I think I would have to agree with you on that. Best is the best.
He is who we thought he was…There is a reason why Joe Cox was on the bench for the better part of a decade at Georgia.
Sparty:Domenic Natale. Now you know what Dantonio didn’t care that he bolted.
Things that annoyed me (Trey) this weekend…Kenny Chesney, Bob Davie’s gushing about the Smurf Turf, and analyzing performances against FCS schools…
Sparty:Notre Dame and Michigan match-up getting talked up immediately after their wins.
Which brings me to the point…Games against these FCS schools are good for three things…an easy dub’ya (in most cases), getting a comfortable rhythm going, and figuring out what your team needs to improve on. Just because your new quarterback threw for 250+ yards on a small Christian institution started by an UBER Conservative doesn’t mean he’ll be doing that every Saturday this fall…Put it in perspective. Those schools have 22 LESS scholarships…Millions less in revenue…and were probably eating PB&J pregame.
Sparty:You could tell Michigan State didn’t show too much offensively in the game against FCS opponent, Montana State. It was meant to get live action for their QBs. Their coaches weren’t too happy with the performance of the defense, even though they allowed only 3 pts. Ignore the analysts…especially Jesse Palmer.
Trey: Jesse Palmer is a rising star amongst analysts. I really like his work.
Speaking of analysts…Mark May’s slow transformation into Bunsen Honeydew is almost complete!

No overrated/underrated yet. Too early…Way Too Quick Verdict instead.
Michigan:
Trey: Out. I really think you’ll be seeing a dominant Michigan team in 2010, but not this year. The win over WMU was nice, but they will have their struggles this fall.
Sparty: In. They will win games against teams they should beat, but struggle against teams with more experience and deeper talent. They are much better than last year. Denard Robinson is faaaaaaaaaassst.
Notre Dame:
Trey: Out…but In next week. They’ll beat Michigan by a couple scores.
Sparty: In. They have a good offense, no doubt. If I were an Irish fan, my only concern is that Charlie opened up the passing game too much, too early. Not enough running the ball, which in the past has hurt them. I can’t rate their defense on that game. Michigan’s offense is much faster, and it should be a close game. I think it is pretty much a toss up, but maybe Michigan Stadium will swing the pendulum in the home teams favor.
California:
Trey:In. They might not go undefeated, but this Cal team might be the best thing to ever go through Berkley since Facon was invented.
Sparty: In. but they gotta beat USC.
Oklahoma State:
Trey: In…No not because they beat a SEC opponent, but their defense stepped up and stopped one of the best offensive minds in football (or maybe it’s because UGA stopped running the ball).
Sparty:Out, for now. They should have lit up Georgia, but failed to do so. Robinson did not play well, but Dez Bryant made things a lot more interesting. Forget OSU’s defense. Georgia’s wide receivers may not get the props this year because they won’t have anyone to get them the ball.
In closing…I’m not completely full of myself but back in July…
10. Richmond v. Duke – 9/5 – I’m about 99% sure this won’t be televised nationally. I’m also 99% sure none of you will even care about this game. That being said, this is your 2009 FCS over a FBS BCS team upset. Fresh off the FCS championship the Spiders have the talent to take down the Blue Devils…

Notre Dame is winning at Michigan. That stadium scares no one.
Great, great start to the year. I don’t care that it was Nevada, the offense looked amazingly crisp, exactly like it looked in Weis’ first two years.
The defense is legit as well. cbh49er(Quote)
show some fucking respect.
and sparty’s right about OSU…
and denard robinson is fast? meh…he’s quick, but lets not annoint him pat white 2.0 yet. i doubt either Mich QB makes it through the season uninjured…that OL is still dogshit and they’re midgets with little talent. spencer096(Quote)
no running game.
the defense is legit? please tell me that is just your fandom speaking. sparty(Quote)
So Notre Dame losing to Navy a few years ago wasn’t that embarrassing then right? I mean mighty Ohio State almost lost to them. cbh49er(Quote)
If you tell me you’re letting your hatred cloud your judgment. What about the defense is bad? Defense wasn’t the problem last year.
