Joel Sherman seems to be a very grumpy person. Just about everything seems to upset him these days when it comes to the Yankees. The NY Post columnist this week took shots at mild mannered manager, Joe Girardi. The title of his article called Girardi, “dopey.” The Posts Phil Mushnick is known as “Mr Get Off My Lawn,” but Sherman just seems to be an angry, grumpy person. He takes offense to everything, and now is doing his best to make Girardi an enemy of the press in NY.
Girardi is tired of all the talk about Selena Roberts’ book. He is tired about answering questions revolving around it. He doesn’t understand the point of a salacious book like this, that seems to be mostly hearsay from the majority of excerpts that have been already been released. Is there anything wrong with what Girardi said?
“I don’t necessarily know why it has to be put in a book, unless the person volunteers it,” Girardi said. “I’ve never understood, whether it’s a book about Alex, or other people. A book about a president or whoever, I just don’t understand it. Maybe that’s short-sighted on my part, but I don’t understand it.”
What Girardi is talking about, are unauthorized biographies. They are typically books that paint a darker side of an individual. Not saying that A-Rod doesn’t have issues, but we are already aware of most of them. Girardi knows exactly why this was written. He knows it is to make Selena Roberts’ money (and so do some of Selena’s colleagues). He isn’t some simple folk as Sherman tries to paint him. The man went to Northwestern University. You aren’t dumb if you go there, even as an athlete. He played ball in NY and Chicago for the bulk of his career, he has the street sense. But he knows this whole thing is at the expense of his best player, and he is sick and tired of dealing with it. Geez, something tells me that Billy Martin wouldn’t be a big fan of having to answer these questions. Seems like Joel was spoiled by Joe Torre, who never dared to say anything.
Sherman takes what Girardi said as a personal attack towards his profession:
So if Girardi were the Czar of the Written Word, we would never read about how the personal lives of presidents influence their decision-making. Great. Or, in the case of Rodriguez, what influences shaped the most famous baseball player in the world to be so reckless, insecure, self-destructive and egomaniacal — by the way, all elements that impact the atmosphere of Girardi’s team
Girardi didn’t say that we would never read books like that. Remember the autobiography that came out a couple years ago that was almost as long as the Starr Report? Mickey Mantle also authored his own biography, and told of his exploits with women and drinking.
Then the final part of Sherman’s column:
Ultimately, this probably is Girardi’s awkward way of trying to defend Rodriguez. Knowing how ungrateful Rodriguez is, however, Girardi might end up regretting the decision to support A-Rod more than spitting all over the First Amendment.
Spitting all over the first amendment? Where did Girardi say that someone shouldn’t be allowed to write such drivel? He said he didn’t understand the point, but didn’t say it shouldn’t be allowed. Way to read into what he said to make yourself write a controversial article. You did a good job of being pissy enough to get people to read your column and others ridicule it. Do me a favor and eat a poison apple.

I understand Girardi’s position. As someone whe was once led to believe that Chris Petersen would be the next coach at Mississippi State, I can see why he would wonder why some things are put in print.

Dude, your first problem is trying to analyze something printed in that Murdoch rag that is the Post. The NY Post is written for high school dropouts who are looking for a two paragraph sensationalist article written at a 3rd grade reading level.
I feel awful when I hear about all those newspapers going under or having problems such as the Boston Globe. However the Post is one paper the world is better off without.
