Yesterday evening, ESPN was reporting that a 3-way deal was in the works between the Chicago Bulls, Portland Trailblazers and the Utah Jazz. The primary pieces in the deal would send Kirk Hinrich to Portland, Tyrus Thomas to the Jazz, and Carlos Boozer to the Bulls. There was not mention in the report as to who the Trailblazers would be giving up in the deal and to whom. Not long after they published that report, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports tweeted that no deal was in the works. Early this morning, Yahoo did post that ESPN was reporting this deal, but did not confirm anything.
ESPN in recent years has taken a back seat to other sports related sites when it comes to breaking news. Ken Rosenthal has obliterated Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark when it comes to free agent signings and the Trade Deadline in July. While Jay Glazer at FoxSports and Adam Schefter (formerly of NFL Net now with ESPN) were breaking stories, Chris Mortensen was giving us reports on how Eli Manning would miss the first month of the NFL season (never backing down) even though Eli said he was playing that following Sunday. For the most part, they have had the edge in basketball news with Chad Ford, Marc Stein, Ric Bucher, and Chris Broussard. However, this past offseason, Adrian Wojnarowski has been beating everyone to the punch on mega-deals and free agent signings. He was the first to report the Michael Curry firing, and the first FA agreements of Ben Gordan and Charlie Villanueva. ESPN’s Chris Broussard was the first to report something that LeBron apparently didn’t say.
ESPN is always very careful as to how the publish reports, especially those that they break. They typically do not indicate specifically where their sources originate from. Wojo at least stated that he had spoken with a source from the Bulls that said nothing no deal was discussed. ESPN was even floating the deal on their crawl all night, as to make it seem like the deal was imminent, but updated the article late last night and has it speak more as speculation. Someone from an NBA front office may very well have told them of a deal being talked about, but rumors fly through all NBA teams front offices.
Yahoo is also very careful as to how they break a story, but they get very specific. When they first reported that the Celtics offered Rondo and Allen for Stuckey, Prince and Hamilton, they pointed to the fact that it was discussed by lower management and that GM’s Joe Dumars and Danny Ainge had not spoken to one another.
ESPN sees the numbers that YahooSports has been getting as of late, and how they are starting to leave ESPN.com in the dust. They know that Yahoo is becoming the place that a lot of people are going to get accurate and first-hand knowledge. Maybe if ESPN wasn’t too busy making their reporters into TV stars, they could actually report accurate information on their website, and be more confident with their sources.
ESPN did not make up this report, and it very well could be accurate, but recent history has shown otherwise. Just looking at the deal makes very little sense. First of all, it gives no indication as to who the Blazers would be giving up to receive Hinrich. It also makes little sense for the Jazz to trade for Thomas, as they are trying to keep Paul Millsap, and they both play the same position. The Jazz would be better of keeping Boozer for the year and having him come off the books next season and be in the market for a FA.

ESPN does not turn their reporters into TV Stars!

well aware. what is strange is that the sox have beat up on the AL East, but struggled against the West. sparty(Quote)
+1 Trey…
… and I saw this deal on the crawl last night and immediately thought “wait, who are the Blazers giving up? Can’t be a bunch of nobodies… this makes no sense”.
You know it’s getting bad when people look at “breaking news” on ESPN and immediately call bullshit. Big D(Quote)
What is even more strange is that they are tied despite the Yanks being 0-8 against the Red Sox this year.
Going up the final mountain to the ski resort in the first mountain stage in the Tour right now. A break has a huge lead so there will most likely be a race to win the stage (I like Egoi Martinez) and the race to take the overall lead. cycledan(Quote)
First of all, ESPN still beats Yahoo most of the time. It’s just that ESPN is so big that when they report something first, absolutley nobody notices.
And is there a source for Yahoo catching up to ESPN in numbers?
Let’s also not forget that some people don’t go to ESPN.com as much because they get a bunch of the content on ESPNRadio or ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNews or anything else ESPN. Yahoo has none of those mediums. guyinthecorner(Quote)
That is complete crap. Wojo (Yahoo) and an unknown Twitter (NBA_Rumors_News) guy have KILLED ESPN this off season when it comes to Trades and FA news.
Sorry GITC, the stats show it. GatorTrey(Quote)
I use Yahoo first for my sports headlines because I like the simpler and faster format. I don’t want automatic videos popping up and all the fance formatting. I also like some of the Yahoo writers. If I just want to check the baseball standings or look up a guy’s batting average, I find Yahoo easier to find out what I want. cycledan(Quote)
Also, more people get their breaking news from the internet than any other medium. Not even close. GatorTrey(Quote)
I am with GITC, what numbers show that Yahoo is gaining in popularity to ESPN? I think Yahoo has huge numbers mostly because of their Fantasy sports, not their breaking news. cbh49er(Quote)
It’s not popularity as much as it is getting the news out. Bucher is under fire right now and has been taunted for it. GatorTrey(Quote)
Trey, I’m referring to what Sparty wrote.

