The Morning After: March 27, 2009

By sparty

The Morning AfterWe sure had some tight contest yesterday. Epic match-ups took place, and a couple of them came down to the last minute.  Oh, and there were some basketball games that took place.

Before we get to that, let me inform you that voting opens up at 8am this morning for round 2 of Movieology.  This will allow for voting took take place for most of the weekend. Polls will close on Sunday at 23:59.59.

We have 4 teams advancing to the Elite 8 after last night.  UConn told everyone to shut-up last night.   I am starting to think they are the team to beat.  Mizzou has officially become the darkhorsePitt received a scare, but moves on.  And my favorite: Dook Sucks.

This might ruffle the feathers of some Catholics.

Leading off the bottom of the 1st for the New York Yankees, will be Johnny Damon Derek Jetah.  Why is Girardi messing with something that already works.?

Alfonso Soriano has a lot of speakers in his ride.  I remember the first kid who had a pair of 12’s in the back.  I was never into that. I actually enjoyed being able to hear the music I was listening too and not just: BUH BUH BUH BUH.

105-year old to throw out first pitch.  She is so going to die on the mound.   You have to be over 100 to be named Maude. By the way, why don’t they just go back to someone throwing the ball from the first row?  Too many people embarrass themselves these days trying to do it from the rubber.

Take note:  We will not see another pitcher like Greg Maddux.

Match made in hell heaven hell.

This is one of those times when the cop was a complete dick.

Torry Holt is still looking for a job,  he heads to Jacksonville.

Mikey hasn’t been around for a couple days, so here is a golf link for you.  Tiger is 2 shots back.

Another reason to legalize it; Drinking worse than Marijuana.

Where the Wild Things are” is a movie? Yes, yes it is.

In the spirit of our Movieologoy, here are 100 movies to see before you die.  Rocky and Raging Bull made the list.  Will that sway your vote?

Wow, Whitlock makes himself out to be a complete jerk in this article. The following blurb was completely unnecessary. We get it, you hate Albom and Lupica because they are the SPORTS REPORTERS.

Journalists and media outlets are all looking to build a brand. I like to write about the intersection of sports and race, sports and social issues, sports and strip clubs. Mitch Albom developed a multi-million-dollar career writing about dead people you meet in heaven, dead people who offer amazing advice in concise, quotable blurbs and professional basketball players who plan to attend Final Fours. Mike Lupica positioned himself as the voice of Connecticut suburbs celebrating Mark McGwire’s Summer of ‘98, demonizing Barry Bonds’ Summer of ‘03 and authoring novels that cause Dan Jenkins to blush in embarrassment.

Let it go man, let it go.

Finally…the Icon is really good.

Remember that voting begins at 8AM. Tell your friends, co-workers, your boss, your family, cat, dog. I don’t care. Just get to the polls people!!! (Here’s the updated bracket; click to enlarge.)

We have “where the wild things are” on DVD, a cartoon from the 70’s. One of my least favorite of my kids’ DVDs. Cartoons from the 60’s and 70’s suck.

Uh, the reason that Jeter is batting leadoff is because he has hit into 45 double plays in the last 2 seasons. You don’t want that batting second.

    And, define “working”?

Working in the sense that the Yankees led the MLB last season in games in which they scored less than 3 runs?

All Sports Reporters ever did was piss me off when I turned on ESPN Sunday mornings ready for Sportscenter and had to wait for that awful show to get over with.

yeah, Felix Pie should bat leadoff.

but Jeter and Damon are similar hitters. I could see Damon GIDP just as often if you flip-flop them. Besides, Brett Gardner should be leading off by the end of the year. He won’t, but should.

I agree that the paragraph in Whitlock’s article was unnecessary but the rest of the article was pretty good in my opinion. What schools get busted for is usually insignificant compared to their overall violations that they hide much better.

Just heard on WFAN (660 AM in NY City) this morning about a father who was upset that his kid was playing in the outfield during PRACTICE. So as a result, he punched the assistant coach in the mouth 3 times and then stood over him cursing at him.

I think it is time we sent assholes like that to jail for some serious time like at least one year. In addition, there should be a restraining order against him attending any children’s sporting events for the next 5 years or something like that. I am just sick about asshole parents trying to live vicariously through their kids.

On another note, the parents of the kids of the basketball team I coached were some of the nicest people you will ever meet. We tried really hard to have them all play equal times, I tried to be constructive when I yelled and really tried to not be negative. It made the whole coaching experience really enjoyable. I couldn’t imagine what I would do if I had a parent like that guy.

Yeah, that makes it all allright. Idiot. Parents like this make me worry about what it’s going to be like when my older son starts playing organized sports.

Just to give you my layperson psychobabble response: The people are upset with their own lives. Somehow they think that they could have been something better like – say – a professional athlete earning millions of dollars. So they figure they are going to make their kid into a great athlete and be there every step of the way for them.

When the coach of their little league team doesn’t think that their son is the next Roger Clemens they let all their worldly frustrations out on them for getting in the way of their dream. There are a lot of angry and frustrated people out there who are not very realistic about reality.

Have a whole bunch of people coming over tonight to watch the Syracuse game. One friend is a die hard fan. Other few guys are Syracuse fans by association. Also will have a bunch of kids. I am not getting up during the game though so I have to be home with pizza and food before 7 I figure.

The game will be a toss-up. I see lots of scenarious where Oklahoma could dominate and I also see scenarios where Syracuse could dominate. I just love this time of year.

By the way, UConn didn’t dominate Purdue, it was a very close game for a while. I was really surprised how Missouri beat Memphis. Memphis didn’t give up 80 points all year and then they give up over 100! Also, I picked my alma matter, Cornell, to win in the first round just for fun – over Missouri. Ooops. That killed my brackets.

cycledan – About 20 years ago I coached youth soccer for about 5 years. Boys ages 12-15. It was a select team so the best of the best in the club. Very competitive and we traveled a great deal throughout Florida and the southeast. I have to say that, like you, I was fortunate to have a great bunch of parents that let me do my thing and were very supportive of their kids. Unfortunately I didn’t always see that with our competition. I don’t have kids and at my age I likely never will, but I saw enough BS that if I ever do I’ll be quite different than most parents when it comes to youth sports. What’s really funny is that most of these over-zealous vicarious-living idiots don’t blink when their kid fails a test in school, but miss a penalty kick or a free throw and they are unforgiving. And the way they treat the coaches is even worse.

I really need the Spartys to pull through tonight! I’m still leading my bracket. The spousal unit had Xavier and I think that killed his right side in his office pool. He has more $$ at stake, but Superwife may pull through.
