WWF IN PRIMETIME!

By sparty

wwfthemaineventBack in the late 80s and early 90s, there was rarely a time that one would be able to watch a World Wrestling Federation show live on TV.  Monday Night Raw would not air for a few more years, and the classic Saturday Night’s Main Event was mostly on tape delay.  NBC ended up airing 3 primetime episodes of The Main Event.  The first one involved the evil twin brother of referee Dave Hebner, Earl, counting to 3 on Hulk Hogan and giving Andre the Giant the victory, even though Hogan clearly had his shoulder up.  Hogan would toss Earl out of the ring.  The second Main Event had the epic breakup of the Mega-Powers, Hogan and Randy “Macho Man” Savage.

Hogan and Savage would go on to have a classic rivalry, with Hogan winning the title at Wrestlemania V.  They would have other battles after that, but one of the most memorable was the final live primetime episode that had Buster Douglas as the guest referee.  Originally, Mike Tyson was supposed to be in that role, but he was upset in Buster just weeks before.  He pulled out of the appearance and the WWF quickly signed Douglas.  We all knew that Douglas would get involved in someway.  Since he was the heavyweight champion of the world, we were all just waiting for him to pop someone.
