The Morning After: March 21, 2009

By sparty

The Morning AfterThere is no better 4 day stretch than the opening 2 rounds of March Madness.  Nothing but basketball from lunch time until bed time each day.  My wife even understands that I am going to be pretty much useless after 12pm today.  She actually encouraged her mother to come over and take my son out so that I could just watch the games.

Things were looking pretty dull in this years NCAA Tournament of 64.  No major upsets had taken place through the first 29 games that took place over Thursday and Friday.  Who knew that we were going to have to stay up late on Friday to finally see some drama?

The theatrics were not happening in Minneapolis, as Michigan State handled their business against Robert Morris.  The Spartans and Colonials were tied at 30 a piece with about 5 minutes left in the first half, then Sparty decided enough was enough and went on a 21-0 run that went into the 2nd half.

There was something brewing in Dayton.  Even though Ohio State had a distinctive home court advantage, if wasn’t enough to overcome the Saints of Siena.  I don’t care what the seeds say, this was a big time upset as the Buckeyes gave this game away with terrible perimeter defense at the end of regulation and both OT’s.

While the Buckeyes were choking away a game, the Badgers were busy strangling Free Shoes U.  Wisconsin enforced their style of basketball on the Seminoles, and upset #5 FSU in OT.

The biggest surprise of the tournament involved former #1 Wake Forest.  They were not only beat by #13 Cleveland State, they were blown out.

Pitt survived a scared,  and Arizona proved they belonged in the tourney.

The rest of Day 2 scores.

What did we learn in the first couple days of the tournament? The SEC and the ACC suck.

Coach Calhoun will be back on the sidelines tonight coaching UConn.  A little heads up; in the 1999 and 2004 tourney, coach Calhoun missed games due to illness and then the Huskies went on to win the National Title.

Here come the Celtics, and KG is back.

Who needs Rasheed, Rip, Stucky or AI when you play the Clippers?

Shaq gets fit by lifting his trainer.

The USA had a bunch of sissies on their team for the WBC.  Evan Longoria is  no sissy.

The NHL has done so much to open up scoring in the league, yet the best player is just scoring his 50th goal now?  Gretzky was netting #75 at about this time back in the day.

Is Fox going to give up the BCS? I can think of 4 letters…

Matthew Stafford and his cannon.

Stephen Hawking’s wants to write stories for kids.  Have him read it to them and they might have nightmares for life.

See ya at gametime!

First? At 8:54?? Everyone must be beat after late-night basketball.

I for one, am thoroughly disgusted with the Buckeyes. Their defense was horrendous in the stretch. You could tell some of them were just beat.

Gotta give love to the local boys of Cleveland State. They dominated that game.
I had MLB Network with the Royals playing, Cleveland State and Ohio State all at once. Towards the end, while I was trying to watch the Cleveland State game to stay away from the stress level of the Bucks’ game, they’d cut in with it! I was screaming at Greg Gumbel to go away.
Needless to say, my homerific bracket completely collapsed on the Midwest corner. I am currently holding a weak first place right now, but it will soon be gone. I need a Louisville upset, since 7-15 people have them winning it all.

you can’t learn something that you already know.

The Florida St choke job was the only thing that really hurt last night. Unreal…

Cleveland St played well last night, but Wake is just too young. Anyone who watched the ACC this year could see an upset coming at the first sign of trouble. It just so happens that trouble came in the first minute of the game when Cleveland St jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

Look for my boys to play Memphis tough today and lose in a close one.

Oh, and Dino Gaudio sucks. Not quite on a Oliver Purnell level, but rapidly approaching. I mean, make a fucking adjustment one time; have a game plan.

Once again my home team bias for BC has sunk my bracket…they looked awful…USC vs Michigan State should be a great 2nd round game…