I know ESPN has talked about getting rid of the Insider subspriptions because Yahoo and Blogs have really put a dent into what it did offer.
I don’t think ESPN is going down or will ever be displaced, but as far as quality goes it’s Natty Light to some other outlet’s Heinekin GatorTrey(Quote)

Stats that say Yahoo SPorts is more popular. GatorTrey(Quote)
Color me surprised. cbh49er(Quote)
your move, gitc. sparty(Quote)
I had no idea that we were talking about comscore. I don’t trust them for reasons that I can’t detail here, as well as a couple of facts like they only measure 2 million people that signed up (some say it’s not a random sample, some say it’s too small, some say both), their ratings are at odds with Neilsen whenever they come out, and they have had involvement with Yahoo such as doing joint projects.
Again, when it comes to news, I trust ESPN because they are right most of the time. As much as I love sports blogs, they love making a huge deal out of ESPN being wrong and never make a big deal out of them being right or anyone else being wrong.
And as far as the thing about ESPN platforms taking away from the .com, it isn’t BS. I don’t need to go to ESPN.com to read as many things because I hear the opinions on the networks or radio. I know plenty of people who get ESPN’s take from their other mediums and visit yahoo.com to get another take.
And we all know that Yahoo is a ton of fantasy traffic because they were around first. guyinthecorner(Quote)
Good! I remember a few years back when the Insider information was worth it. Now they mark too much as Insider info and it’s all stuff that if you simply know how to navigate the Internet, you can find elsewhere. The Bull Gator(Quote)
CBS Sports blows Yahoo out of the water for Fantasy use though…
As for ESPN being right most the time…again it’s crap. It was ESPN who reported Turkoglu to Portland (Turns out Turkoglu never commited)…They were the LAST to get the Vince Carter trade…
Not to mention the million other things they’ve really fucked the the last 5 years…TO suiside being the most prominent.
Most of ESPN’s breaking news comes from other sources, and when they do finally nail one, you see them bragging up and down about how ESPN’S JOHN CLAYTON FIRST REPORTING.
As someone who has been there, many organizations actively ignore ESPN and their circus and tend to leak their new to other organizations… GatorTrey(Quote)
because they are reporting news that someone else already reported.
this is laughable. because the other sites get it right. As i explained in my post, Rosenthal and Glazer kick everyones ass in baseball and football. Wojo is killing it in NBA, and Yahoo is breaking all the college sports scandals. sparty(Quote)
Am I the only guy out there who likes Yahoo’s interface over CBS’s, for fantasy? HawkEye19(Quote)
I just checked the twitter account time stamps for a bunch of these things. Like the Marion deal, Parker signing, and Hedo signings as well as a few more. Bucher had them all before.

My point is that each place gets things at varying times. Of course you can pick out single stories and say that ESPN was beat. My point is that everyone does exactly that. Everybody knows a few examples. But that’s out of 1000s of pieces of news a week. Nobody ever makes a big deal out of ESPN beating everybody to the punch, do they? guyinthecorner(Quote)
that wasn’t your point. first you said yahoo doesn’t pull the number espn does. they do, I used stats. you did not. then you said ESPN still beats Yahoo most of the time, but they rarely do. and if they do, it is full of inaccuracies. watch at the trade deadline for mlb at how many trade pieces they get incorrect. sparty(Quote)
of course, we will be comparing them to fox sports for baseball. sparty(Quote)

The only reason I go to Yahoo! Sports instead of ESPN nowadays is because ESPN’s front page has way too much crap going on. Yahoo!’s page loads quickly with the headlines clearly displayed. The only reason I go to ESPN anymore is for Bill Simmons, and that’s only when my RSS feed tells me that a new column is up. Which is rarely. Eric(Quote)
