The NFL has taken many steps into the globalization of their game. Recently, they have looked to Latin America and Mexico, starting a Spanish language site in conjunction with Univision called NFLatino.com. Until now, they had Tight End Tony Gonzalez as the focal point of this campaign, but he’s only part African American and Hispanic.
Enter Mark Sanchez…He’s a 3rd generation, full blooded Mexican American. In the Mexican-American community in Los Angeles, he’s been compared to Oscar De La Hoya and Fernando Valenzuela. During the 2007 Notre Dame game he wore mouth piece that featured the colors of the Mexican flag in honor of his heritage. He was active in the Latino community all through college, which included working with the mayor of LA in some heavily populated hispanic areas of town.
The NFL has focused on Mexico for many years, capped by a regular season game in Mexico City a few years ago. After that game NFL revenue in Mexico increase a projected 20-25%, leaving NFL officials looking for a way to continue this growth. Now it seems that the NFL would like to return to Mexico City in 2010, could the Jets be one of the teams on the field that day?
Folks, Mark Sanchez is about to ’splode in the NFL marketing campaign, especially overseas. Heres to hoping, he can handle the hype.

I’ll give the kid credit, he seemed to handle the LA Media pretty well as the starting quarterback for their pro franchise. I’m sure he’ll be fine in New York. And if he can handle those two cities, the rest of the world should be a breeze.
Now, it remains to be seen if he can actually play the game…

LA Media is nothing compared to the NY media.

I kinda want to see him suck, just so I’m right.

this title makes me remember shanoff spouting off on who the face of baseball is
there’s never just one face that represents the entire sport
That said he’s going to be a very good qb (just so that i can feel better about how he dismantled penn state in the rose bowl)

trey- you couldn’t use a picture of sanchez? we have one in the gallery. how can you have a post that says someone is the “face” of the NFL, and then not use a picture of the guy?

Peyeton is still the face of the NFL. as long as he has the most endorsements, that’s the guy.

A single player can be the face of a sport for a given market segment. The examples you gave above are good. You can also say Matsui and Ichiro make a lot of Japanese fans interested in baseball. Yao Ming makes a lot of Chinese watch basketball.
Over here, Lance Armstrong made Americans watch cycling while Phelps made Americans care about swimming for a couple of weeks.
So Sanchez can certainly make Mexican fans care about the NFL.

Tony Romo’s Mexican; so are Jeff Garcia and Ben Roethlisberger.
/only one of those three isn’t actually Mexican

…and the only reason Peyton has the most endorsements, is because Brady turns down most endorsement offers.

To be fair to Brady, goats aren’t a target market for most corporations. So that does limit his opportunities somewhat.

I’ll repeat what I said when the Vick case first broke. Vick will never play another down in the NFL.
He had one of the lowest QB ratings in the league. He is 28 now and had been in jail for a couple of years. He is not as fast and has been out of football so I feel that he is probably a worse passer and slower than he used to be.
He is toxic as far as publicity goes. No owner (except for Al Davis perhaps) wants angry animal rights protesters outside their stadium.
Bottom line though is that he really won’t be better than anyone’s starting QB right now and silly to sign him as a backup.

He’ll be a RB/H-Back…he’ll be back. Someone will take a chance.

vick will play. especially with teams using college formations now.

As an athlete at other positions, I think it is likely but not at QB.
