Hit and Run: July 2, 2009

Did you know that today is the something-year anniversary of Roger Clemens’ 350th win?  Do you even care now?  How is all this gonna work in about 50 years?  I mean, today is also the day that Roger Maris hit dingers #29 and #30 on the way to 61 homeruns during his historic 1961 season.  He was prolly on some kind of amphetamines or something, right?  RIGHT?

Anywho, the way history remembers certain aspects of a story is mind boggling sometimes.  Did you guys even know about all the controversy surrounding Maris hitting 61?  He was supposed to have an asterisk placed by the number in the record books because he accomplished the feat in 162 games as opposed to the 154 game Babe Ruth needed to hit 60 long balls.  I don’t really care to explain the whole story to you.  (Read the Wikipedia entry if you really want to know more.  I’m just gonna get right into yesterday’s action…

Bwoston Red Sox 6, Baltimore Orioles 5- I guess this would be payback, huh?  One night after losing late in the game with a 10-1 lead over the O’s (greatest comeback in Orioles history!!), the Socks hung 4 on the hapless O’s in the 9th inning to tie the game at 5-all and send it into extra innings where some dood named Julio Lugo singled in some other dood named Jacoby Ellsbury for the go-ahead run.  John Papelbon saved the game and passed Bob Stanley as the all-time saves leader for the Sawx.  I’ve never heard of any of these guys except for Papelbon, and only because he looks like this.  Does Nomah still play in Bwoston?

St. Louis Cardinals 2, San Francisco Giants 1 -The Cards won this boring display of spor…er, I mean, this pitchers duel.  Even though Colby Rasmus hit the walk-off homer, it should really just be chalked up to luck because earlier in the at bat Rasmus hit a very catchable foul popup to Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval…who dropped it.  It was the Giants 3rd error of the game after 10 straight error-free games.  Side note: recently traded Mark DeRosais 0-for-9 in his three games with the Cards.  That’s a decent batting average in beisbol, right?  (Bear with me, I’m fairly new at this.)

Cincinnati Reds 1, Arizona Diamondbacks 0- Another pitchers duel!!  At least this bore-fest ended after 8 1/2 innings instead of dragging all the way out to 9.  The recap says that Reds P Johnny Cueto”overcame a stiff back on Wednesday night” to notch the “W” for the Reds.  Big effing deal.  I overcame a stiff back to mow the lawn Tuesday night, play 4 games of racquetball yesterday afternoon, and throw a second coat of paint on a few walls at the crib last night.  Where’s my ESPN.com adulation??  The Reds called up INF Drew Sutton from Triple-A Louisville and optioned reliever Jared Burton, adding depth to their injury-depleted infield…at this point I’m just copying and pasting from the ESPN game recap.

LA Dodgers 1, Colorado Rockies 0- Jeebus, another pitchers duel?  The only new out of this game is that it was the 50th game without Man-Ram in the lineup, meaning he’s paid his debt to MLB for roiding and he’ll be eligible to be back in the lineup as early as Friday evening against the San Diego Fathers where he will begin his career-ending slump which must be due to age and can’t be from anything else.  San Diego’s starting pitchers this weekend against the Dodgers will be Chad Gaudin, Josh Geerand Josh Banks. Ramirez is 5 for 11 with a home run against Gaudin, and 2 for 3 with a homer against Geer. He has never faced Banks in the regular season (copying and pasting again).  Seriously though, approximately 96.3% of ESPN’s recap is about Manny and he didn’t even play.  Don’t believe me? Read it for yourself .

Minnesota Twins 5, Kansas City Royals 1- The Twins won…Joe Mauerraised his BA to 0.392 (a.k.a. a failing rate in the real world)…and the Royals are tied withthe Seattle Mariners in leading the league with 59 errors.  Aaaaaah beisbol, where mediocrity is embraced.

Here’s all the scores from yesterday:

I know this is beating a dead horse(I think his name was Barbaro), but if someone hates a sport, why have them write a post about it? That’s like me pontificating on the utter waste of time known as the NBA, or how overrated I think SEC football is; it’s counter-productive.
Yes, I’m a lifelong baseball fan. And yes, I know all of the history surrounding Maris’ run at *61(I was 9 years old at the time), so forgive me if I get a bit defensive. But here’s the thing; being talked down to(which is what these regular posts amount to) rankles me, so I feel the need to stand up for my favorite sport.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think Bruce likes it when I write Hit & Run.