Just because the Irish don’t have a strong #1 doesn’t mean they don’t have a running game. They rushed for 178 yards in the opener on 4.3 yards a carry, that will do. cbh49er(Quote)
nevada’s pistol offense is pretty potent and kaepernick is damned good. ND beat the fuck out of em. ND is going to trounce faggy michigan. spencer096(Quote)
i don’ think it was that embarrassing for notre dame. losing to syracuse was embarrassing. navy runs that as well as nebraska did. the big difference is that nebraska had the very best blocking for them, and a 500lb weight difference. sparty(Quote)
the play calling was terrible. they should have kept pounding the ball early on. sparty(Quote)
no it was embarassing…because you lost. spencer096(Quote)
Watching USC blow you out of the Horseshoe is going to be fun. cbh49er(Quote)
BYU > Ohio State GatorTrey(Quote)
yea…maybe they can make it an annual thing, like USC’s yearly raping of ND. spencer096(Quote)
Nevada played NEB 2 years ago and absolutely shit the bed and NEB fans were thinking a Big 12 title…I’m pretty sure they finished 5-7 that year. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Or like the sweet smelling dandilion blooms of spring… GatorTrey(Quote)
pistol offense relies on a great center. theirs graduated. sparty(Quote)
The Pistol offense is quirky and I think we’re seeing a lot more college teams using some of it, but ND had none of it.
Impressed me. GatorTrey(Quote)
I’ll have more on this in my post tomorrow (tease mother fucka’s!!), but did anyone catch Virginia getting housed by William and Fucking Mary? Al Groh has got to be the worst coach in a BCS conference. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Clausen’s stat line was sick in that game. Watching Mich and ND looked competent will make this week rough in that the media will go nuts over the game. After watching OSU look like ass against Navy leads me to think my faith in the Buckeye’s is not warranted. I find it amazing that I think USC will win with a true freshman at QB, but I think I have to flip-flop on that now. HuskerDawg(Quote)
zook ftw. spencer096(Quote)
somehow, groh will salvage the season. always does. sparty(Quote)
Did anyone watch Cincy ass-hammer Rutgers on the road? Brian Kelly is about to be the coach of a very good program. I’m thinking he could be great as JoePa’s successor, though I’m sure Penn State has someone in mind for that already. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Talk about awful losses.
To me there should be NO chance for W&M to win that game…none. That is just BAD coaching. GatorTrey(Quote)
I did not see one play of that game, but what the hell happened? Missouri is a good team, and Gabbert is going to be a beast at QB for a while, but Illinois had no business getting housed like that. With Iowa, Ohio State and Illinois looking bad, it was not a good weekend for the Big 10. Lucky for them the ACC face-planted and no one is talking about that. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Totally agree. I lived in Charlottesvill for a year and they have no concept of good football. If they go 8-4 they are thrilled, yet they have so much talent in their state. Groh has got to be fired. HuskerDawg(Quote)
saved for when i get to rub shit in everyone’s grill come sunday. spencer096(Quote)
Was texting my friend about that yesterday. Kelly is an excellent coach and will be somewhere big one day. I heard he hasn’t left Cincy because of his wife’s illness. GatorTrey(Quote)
How can you say that after watching Appy State beat Michigan a few years ago? Any team can beat another team at any time. Especially a bad Division 1 school versus a very good D2 school. cbh49er(Quote)
I was also shocked at the offensive output of Bama this weekend. Too bad they couldn’t have lent some of that to UGA. VT’s defense was beat up in that game and if it were not for the kickoff return, that game would have been really ugly. Bama is the best team in the West again, and a Florida-Bama SEC title rematch would be the tits. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Dude you’re talking about a school that sways to a rip off of Auld Lang Syne after a touchdown… GatorTrey(Quote)
Except when he doesn’t. What did he salvage last year? Or in 2006? cbh49er(Quote)
Because App State has players who will be playing the league. They are a damn good team (or they were that year anyway). HuskerDawg(Quote)
I know. It was painful talking to UVA people about football…they just have incredibly low expectations. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Don’t forget the popped collars. cbh49er(Quote)
I think the Miami-Free Shoe game was easily the game of the weekend though. Harris and Ponder looked great (or was it awful defense?). I think Miami could be really good next year. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Easy…Michigan lost that game because of shit coaching. They tried to go vanilla on offense and defense and it wasn’t until the game was in question that the coaching staff started to break out the real ammo.
