The Morning After: March 23, 2009

By mikeychx

The Morning AfterHow is your bracket doing this morning? Not too bad? Are you out already? Is it too chalky for you? For the first time I can remember in a really long time…I actually have a shot at winning one. What may I get if I do win one? Hopefully Trey’s Beta-Max collection….I didn’t get in on a “bracket betting pool”  this year. Go figure…the one time I don’t pay is the time I actually get a shot. My secret? Listening to the experts at four different sites. Anyways… commenter Rekcalsa is leading, Sparty author and betting guru BigD is in second…yours truly in third at the Sparty and Friends pool….

I have 13 of the Sweet 16 picked correctly. ESPN, where we are hosting the Bracket, had over 5M entries…and across the bottom line on the ESPN television super channel – you learn there are almost 7K people with perfect Sweet 16s. Do  you realize that is only about .0014 of the people who entered? Here’s where you standSo just where the hell have I been? Busting my ass…hopefully I will be back to normal in a day or two. I have missed the commenting and banter..by the time I get here at night – you guys seem to be long gone or my fingers are too tired to type…I missed all the good tourney talk…now I gotta wait three days to get in on the action…again. Wish the could spread these games out so you have something to watch every night. We will however get the NIT back in action as the final eight go at it tonight and tomorrow. I wonder how I am doing in that bracket?

Well – all of my bitching about the month of February being so crappy for sports finally reached Roger Goodell’s desk. He is determined to keep me happy…and he is thinking of starting by moving the NFL Draft to February. Sure, economics play a role…but it’s mainly a move that will shut me up. Not to mention make Tampa a very happy city by getting te Senior bowl and the East-West Shrine game in one spot. I suggested televising Cheerleader tryouts (SFW …as in AOK)…but I guess this all will have to do.

Speaking of the NFL…Matthew Stafford is starting to get a little too hyped for his own good. He does’t throw at the combine…he wow’s them in the Wonderlich…all the classic signs of a future first round bust.

I watched the World baseball Classic for the first time ever last night. I along with all of the Exec’s at ESPN are bummed becasue we will not see the USA again in the final…Japan kicked our ass last night. The WBC has serious problems for the US…all other nations point toward winning this event – while the US looks at it as extended Spring Training. Our players do not care about the Olympics…what makes you think they care about the WBC.

I have a Twitter account…but I will admit I don’t get it yet. Seems to be a big deal if you are being “followed” but – when I was following a few blogs and CRM…I seeemed to keep checking the Blackberry for meaningless text messages. (No offense CRM). I mean…do I really give a Shhhhhh if Shaq posts a glorified text message at half time? Am I missing something? Why is this news? Don’t get me wrong – I have all the technology in the world in my life…just don’t get the Tweet…anyone care to fill me in?

While we are on the subject of the Big Tweeter….Shaq> LeBron?

There was some professional basketball this weekend. Scores hereCurrent Standings Here….Studs and Duds to fill in the blanks this afternoon. Speaking of Studs…what will it take Dwight Howard to get it to the next level?

If I was A Rod…I think I play anywhere but New York…The news just won’t stop with this guy.

Reteif Goosen wins in Florida….Tiger returns this week at Bay HillKyle Busch wins in Bristol.

Get ready for another great day here at Sparty and Friends…all of the MLB Previews you WANT to read start to kick in this week Red Sox today Cubs tomorrow….oh I am sorry – I guess they are the ones I want to read. TWTWCBB will cover the tourney so I will Leave more tourney news untouched. As usual…feel free to slap some of your own links in the comments below…I know I appreciate them

Mikey is a Senior Editor at Sparty and Friends…even though I have yet to get one email from this tag at the bottom of the post – I will continue to tell you if you need to email me you an can do so by utilizing the mikey@spartyandfriends.com email address.

I think we can finally put to rest the garbage idea that the ACC is anywhere near as good as the Big East. I’ve said it all season, Wake Forest was a joke.

The only think keeping me from taking them to win in the first round was that it was easier to knock them out in the second round.

I’d like to see that happen for bracket purposes, but if Aldrich has another game like yesterday’s that will make things very interesting.

  • sparty says:

Aldrich will not have a game like that against our bigs. Did ya see how great a game that Gibson had for USC? No you didn’t, because he sucked.

Twitter is for the same people who post on their facebook pages things like “Johnny is going out to eat a hamburger tonight.” Just pathetic and does anyone really give a shit. Basically people who are into watching others on reality shows want to be in one themselves and kid themselves that the little details of their lives are actually interesting to someone else.

Sure, to a certain extent we are somewhat interested in other people’s lives but give the blackberry a rest every time you take a good dump or wash your car.

  • cycledan says:

Damn, just checked over my NIT bracket and saw that I forgot to put San Diego State as the winner of the 2nd round game. Just left the slot vacant. Well as long as Davidson beats Creighton in the finals then I am still good.

Shanoff is killing the Tourney becuase its been stale and predictble, what he fails to realize is becuase there haven’t been that many upsets, we get to see great match-ups with the high seeds, nothing wrong with that I say.

  • cbh49er says:

People who are saying the tournament is boring are casual fans that haven’t really been watching.

Tons of games were down to the wire, many of the favorites were tested. There were exciting finishes all 4 nights, people just have it in their brains that games aren’t exciting unless they are a buzzer beater or some no name is winning. Tournament has been good so far.

I don’t use Twitter but don’t think people that use it are dumb. What they choose to do is whatever to me.

For marketing purposes Twitter could be very effective, especially for people trying to start a new business and looking to easily connect with others that might have similar interests.

    cbh49er,
I would have liked to see some Cinderellas in the sweet 16 but agree, we are in for some amazing matchups this coming weekend. I was glued to CBS during their coverage and think they are actually doing a good job covering the games.

I really want to see Memphis-UConn and UNC-Syracuse among other matchups.
