The Morning After: April 8, 2009

By GatorTrey

tmalogoReaders, authors, and anyone else. I apologize for the tardiness of TMA as well as the lack of post. Things beyond my control made it unable for me to 1) post anything until now and 2) contact anyone to cover for me. I’ll have some links up soon, promise. Until then, how bout them Lady Huskies Pat?

Austrailian Cyclist Jobie Dajka found dead…I have no clue who this is, but I’d imagine it’s probably pretty big for the sport. CycleDan, maybe you could shed some light? Rest in Peace.

Good to see the Bengals don’t shy away from their team blueprint. “Final question. Have you been arrested in the last 2 years?”

Homer Simpson: “I never noticed how boring baseball was without beer.” Well Blue Jay fans will.

Oh also…A bunch of guys declared for the NBA draft, baseball was played last night, hockey playoffs are pretty much set, and the Rockets are better without T-Mac.

LANE KIFFIN NEWS!!! Apparently he’s installed “Loaf Cams” in the workout rooms to see who isn’t working hard enough…Sure. According to most state statutes that’s called video voyeurism…and is usually punishable up to 15 years. Perv.

Here’s all you need to know:

    Lakers over Kings.
Sharks over Avs in SO, Sharks having their best year ever, but Detroit’s 124 points in 06 is safe.
    Dodgers lost to Padres.
    Angels lost to who cares.

Let’s get ready for some big boy playoffs!

“Loaf Cams”, that’s great. Professional athletes should be required to have something to do with that in their contracts.

Leastern Conference. wish the Red Wings got to play the Islanders and Tampa 5 or 6 times a season.

Never heard of that cyclist from Australia. Sounds like a sad story where he couldn’t get over his drug dependency issues.

He was a track cyclist and there are about 20 different events each year, each with their own world champion so I only am familiar with a couple of the riders from other countries. I follow road cycling more.

Detroit’s a better team, Boston has a better goalie. That said 60% chance Detroit makes the cup finals (30% for San Jose and 10% for other) but Boston probably has a 20% chance because the east is scarily even.

So the UConn women won and Louisville actually only lost by 22 points which was much closer than the two previous blowout losses to UConn.

The thing is that it would be impossible for a team to be that dominant in men’s basketball in my opinion. It seems there are a relatively small number of elite women’s players and they all go to a few schools. Even if you had the top 5 players in men’s hoops, the team would probably lose a couple of games on an off day.

UNC was definitely the odds on preseason favorite being a unanimous preseason #1 and they also were #1 again towards the end of the season. In the middle they lost some games with lackluster play. Lawson was hurt and they tanked out in the ACC tourney. However they were just using the first 32 or so games for a warmup for the NCAAs where they really turned it on.

I don’t think we will see an undefeated men’s national champion again.

I know we never speak women’s sports but how you you not acknowledge what may have been the most dominant single season team performance in the history of sports. UConn’s womens team is unreal, 39-0 and winning every game by more than 10.

Well it is time for me to start caring about the NHL and NBA. I haven’t watched more than 10 minutes of a game in either league yet. They watered down the regular season so that a casual fan like me doesn’t care. However I enjoy playoff hockey and basketball.

    that’s why.

CMFost, see my previous post. While it was a historically dominant performance, I think different dynamics are involved in the women’s and men’s game.

The other reason that we don’t talk about women’s basketball is that they suck. No seriously, they’re terrible. I tried watching a game or two this year just to make sure it’s still true and it is. In short, they can’t dribble, shoot, play defense, pass, or drive. Everything is clumsy and they turn the ball over in unforced ways about 20 times a game. It’s terrible. If people want to truly know how bad it is they could look up the old Sports Guy running diary where he took his daughter to a WNBA game.

It’s hard enough for me to watch men’s college basketball because the guys are on such a lower level than those in the NBA, to watch women would be crazy.

I’m actually pretty good. I played high school ball and got better thereafter. Not like I played at Maryland or anything, but I have them beat on shooting, passing, and court smarts at the very least. I’m sure they are faster and probably are better handlers and defenders though. Too bad I’m pretty much done now that I jammed by left leg (yes, like a jammed finger, but a whole leg) playing ball in Queens over the summer.

The very worst men’s division 1 team would beat the UConn women by 40.

Jammed left leg? come on! Your gonna try and tell a guy who has f’d his knee up as many times as I have that your left leg is jammed and can’t play?

  • cycledan says:

I agree on most of the comments on women’s hoops except for the shooting ability. Granted I haven’t watched too much but they seemed to shoot pretty well. I once saw a challenge between a top women’s basketball player and a men’s player on TV. The male won but the woman made it pretty close. No doubt any division I team would win by 40.

How about a division III team? Would a middle of the road Division III men’s team beat the UConn women? I think they would.

    (Quote)

  • knightwhosaysni says:

Dan, they only shoot better because they’re shooting a smaller basketball.

Any men’s team no matter what division would beat the best Division I college woman’s team.
