The Morning After: July 3rd, 2009

By sparty

The Morning AfterHappy 3rd of July!  Or as a lot of  the business world is treating it, 4th of July observed.  I am enjoying a fine brewed cup of Starbucks coffee (Italian Roast) as I type this post here this morning.  I am looking forward to a day out with the family with zero concerns other than when I will sneak my run into the day.  It is nice to have those high class problems every once in awhile.

It will be an extremely light day around these parts, just like it would be for a Saturday or a Sunday.  We will be back to normal on Monday, as we continue to drag ourselves through the rest of July until football camps start up and Ocho Cinco and others give us something to talk about.  Of course, college football practice will have begun, and the trash talk from the writers will soon follow.

We will find out today who is in the men’s final of Wimbledon later this morning, but the Williams sisters have already continued their dominance of the women on the lawn.

There was a trade without an actual trade in the NBA yesterday.  The Rockets are now the employers of Trevor Ariza, and Ron Artest is says he’s a member of the Lakers.  For the sake of basketball purposes, this makes the Lakers even better.  But Artest is still somewhat of a head case.

Yao Ming is still having his foot looked at by doctors.  If Yao is done, look for another name to be taken off the vaunted 2010 list of potential FAs.  His teammate Tracy McGrady already won’t be as in demand.

The Miami Heat contacted Artest before he headed out to LA, but they also checked in with Allen Iverson.  Hey, Riley did win with Jason Williams as his PG.

Calvin Pace needs to stop cheating.  Then again, he plays for the Jets.

The NFL is teaching rookies how to spend their money wisely.  I got one: Don’t buy your friends all new cars.

Here are 6 things you might be cheering for in the upcoming college football season.

Attack of the killer bees!!! The most exciting part of the Padres and the Astros.

Now as I go to enjoy the rest of my day off, I leave you with the best GIF i have seen in awhile:

Serious light day. Well I am in the office. Went out for sushi with the boys last night. Had a couple too many Sapora’s or whatever that crap Japanese beer is called. Not really in drinking shape anymore.

Tour de France starts tomorrow. Lance is making his comeback but the problem is that he is not even the best rider on his team. Alberto Contador won the Tour 2 years ago. He didn’t race the Tour of France last year but he did win the other two grand Tours, Italy and Spain. Will be interesting to see if Lance and Contador will both be in contention.  (Quote)

I’m pretty sure if the French had a choice between world peace and catching Lance Armstrong cheating, they would choose the latter.

The basic problem is that the French have not won the Tour since Bernard Hinault in 1985. Since then American Greg LeMond won it 3 times, Lance Armstrong won it 7 times and Floyd Landis won it 1 time but was DQ’ed for taking testosterone.

Kind of analagous to a Brit winning the British open again.  (Quote)

Imagine if Andy Murray wins Wimbledon. Won’t happen but it would be insane in England. Still, I am going for Andy Roddick for the simple reason is that he is an American and it is the 4th of July tomorrow. Besides, Federer has won enough already.  (Quote)

Just looked it up. Think 1985 is bad for the French,

Murray is trying to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936. No British man has won any Grand Slam championship since Perry at the U.S. Open later that year.

1936 is approaching Chicago Cubs proportions.  (Quote)

    Asteroids film?

That is about as dumb an idea as I have heard in a long time. Actually, I can’t even understand why any studio has to buy the rights. There is no story in the video game so any movie is basically starting from scratch.  (Quote)

This is exactly why I don’t go to the movies anymore. Studios don’t give me a reason to. They make it easy for me. 10 dollars saved.  (Quote)

The battles of Andys thus far is very high quality tennis. Crowd is highly into it. Shame NBC is forcing the people in the states watch it illegally online instead of showing it live  (Quote)

The French are totally incapable of achieving either.  (Quote)

Well Roddick over Murray. Do Americans start showing up at Wimbledon next year with 1936 shirts?

3/4 finalists are Americans. Not bad. Would love to see Roddick beat Federer. No, I don’t think it is likely but as they say, that’s why they play the game (or match in this case).  (Quote)

Yup. Always interesting after a trade to speculate on how it will work out.  (Quote)
