The Morning After:June 26, 2009

By mikeychx

The Morning AfterGotta start out by acknowledging the death of the King of Pop….and also mention the death of Farrah Fawcett. I cant help but to wonder if these things…as they usually do…come in threes. I wonder if Patrick Swayze is next. Anyways, thoughts go out to these guys and their families this morning. Michael Jackson was 50, Fawcett was only 62. Both gone too soon…regardless of how you feel about them or what they did in their lives.

I believe we are gonna have complete recap today of the NBA draft…but here are the results in case you missed them. Tyler Hansbrough as #13? That will either be genius or….never mind it will back fire. I would cover the Vince Carter trade, but we did so yesterday. He is from nearby Daytona Beach. I gotta say, if I were an athlete – I would wanna play in Orlando, Tampa, or Miami….no state taxes mean more actual dollars in my pocket. This seems to always get overlooked when signing deals doesn’t it?

Can you get the big slow guy off of my team? Did Steve Nash ” Kobe” Shaq out of town?

Is baseball on television due for an update? I don’t know if anyone would really notice this small enhancement…but it seems buzz-worthy to me. Speaking of baseball….is this part of whats wrong, or whats right with the Cubs?

Gotta hit on the Michael Jackson thing again really quick….was Chad Johnson not around for 9/11?

Here is some stunning news for you this morning regarding a cheerleaders mom….I wish it was naughty or NSFW…turns out, it’s just from Oklahoma.

Here is all the latest from Wimbledon, including Roddick winning as well as Lleyton Hewitt…

Your MLB Scores….will the Cubs ever win again?  Is their best baseball ahead of them? Is A Rod back now? Anyone wanna trade me for him in FBB?

Sparty Links:

Marvin Harrison may be on his way to catch passes from Brett Favre?

Carson Palmer thinks that Jon Kitna is the answer to all of Tony Romo’s problems.

One of the Giants biggest off-season acquisitions is now out for 8-10 weeks following hip surgery.

Brian Bruney is traveling with a portable hyperbaric chamber.   Isn’t that what Michael Jackson lived in?

When I learned about MJ, I said Patrick Swayze would be next. But, my wife reminded me of Ed McMahon, so Jackson was number 3 already.

Just wait till they get a pro team in Vegas. No state income tax there either. Plus… it’s Vegas.

OK, the tax issue does not matter what team a player represents, it matters where he claims as his state residence for income tax purposes. I would bet that almost all professional athletes live in Texas, Florida, or Delaware (just like the entire military does). But, the players will pay tax in whatever state they earned the money – so a player on the Orlando Magic will pay income taxes on every game played outside of the state of Florida no matter where he claims is his residence. I could explain it all more, but no one really cares except to know that it isn’t a valid argument or every player would go to Orlando or San Antonio as a free agent.

it is a valid argument if half of the games they play every year go untaxed

True but you aren’t looking at a HUGE difference. State income taxes for the most part are relatively low. No matter where they play they’re paying Federal income tax which is the worst of it. So in deciding which contract to take the state it’s in probably makes less than 1 million dollars worth of tax difference on the big contracts.
