Seventh Inning Stretch: Your Ad Here

By mikeychx

redsoxWednesday Night…J Rod from Two Big Boobs takes over in relief here at the top of the 7th.

So after spending several days hours minutes brainstorming ideas for tonight’s 7IS, I narrowed my possibilities to a few potential topics that I could rant about. The first involved me opining about the latest Brett Favre saga, from the perspective of a lifelong Vikings fan. But, I figured that either no one would be interested, or they had just had enough Brett Favre talk (I fall into the latter group as well). Secondly, I thought I could write about the absurdity that is the MLB’s amateur draft and how I thought it was wholly unfair to small market teams, and how it was time for a change. But, again, I figured no one would care about that either. So finally, I stumbled upon an article about the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, and their proclamation that they too would be willing to discuss selling advertising on their jerseys. Now while I, and just about every other American, could care less about women’s basketball; I have heard the topic of advertising on jerseys discussed numerous times, both in class and recently on national sports radio shows. It made me wonder whether it would be a viable option for mainstream sports in America? It’s already been done for major soccer futbol clubs in Europe and in the MLS and now WNBA here in America; could the NFL, the MLB, the NHL or the NBA be next? Before you dismiss the idea as totally farfetched, and that mainstream sports would never be desperate enough for that extra revenue, I heard Mark Cuban today say that for $5 million he’d be willing to sell advertising on his team’s jersey. Now Mark Cuban is quite the maverick (pun maybe intended) when it comes to professional owners, is it so wild to believe that a company wouldn’t be willing to pony up $5 mil. a year to basically own a professional team’s jerseys? Now let’s just assume that this idea took hold and your favorite team(s)’s jersey advertising rights were up for sale, whose corporate name and logo would you be willing to have sewn across the jerseys?

After pondering that question, feel free to move onto tonight’s action, or lack thereof. This is the second week in a row I’ve been sans NBA and NHL action, I’m starting to think the sports gods, or maybe the 7IS gods are against me. But, oh well, at least we have another chapter in the Yankees, Red Sox rivalry to look forward to tonight, as if we (everyone not named Sparty or John) haven’t had enough of it already.
