It seems we have an instant replay debate brewing again, this time involving Major League Baseball. This coming after the epically bad call at home that cost the Twins a possible comeback win, or at least a tie with the A’s. Of course the Twins should have never been put in that position, but that’s a story for another time. The real issue here, besides the Twins’ bullpen, is whether instant replay use should be extended beyond home run calls to “bang bang” plays on the diamond?
While I don’t consider myself a baseball purist (I’m pro DH and voting Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire into the HOF), this is an issue I feel that has no place in the game of baseball. For one I think everyone will agree that the games take long enough as it is to complete, why slow things down even further with coaches being able to challenge a set number of calls? And this is where the discussion gets all “purist-y”. To me one of the greatest aspects of baseball is its’ opportunity for human error, even when it hurts your favorite team. If replay would be extended to possibly all scenarios we would never have the legends, or atrocities depending on your leanings, of Steve Bartman or Jeffrey Maier. While these incidents may have negatively affected your favorite team, for baseball as a whole it created a great lore surrounding them. It’s these stories, like Babe Ruth calling his shot, that make baseball so great. But, it’s really the time issue that concerns me the most.
So what say you, more replay or no?
Speaking of baseball, here’s today’s action
MIL @ PIT
BAL @ NYY
CHC @ PHI
ARZ @ COL
MIN @ OAK
FLA @ SDG
SF @ ATL
SEA @ DET
NYM @ WAS
CLE @ TOR
BOS @ TEX
STL @ HOU
LAA @ KC
TAM @ CHW
CIN @ LAD
Remember, for those who are getting the free preview of MLB Extra Innings the preview ends today so make sure to check it out. Lucky for me, the channel the Twins’ game is on doesn’t seem to want to work, so much for using MLB Extra Innings to my advantage.

under immense pressure from sparty and friends….espn finally reports on roethlisberger
(Quote)
haha…but they use the end of the article to promote the shaq show….priceless
(Quote)
set number of instant replay challenges + 10 second pitch-clock – hitters calling timeout = overall improvement

The funny thing now is, the reason why ESPN didn’t report the story at first is bigger than the actual Roethlisberger story.

i am not a purist really but reversing a call may not be so bad..but eventually it leads to arguing balls and strikes…then that leads to hits v. errors….it could get messy quickly…the other problem in baseball is there is nothing to lose…no time outs…no loss of down…what would they take away …an out?
fix baseball by either standardizing the fairness of interleague play where everyone plays everyone on a rotational basis or get rid of it (nl east v. al east….next year nl east plays al central) or get rid of it
oh and… can the DH

I think baseball and I were just never meant for each other, I’ll just stick to my 9 months of football and basketball and consider that good enough.

I do to, although I can’t think of a whole lot of NY Post people that show up on ESPN shows.

Speaking of the Twins, they got waxed this afternoon 16-1 by the worst offense in the AL. Even worse, it appears that Joe Mauer may in fact be human.

I just threw up in my mouth.

The DH is dumb, and I hate baseball. If you can’t hit for yourself, even as a pitcher, you shouldn’t be playing. I think I can honestly say that is the worst rule change ever.

i don’t like the DH, but before 1998 i probably would have thought differently. i love the added strategy without it, don’t think i could go back

According to the Post-Dispatch, Daddy Dunc is not a happy camper at all, and La Russa isn’t exactly sending the Cards FO thank you notes. Lugo, however, is a mystery. I have no idea what the thinking is there, unless they’re going to flip him for someone else.

yeah that would be like sd trading AWAY gwynn jr. at this point…i could see them giving up ankiel maybe…but duncan…
