The Morning After: 4th of July Edition

By sparty

USA! USA! USA!

We actually didn’t become independent 233 years ago on this date. It was actually July 2nd that there was a legal separation between the colonies and Great Britain. July 4th is actually the day that the written document, the Declaration of Independence, was approved. Oddly enough, it wasn’t signed by all of the 56 men until August 2nd, 1776. But that is typical of most holidays. Kinda like Christmas. Jesus wasn’t really born on December 25th.

Seriously, what is up with the ugly red hats that MLB is making the teams wear this year for the 4th of July weekend? These are ugly and distracting. They could have just had the stars and stripes on each teams insignia instead.

The Yankees still only sit a 1.5 back of Boston in the AL East after AJ Burnett shut down the Blue Jays and the Red Sox lost in extras to the Mariners. Losing each game to Boston this year is just mind boggling.

They had to play 16 innings in the Metrodome to declare a winner. The Tigers defeated the Twins in the long affair.

This Albert Pujols guy is like really really good and stuff. Question: Is he not getting more endorsements and attention because he is not an American? Better question: Is he not getting more endorsement and attention because companies don’t want to pull the plug on another star baseball player if they turn out to be cheating?

We all like to kill Pittsburgh each year for dropping players with a lot of talent. They are still only 6 games under .500 after yesterdays win over the Marlins.

Manny Returns!!! The Dodgers win, but no thanks to him. Ramirez went 0-3.

Speaking of roiders, Rafael Palmeiro is still living near a river in Egypt.

He was going to sign with Portland, but then decided he rather go play in Canada. Hedo Turkoglu really wanted a 1st round loss in the playoffs. I don’t get the move professionally. Bosh will be long gone next summer and the team will most likely end up back in obscurity.

Andy Roddick needs to win this one for Pete! Roddick was supposed to be the heir apparent to the Sampras/Agassi era of Tennis. He has had minimal success, some due to his own fault, but mostly due to Roger Federer’s dominance. Roddick can hush a lot of critics with a win tomorrow in the Wimbledon final against Federer, and keep Roger away from winning the most Grand Slam finals at least for a couple more months.

The French continue to suck. Can’t wait for Lance to win it again.

A day after Ron Artest announces he will play for the Lakers, Phil Jackson announces he will return. Did he really even do anything this past year? Every time you would see a peak into their huddle, it looked like Kobe was the only one ever talking.

If it wasn’t for a Holiday today, and tomorrow being Sunday, I am sure Avery Johnson would just be announced as the new coach.

I have always said that when I go, that I want to be cremated. But you can now be buried in a human size banana peel.

A political link just for the holiday: Florida gov’t might be finally doing something right.

No way Roddick beats Federer. Roger is too strong. I think I’ll watch the Williams brothers this morning.  (Quote)

Why does the grass always look crappy in Great Britain? Tennis, golf… you’d think it would look greener with all of the rain they get. I’ve play golf on better looking greens in the desert in 110 heat.  (Quote)

the grass looks great at wimbledon the first round. but when you have all those matches being played on it, it takes a beating quickly. hence why you have the old saying…”GET OFF MY LAWN!!!”  (Quote)

Do you think Avery’s style fits in Detroit? He just seems so Napoleonic (is that word?).  (Quote)

FT- i think part of what he offers is what they need. he may have learned that is control issues cost him his team. but then again, maybe the pistons need someone more strong headed like him. kinda like Larry Brown was.  (Quote)

I wonder if Charlie can pull his hand back from taking Fed $’s long enough to sign this.  (Quote)
