Seventh Inning Stretch: Baseball Purism Edition.

By admin

358658_l1It seems we have an instant replay debate brewing again, this time involving Major League Baseball. This coming after the epically bad call at home that cost the Twins a possible comeback win, or at least a tie with the A’s. Of course the Twins should have never been put in that position, but that’s a story for another time. The real issue here, besides the Twins’ bullpen, is whether instant replay use should be extended beyond home run calls to “bang bang” plays on the diamond?

While I don’t consider myself a baseball purist (I’m pro DH and voting Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire into the HOF), this is an issue I feel that has no place in the game of baseball. For one I think everyone will agree that the games take long enough as it is to complete, why slow things down even further with coaches being able to challenge a set number of calls? And this is where the discussion gets all “purist-y”. To me one of the greatest aspects of baseball is its’ opportunity for human error, even when it hurts your favorite team. If replay would be extended to possibly all scenarios we would never have the legends, or atrocities depending on your leanings, of Steve Bartman or Jeffrey Maier. While these incidents may have negatively affected your favorite team, for baseball as a whole it created a great lore surrounding them. It’s these stories, like Babe Ruth calling his shot, that make baseball so great. But, it’s really the time issue that concerns me the most.

So what say you, more replay or no?

Speaking of baseball, here’s today’s action

Remember, for those who are getting the free preview of MLB Extra Innings the preview ends today so make sure to check it out. Lucky for me, the channel the Twins’ game is on doesn’t seem to want to work, so much for using MLB Extra Innings to my advantage.