A terrible FBS Sun Belt school vs. a great FCS, fine…but Virginia has night and day talent over W&M (a decent FCS program).
You’re talking about 22 less schollys, probably 5-6 Million more in revenue, and facilities/support that lap them…
Shouldn’t happen. GatorTrey(Quote)
a 4 game winning streak and playing va tech tough. like trey said, low expectations. sparty(Quote)
were they both doing those stupid short kickoffs all game, or just towards the end when i watched? sae(Quote)
I think both teams looked pretty good. In 2006 after that crapfest in Miami most the people I am associated with (Nole and Cane fans amongst others) swore it was two great defenses battling…I swore it was two terrible teams playing not to lose.
Both went 7-6 that year.
Yesterday it looke different. Neother defense looked great, but they played HARD and to WIN. Both schools are going to have god years…Miami COULD (hard to guage now) could be major factor in ‘10 with the youth. GatorTrey(Quote)
They were each horrible on kick coverage so they tried that pooch shit that makes me want to scream. If I were a coach I would scour the nation for a kick who could kick the ball 5 yards deep like I would a top QB. With the kickoffs back to the 30, it is a weapon to have a kicker who can put the ball in the end zone. Also, FSU freshman Greg Reid (CB/KR) is going to be a badass. HuskerDawg(Quote)
As a Syracuse fan, I now can show my face again in a college football discussion. Sure the team is still not going to a bowl, but there is life! Despite giving away a TD to Minnesota in the first 19 seconds (snap over QB’s head on first play of game), they took a 20-14 HT lead. Unfortunately their offense shut down in the 2nd half and they lost in OT after Greg Paulus threw on INT on 3rd and 10. Still, they were competitive.
Next week against Penn State will be scary. At least they are scheduling some real OOC competition and playing better.
Then again, maybe Syracuse is the kind of team that should schedule some
IAA, sorry FCS teams. cycledan(Quote)ND has no running game? Huh? TheSportsHernia(Quote)
While ND looked like world-beaters last week, they will need to light up Michigan before I will view the Nevada game as anything more than an overmatched team getting housed. Nebraska destroyed Florida Atlantic (a bowl team from last year), but I don’t view that win as anything except a big school hammering a small one. HuskerDawg(Quote)
I don’t think anyone will be worshiping them THAT much. rekcalsa(Quote)
Really, I already booked my hotel for the Big 12 Championship.
/Sincere cbh49er(Quote)
Agreed. I was at the Swamp Saturday for what was a virtually UNFAIR matchup. When my wife notices how much bigger our guys are compared to theirs it’s bad.
We could ahve beaten them handedly with the second team…I was really hoping Meyer would get interesting and try and put 100 on the baord…instead he pulled Tebow halfway through the 2nd. GatorTrey(Quote)
I still need to see NEB go on the road and not look retarded. Last season they played T well on the road, but they just look bad (or at least they have in the past 5 years). The VT game will be huge, and then they have to play Kansas, Colorado and Missouri on the road, plus OU at home. I still see 4 losses on the schedule when you factor in TT and Baylor as well. HuskerDawg(Quote)
wait wait wait…
michigan finished 3-9 last year and nevada is probably STILL better than they are at this point…yet MICHIGAN will be a big win? get outta here. michigan’s a big school in name only…on the field, they’re smurfs. spencer096(Quote)
http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings/_/poll/1
AP Rankings. Florida State being knocked out seems silly. cbh49er(Quote)
Florida is so good this year, which makes their schedule even more upsetting. Playing the three non-conference patsies thay they are playing is embarrassing. On a side note, what did you think of Tennessee? It is so hard to gauge anything when they play such a bad team (W. Kentucky), but they lit their asses up after the first quarter. HuskerDawg(Quote)
spencers blind hate sparty(Quote)
They have talent, but it is just really young. If ND hammers Michigan in Ann Arbor, that is an impressive win. HuskerDawg(Quote)
Agree. Both those teams are top-25 (though the defenses looked pretty average). HuskerDawg(Quote)
they have talent? lollercaust.
