The Morning After: March 12, 2009

By mizerle06

Good morning, all!  Happy Thursday!  We are smack in the middle of college roundball tourneys…which is great for me since I’ll be at home most of the day – you may cue your jealousy now if you haven’t already.  The BEast is in day 3 of its tourney, the Big 12 and PAC 10 are in day 2, and the ACC, Big 10, and SEC all begin play today – somebody(s) around here wrote something about all that.

You know what happened today a long time ago?  Well, Urban took over the papacy from Victor back in 1000 (not that Urban, Trey).  Some beisbol stuff happened on this day as well – ground was broken for Boston’s 1st American League ballpark in 1901, the Huntington Ave Grounds; the New York Highlanders were approved as members of the American League in 1903 after being moved to New York from Baltimore (oh yeah, they were renamed the “Yankees” ten years later; maybe you’ve heard of them); in 1951, MLB’s 2nd commissioner Happy Chandler was voted out of office partially due to his support of integration in baseball and the backing of Jackie Robinson’s career with the Dodgers.  The NBA also had something happen on March 12 - some not-black dude named Larry Bird dropped 60 points on the Atlanta Hawks (18 in the 4th quarter).  And, in other relevant historical events, the Dow closed above 500 for the first time this day in 1956.  Fittingly, the Dow will close below 500 by March 12, 2010.

Doug Towey of CBS passed away.  You know him as the man responsible for getting One Shining Moment on air.

You can add Toronto Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson to the list of head coaches that have gone crazy on the record.

Has someone been a bad boy and lied about his age?  The US Consolate in Santo Domingo seems to think so and wants an investigation from MLB.  Quick; get your Congress-person on the phone!

Curious about the upcoming ACC tournament?  This should answer all your questions.

Have you all heard anything about Roger Clemens using steriods?  Me neither.

The USA team lost to the Venezuelans in the WBC yesterday.  Jeter needed an error by the Venezuelan 3B and then was promptly thrown out at 2nd trying to steal…what an overrated punk.  Despite Jeter’s best efforts to ruin the tournament, the USA will move onto the 2nd round.

Who wants to write the perfect apology for Michael Vick?

DeMarcus Cousins committed to Memphis earlier this week.  Of course, we had this for you back in the day.

Dwayne Wade is still on fire.

Chris Paul’s pretty good too.

Andre Smith has apologized and will now work out for teams.  (Read: Andre Smith realized how much money he cost himself and is trying to get it back.)

Martin Buser is leading the Iditarod…here’s the listing of the field of mushers.

And you thought curling was boring. Yeah, still is.

The Magic are officially a lock for the playoffs and the resulting early exit.

There’s some BCS wheelin’ and dealin’ that’s been happening.

Here’s hoping you all have a good Thursday.  And, stick around!
