True but you aren’t looking at a HUGE difference. State income taxes for the most part are relatively low. No matter where they play they’re paying Federal income tax which is the worst of it. So in deciding which contract to take the state it’s in probably makes less than 1 million dollars worth of tax difference on the big contracts.

I would bet that almost all professional athletes live in Texas, Florida, or Delaware (just like the entire military does). But, the players will pay tax in whatever state they earned the money – so a player on the Orlando Magic will pay income taxes on every game played outside of the state of Florida no matter where he claims is his residence. I could explain it all more, but no one really cares except to know that it isn’t a valid argument or every player would go to Orlando or San Antonio as a free agent.
