The Morning After: March 6, 2009

By sparty

The Morning AfterI chose to ignore the big story out of Major League Baseball yesterday, mostly because I figured more information would trickle out as the day went on, but also because we had a busy day here at Sparty & Friends.  I don’t think we had that many posts in one day since football season. Must be because it isn’t February anymore, right Mikey?

The BIG story was surrounding Alex Rodriguez and his injured hip. Originally it was reported that he just need to have a cyst looked at.  However, during his examination, it was discovered that he has a torn labrum.  As of right now, A-Rod and the Yankees have opted against surgery and will try rest and rehab. If things don’t workout, the Yanks could lose him for the majority, if not all of the season.  I was speaking with my father about this yesterday on the phone and he warned they better not rush him.  He told me the last star player they rushed was never quite the same after a similar injury.  That player was Mickey Mantle.

So who do the Yanks have to play 3rd base with A-Rod out?  That would be their very own Crash Davis, Cody Ransom.  Cody has had brief stints in the majors, but not very successful.  Johnny Damon says that he is the best athlete on the team.  See the video for why:

As much  of headache as Manny is, he is still worth every penny.

6 finger baby has scouts drooling? Not sure which is more gross. One correction from the article. Rob Nen was the one closing games for the Marlins in 1997, not Antonio Alfonseca.

This is one way of smuggling 1638 gallons of vodka.

Here is a pretty great collection of AT&T ads back in 1993 that gave us a heads up on what gadgets we would be using today. I remember a lot of them and thinking how cool it would be to have some of these things:

That was not just some normal heckler sitting behind President Obama last week at the Wizards game.
The First Lady is a fan of wrestling.

Since Will Leitch is no longer the Editor at Deadspin, there is no one to protect Shanoff from posts like these.

I would love to see Versus challenge ESPN at some point down the line. But right now they say that is not in their plans.

Maybe you heard that TO is a free agent. Well nobody wants him. When I say nobody, I really mean nobody.

If you guys want to ask the man at EA Sports a question, now is your chance.

For all you football players out there that read us (do we have any?) and still have big dreams, follow this to reach your goal.

Iverson says he is okay with coming off the bench. Hey Coach, stick him at the far end of the bench.

We continue to be disappointed in Rudy Gay. Patphish was much more in 2006.

College Mascot Dream Team.  Guess who made the starting lineup!?

I am a little video happy today, I posted the following video before, back when we first made the switch to WordPress from Blogger. It is a classic. Please turn down your speakers. Do not let your kids here this.

Since I used 3 videos I guess I have to include this. Happy Friday.

For fantasy baseball purposes I hope A-Roid has surgery and is done for the year. I don’t want to be stuck with the decision whether or not to draft him.  (Quote)

    not this weekend, john.  (Quote)

Yeah, I’m anxious to see it, but I’ll probably wait a week and avoid the rush.  (Quote)

I am not worried about the Mickey Mantle comparison. I think doctors used stone knives to operate and stitched people up with deer sinews back in those days.
I have a torn meniscus cartilage in my knee. I rehabbed it and never had surgery despite the fact that the first doctor had me scheduled for surgery. Not saying that has anything to do with A-Rod but many people who have played sports have torn cartilage in their knees or hips and don’t do anything about it.

I find Joba’s last two performances more troubling. Hopefully there is something wrong right now and he will fix it by the time the season starts. If not, Joba back to the Pen (might not be that bad) and Hughes into the rotation.  (Quote)

Wednesday the CYO basketball league starts their playoffs for my son’s team that I am helping to coach. I also have tickets to see Syracuse play in the Big East Tourney at MSG. However, 6 of the 10 teams have byes and probably won’t play Wednesday. If they did it by record, we would have a bye but they just do it randomly.

I will feel pretty bad if I miss my son’s game so I probably won’t go to the BE tourney. Well Jim Boeheim probably won’t notice my absence but my son will.  (Quote)

Mike Lowell had the torn labrum surgery last October. That should give Yankees fans an idea of how long it will take A-Roid to come back.  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

cycledan-they had mickey rest, and he re-injured himself. the difference now is that they know more about rehabbing injuries than they did back then.

Joba had a rough spring last year too. all he has been doing is throwing fastballs. building arm strength. not worried.  (Quote)

Anyone think that Mantle’s propensity for being a boozehound play a part?  (Quote)

  • sparty says:

of course. but Mantle wasn’t shooting himself up with roids either.  (Quote)

ill–What kind of card are you looking at?  (Quote)

  • cycledan says:

    ill,
If you just want to get a card for a notebook computer to connect to a WiFi (802.11) network in your house or office, that is different than if you want to also connect to a cellular network. For a cellular network, you obviously need to pay a monthly fee for the ability to connect. Some cards are dual mode and allow connect to either 802.11 networks if they are there or a cell phone network if a wireless LAN is not available.

If the box says the card is 802.11b and g compatible that means it uses the 2.4 GHz band. Some cards say dual band and use the 802.11a protocol as well that is at the 5GHz band. That is important if there are a lot of other users at the 2.4G band so you don’t have interference. There is also something called 802.11n that deals with multiple transmit and receive antennas but in general is less important unless there is an 802.11n network to which you are connecting.

As far as brand goes, don’t worry too much. They all use the same basic internal chips to connect. Going with Linksys is never a bad idea since you know you can get any drivers or help off their website.  (Quote)
