The Ultimate 11: Offense

By HuskerDawg

With college football just around the corner — less than one month away! — I figured now would be a good time to piss off a lot of people by unveiling my ultimate 11. This is sort of a preseason All-American list, but it is my list, so I expect to get hammered in the comments section due to leaving off your favorite player. Yes, there are several great players at each position, but only one can make it. This means I will undoubtedly leave someone off who may deserve a spot on the list. For this I’m sorry (honestly, I’m not sorry, but I figured I’d give you a weak apology to ease your anger). The numbers next to the player indicate his stats from last season, not projections for the upcoming year. Here is you’re Ultimate 11 on offense (tomorrow we’ll have the Ultimate 11 on defense). Let the bitch-fest commence!

Colt McCoy, QB, Texas: This was easily the toughest position on either side of the ball. The three-headed monster of reigning Heisman winner Sam Bradford, 2007 Heisman Tim Tebow and McCoy left me with a very tough call. Tebow has the titles and the leadership and Bradford as the Heisman and the numbers. What does McCoy have? I think he has it all, but the BCS screwed him so people see him as less than Bradford. My initial reaction was to take Tebow, but his team has so much talent (I know, Texas and OU aren’t struggling in that regard). But I am kind of drawn to McCoy. He was unheralded coming out of high school and he is Texas. Bradford and Tebow could go down for 4 weeks and each team would most likely go 4-0, but if McCoy goes down Texas goes from a national title contender to the Alamo Bowl. His numbers are also impressive. 173.75 rating, 3,859 yards, 34 TDs, 8 INTs to go along with 561 rushing yards and another 11 TDs on the ground. I know Bradford has more yards and TDs, but I feel that beating him head-to-head actually means something. At the very least, his girlfriend is hotter than Tebow’s and Bradford’s.

Jahvid Best, RB, California: This was one of the easiest choices on the list. In most years there are at least three star running backs to choose from, but Best is the premier back this year in college football and it is not even close. Last year his numbers were staggering: 1,580 rushing yards on just 194 carries. That is an average of over 8 yards per carry! Oh, and he did not fumble the ball one time. He might be the fastest running back West of Florida and he hits the hole quicker than Travis Henry. In a down year for running backs, look for Best to make it all the way to New York for the Heisman presentation…though he has no chance at winning it.

Roddy Jones, FB, Georgia Tech: I doubt many people know who Roddy Jones is outside of Georgia. What I do know is that Georgia fans are more than familiar with Jones as he was last seen tearing up the hedges while running all over them. Last year Jones rumbled for 690 yards from the full back position — Tech actually calls them different names, but you don’t need to know that. He averaged 8.5 yards per carry as he was the third option to run Paul Johnson’s triple option after QB Josh Nesbit and RB Jonathan Dwyer. Look for Jones to get more carries this year, which could lead to Tech finishing up with two 1,000-yard rushers.

Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State: The Cowboys are all about offense and Bryant is their best player on that side of the ball. He has the size (6-2, 215) and the speed to dominate games. Watch last year’s Holiday Bowl against Oregon for further proof. The moment he went down with an injury, the Oklahoma State offense went to shit. Last year Bryant went nuts, totaling 1,480 receiving yards with 19 touchdowns. With the Pokes bringing back their quarterback and running back, look for Bryant to equal his 2008 numbers before he bolts for the NFL.

AJ Green, WR, Georgia: Last year there were two standout freshmen in college football at the wide receiver position. Green was one and fellow SEC’er Julio Jones was another. I went with Green because I like his hands and speed better, though Jones has the edge in route running and strength. It is similar to the Randy Moss vs. T.O. argument, just on a less-talented scale. Green hauled in 56 catches for 963 yards last year as a true freshman. While he has a drop off in quarterback with Joe Cox replacing Matt Stafford, he should be stronger and faster this year and will top the 1,000 mark in yards.

Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma: As the NFL has embraced the pass-catching tight end, so to has college football. The tight end has become a serious weapon in the college and NFL game. This year the best tight end is easily Jermaine Gresham of OU. He is huge (6-6) and has the speed and strength to destroy linebackers who get the unenviable task of covering him. Or he could be left alone like he was when he did this. Gresham is a red zone nightmare for defensive coordinators and he proved as much last season. He finished with 66 catches, 950 yards and 14 touchdowns. He averaged, as a tight end, over 14 yards per catch. With Sam Bradford back for one more season, look for Gresham to thread the cookie dough-soft Big 12 defenses for a second year running.

Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State: There isn’t much to say about offensive lineman stats wise as they can be misleading. Okung is a man-child who is going to eat children this year. He’s 6-6 and literally eats children for breakfast.

Jeff Byers, OG, Southern California: Byers was an all-world recruit from Colorado and has since become a very good offensive lineman. His can play both the left and the right guard positions and, if it were not for a stud center on his own team (teaser!!) he would be playing center for USC.

Kristofer O’Dowd, C, Southern California: I don’t know much about O’Dowd and I’d be lying if I said that I did. He is a center. He is a very good one. Therefore he makes the list. If this were last year I could say the dude from California had this one in the bag, but he is now in the pros. Maybe some ex-centers could enlighten me as to the merits of what makes a great center great because I simply have no clue.

Rodney Hudson, OG, Florida State: Hudson came on strong last year and under offensive line guru Rick Trickett he should punch his ticket to the first round of the NFL draft. He has good quickness and is a beast in the strength department. He as an All-ACC selection last year and he should be poised to make a run at the All-American list this year.

Ciron Black, OT, LSU: Not only does he have a sweet name, he is also a badass offensive tackle. He has started the last 40 games for LSU at left tackle and will put that number into the 50’s if he can stay healthy for one more season. He is a lock to be a first-round selection in next year’s NFL draft, and he will most likely be the top offensive lineman in the SEC this year.
