Tuesdays Edition of Seventh Inning Stretch by KnightsWhoSayNi
With Roger Federer winning the French Open this year and Rafael Nadal winning Wimbledon last year it seems that the surface for the tennis majors is less of a big deal than it used to be. Maybe someone could conceivably pull off the grand slam now. That got me thinking since I was born in 1976 I wasn’t really old enough to remember anyone winning a grand slam in tennis or in golf or winning the Triple Crown in baseball or horse racing. So which of these events is most likely to occur?
I think tennis is the most likely, if you’re the overwhelming best player out there, you only have to face one player at a time and not the whole field at once. The surfaces make some difference based on your style of play but it can be overcome if you’re dominant.
The Triple Crown in horse racing is the next most likely because we often have a horse winning the first 2 races then getting knocked off in the Belmont. One of those horses is bound to catch a lucky break one of these years.
The Grand Slam in golf is a bit less likely in my opinion because even when Tiger was at his absolute most dominant he still didn’t do it, although he did win 4 in a row. But now the field has caught up and I just don’t think Tiger will ever be that much better than the whole field again.
Finally, I think the Triple Crown in baseball is just impossible anymore. The power hitters hit too many homers for the guys who hit for average to win the other 2. It’s too specialized now.
In tennis action today: The Williams brothers both cruised, Safina held on in 3 sets and Dementieva beat someone.
MLB: No day games, I’m soooo surprised.

Well he may be leading homers and RBIs, but you gotta win average too to get the Triple crown and he’s not in the top 5 in average. I find it unlikely he’ll move up to first in average if he’s not in the top 5 right now. He’s having an awesome year like he always does. I just don’t think he’ll win the Triple crown, nor will anyone else any time soon.

He’s .001 behind Pierre. I don’t think he will get it either, but he’s going to be damn close.

Honestly, I don’t think any of the 4 will happen again in my lifetime. It would be huge if any of them did.