and sparty, it’s not blind hate, it’s looking at what michigan did on offense and realizing that the minute they face a defense worth a shit, none of those openings are going to be there.
rich rod’s offense is that of a high school team that doesn’t have the talent to compete with the big boys. it’s pathetic and simple. 4 wins…tops. spencer096(Quote)
When he gets the offensive line that he likes, Michigan will light up the big 10. Now, that does not mean that OSU won’t be better (which they will be), but his offense works, but he doesn’t have the o-line yet. Also, what big boys are in the big 10? There is Ohio State and everyone else. Penn State is good in 2 year spurts and then they fade for a year or two and no other team has any sustained success. It isn’t like RR needs do jump over 4-5 really strong teams to succeed in the big 10. HuskerDawg(Quote)
BYU too high, Oklahoma too low.
/sure glad football is back. Summer sucks. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
gods…you got a point.
but michigan still sucks. and they will forever. ever and ever. spencer096(Quote)
I really hope BYU loses a game. I don’t want them to get into a title game because Bradford went down. I think OU loses to Texas and at least one more team (Miami, OK St, Neb) and ends up 9-3. Their o-line looked pretty average to me. HuskerDawg(Quote)
So will Auburn. They can all go fuck themselves. HuskerDawg(Quote)
penn state can go fuck themselves too.
FRAUDS. spencer096(Quote)
We almost had a deal for Utah to take Chaz Southern’s spot…didn’t work out.
Tennessee is going to be better than a lot of people think, and the game in two weeks will be close. Now their offense blows, but that defense will keep them right there. GatorTrey(Quote)
Geez…the AP voters dropped the Noles below Oregon!!
Oregon looked like shit. GatorTrey(Quote)
the AP sucks.
navy would smoke the living shit out of akron, yet PSU looks meh against the shittiest school in the MAC and they move above OSU?
fuck that. PSU is teh gay. spencer096(Quote)
those rankings suck balls. sparty(Quote)
thank you! sparty(Quote)
Tom Bradley will probably be the next coach and Larry Johnson Sr. will move up to defensive coordinator and then they’ll get a new D-line coach Johnny(Quote)
That bad D-1 school beat the fighting Tebows in a bowl game Johnny(Quote)
Bad break for Oklahoma…looks like Gresham out for season. GatorTrey(Quote)
I was referring to UVA and W & M with that comment. cbh49er(Quote)
Should have gone pro. cbh49er(Quote)
They were up 31-0 at the freaking half before shutting it down Johnny(Quote)
Because you were right about USC winning? Souvenir City(Quote)

It was supposed to be about Spencer “rubbing shit in everyone’s grill come Sunday” Souvenir City(Quote)
not mine, because i am ain’t guaranteeing no win for usc. sparty(Quote)
spencer’s shtick or whatever it is got old pretty fast. Makes me kinda chuckle now at least.
I was really impressed with Michigan’s offense. I really had no idea what to expect. Was just praying for a win and for the offense to look competent. Obviously I was really quite pleasantly surprised at what they did. The game really could have been 60-0 if Michigan didn’t use the second half as a practice session.
The game against Notre Dame should be interesting. ND stomped Nevada but Nevada still averaged 5.3 yards per carry. Michigan should have a pretty easy breazy day in the run game. They had a pretty decent day running the ball Saturday and Minor didn’t even play. Biggest question mark is if Michigan can contain the ND passing game. Last year, when ND lost at home to Syracuse, Greg Robinson was the coach… maybe he has some magical notes to slow them down or something. If not Michigan will have to use the run game to keep ND off the field because I don’t trust the Michigan secondary to contain them all day.
Also, lol at Terrell Pryor saying everyone is a murderer. Geoff(Quote)
I can give you the run defense isn’t a concern for OSU because of Navy’s triple option but their pass defense didn’t look that great Johnny(Quote)
schtick?
shut the fuck up. spencer096(Quote)
