LIST TIME!!!

By sparty

Georgia Florida FootballWe are kinda bored, aren’t you?  There is never a better way to get rid of boredom on a blog than by posting a completely objective list.

Today we I look at 5 coaches in college football, and rank them in order of who will theoretically win a National Title first.

1. Mark Richt – Georgia.  As the head coach of the Bulldogs, Richt has done nothing but win football games.  Since taking the job before the 2001 season, Richt has compiled an 82-22 record, with 2 SEC titles, and a 2-1 record in BCS Bowls.  After a successful 2007 season in which the Dawgs finished ranked #2 in the AP Poll, 2008 was supposed to be Richts best team yet.  But an early season drubbing at the hands of Alabama surprised many.  A few weeks later, they were humiliated by the eventual champion Florida Gators, 49-10.

The rest of the list after the jump.

2.  Frank Beamer – Virgina Tech.  Hokies football was an absolute joke upon Beamers arrival in Blacksburg.  He slowly built up the program to respectability in the in the early 90s, then shocked everyone with back-to-back Big East titles in the mid-90s, including a Sugar Bowl win over #9 Texas.   Beamer, along with electric QB Michael Vick, would lead the the Hokies to another Sugar Bowl appearance in 1999.   They would end up being blown out by Florida State, but would finish the season ranked #2 in the country. A few years later, Va Tech would move to the ACC, where they have won 4 of 5 conference titles.

3.  Rich Rodriguez – Michigan.  Yep, you read that right.  Even though Michigan suffered through on of its worst seasons ever, Rich Rodriguez remains one of the best coaches in the nation.  The philosophy was completely turned upside down in Ann Arbor last year, but dramatic improvements will be noticed this year.  Dick-Rod completely resurrected the West Virginia program.  This was a program that was ranked once in any poll at seasons end in 11 years.  He just missed out at a National Title game birth berth by dropping the “Backyard Brawl” to the underdog Pitt Panthers.  Rodriguez had great success as an offensive coordinator at Tulane and Clemson prior to his hire at WVU.

4. Chris Petersen – Boise State.  Our old buddy makes the list.  What Petersen has done at a small time program is really impressive.  That is why there was such a firestorm when a little blog had reported that he was taking a more high profile job.  Anyway you want to cut it, any SEC job is more high profile.  It is understandable why he remains in demand each season. While he battles coaching rumors and scientology rumors, he has compiled a 35-5 record in just 3 seasons while at the helm of the Broncos.   Most impressive was their thrilling Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma in 2006.  As a non-BCS team, they finished with #5 in the country, and undefeated.  If Petersen ever does except accept a bigger job, he most certainly increases his chances at winning the big game.

5. Mark Dantonio-Michigan State. Yep, call it a homer pick.  Dantonio is doing everything right at Michigan State as he enters into his 3rd year. He already has improved recruiting to levels that Sparty hasn’t seen since the up and down George Perles years.  The Spartans finished with back-to-back 7 win seasons for the first time in 20 years.  Prior to that, he helped give life to Cincinnati Bearcats football program.  Dantonio is now putting serious dent into Big 10 recruiting, by grabbing recruits that typically would be signing with Ohio State or Michigan.
