The Morning After: July 1, 2009

By GatorTrey

canadian2Oh Canada, our home and native land…Happy Canada Day! I know we did the “meet the authors” thing a few weeks ago, and you learned that my wife is a card carrying Canuck who grew up in Vancouver. In fact the first few weeks we dated my mom couldn’t remember her name so she called her “the Canadian girl.”

Just to note, Canada Day is my second favorite Canadian holiday, right after Canadian Thanksgiving.

For those few of you who might not have a clue about what I”m talking about, Canada Day is akin our Fourth of July…fireworks, BBQ, beer…And this year the first two games of the 2009 CFL Season!

Toronto at Hamilton – 7pm – TSN
Montreal at Calgary – 10pm – TSN

I have no clue what either team consists of but I’ll take Toronto and Calgary.  Get your bets in.

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Today also marks the opening of free agent negotiations in the NBA, while no one can sign for a week, teams started t actively pursue the apples of their eye at the stroke of midnight. The biggest dollars out there will be going to Hedo Turkoglu, Trevor Ariza, and Ben Gordon…Carlos Boozer elected not to opt out after saying he would in December, which begs the question.

What will teams be willing to spend on these guys? I think it will be a shock, as several teams are under the cap, but most don’t want to spend because the economy blows. For that reason, and the fact that next summer’s class is insane, you’ll probably see smaller contracts.

More later, but if I were a betting man…

Turkoglu – Portland
Gordon – Chicago
Ariza – Toronto
Odom – LA Lakers
Iverson – Charlotte
Rasheed – San Antonio

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

We went in plenty of depth about the Detroit coaching situation yesterday. Tim Floyd is avail!

Nuggets JR Smith was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the negligent death of his friend who died in a car wreck Smith was involved in last year.

Coach K is starting his own rumors again. I still believe the guy would be one hell of an NBA coach, admit it, you’d love to see him there.

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

The Pirates shipped Hinske to the Yanks?! But wait the Pirates weren’t done dealing! Two deals, would you have guessed the Pirates were the most active team in the early trade period?!

Boston lost Lowell for a few weeks, when questioned David Ortiz said “who?”

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Anyone see that Orioles comeback on the Red Sox? The Yanks have won 6 and the Rays have won 7 straight…tough loss.

With two days left in the MLB All Star voting there are only a handful of votesseparating Youkilis and Teixeira. Considering MLB baseball allows you to vote 25 times a day I can see nerdy Boston fan and nerdy New York fan clicking away on 5 or 6 computers this AM. Sadly, both will make the team though.

Hope you went chalk on yesterday’s Wimbledon results.

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Michael Vick is leaving his construction job in Virginia to begin working with kids. Just keep him away from the play pins. Rumors state that Roger Godell is not going to reinstate him this year. The Orlando UFL team holds his rights. Guess where PETA will be this fall?

Donte Stallworth’s 911 tape was released. Hopefully he’s able to get back on his feet and is a better man because of this incident.

YHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

The US Senate has decided to take a look at college football and their current postseason. I don’t think anything will come of it, whether it is an antitrust violation or not is a fine line, but I would err on the belief that it is not. The smaller conference do have a shot, they just need to be undefeated with a string schedule and they need the 2nd best auto bid team to have 2 losses.

LANE KIFFIN NEWS!!! Laney told the press that it is important they find a quarterback.

‘Coach, who’s going to throw us the ball?’

You got two months Lane…two months.

Shaq Diesel is the greatest hip-hop album ever…and I’m out.

Nobody should be happy that they are spending time on this. but hey, anything to distract americans from the cap and trade bill that they can now pass with a 60 seat filibuster.  (Quote)

As fans, we always hope the superstar will take a pay cut in order to resign key elements for a championship. I was disappointed that Kobe didn’t opt out in order to resign for less. Yes, it’s his money, but my wishful thinking.  (Quote)

No, I’m too lazy to write in Green, so 25 votes for Lowrie.  (Quote)

    Rasheed – San Antonio

If Sheed is willing to take the mid-level, there are rumblings that he might want to come to Boston, because he’s buddies with KG.  (Quote)

From Lane Kiffin news: UT has only one offensive lineman committed: Jose Jose from Miami.

I am in favor of both cap and trade and the senate investigating college football. So I guess we disagree there.  (Quote)
