I am just going to assume for one second that all of you saw Iron Man last summer, and would agree with me that it was the second-best movie of the season, behind The Dark Knight. I would even go as far to say that those two movies last summer were the best comic book movies of all time, followed closely by the first two Superman movies. I was never really a big fan of the Spidey movies, and the all the Batman movies before Batman Begins were poorly written and produced. Anyway back to what I was talking about. If you stuck around for the credits of Iron Man, you saw something really really cool. Well, I got some really good news. If you didn’t see the movie yet, boomark this post and comeback to this link after you do. Unless you rather be spoiled.
We need to be careful about how we word things about Erin Andrews. She will come after you. She seems like a pretty cool and classy chick, so I wouldn’t dream of it.
Hip…Hip…Jorge! Good to see you feeling better.
Get your new Yankee cap! John, I already have yours on the way.
The Yanks ban A-Rod’s cousin from team facilities. Hey Alex, I know he is blood and all, but say goodbye for awhile.
I thought the Post was talkig about that “other” rumor about Mike Piazza.
Tim Linecum is one hell of a deal for the Giants. 650k for one of the best pitchers in baseball
Don’t ask Ned Colletti if the Dodgers are close to a deal on Manny. He has no clue.
Rasheed Wallace is not going to get an automatic suspension, even though he received his 16th technical foul on Wednesday. He ended up having couple rescinded earlier in the year. This is good, I guess. Now they can beat Orlando to end the losing streak. Yeah, it’s ending in Orlando, Trey.
Gibril Wilson signed a huge contract last year with the Raiders following the Giants Super Bowl. He was cut almost one-year later, and has already signed another big deal. This time with the Phins.
Shaun Rogers wants to be fat, that is why he doesn’t want to play for Mangini
So Tiger didn’t win his first event back. Who is taking him at the next tourney? *raises hand*
Peyton gets to put his hands under his ass for 3 more years.
Sexy Rexy is leaving the Windy City.
Alyssa Milano is writing a book about baseball? Do we hear about all the times she was driven home?
Our buddy JROD really loves Ozzie Guillen. Here is reason #2613.
Mike Vick is coming back soon. I’m telling you, Kick. Returner.
This is why Donald Fehr is such a dick. Pun completely intended.
If you missed LeBron’s underhand halfcourt shot, here it is again.
What if all players went to college?
Please, how can anyone (looking at you Big D) think anybody but Piper is the best?

Haynesworth to Washington – Stomps on Dan Synders head. GatorTrey(Quote)
are team allowed to talk to players prior to late last night? sparty(Quote)
oh yeah, Michigan just earned themselves back into the tourney by knocking off Purdue. One more win by Michigan State and we are Big Ten Champs! sparty(Quote)
I think so, as long as they are free agents. Just can’t sign. GatorTrey(Quote)
Probably, can’t lose out though…more later GatorTrey(Quote)
I only saw Iron Man once, so I vaguely remember something at the end of the movie. I’m opening up itunes now so I can scroll to the end. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
ooooo, do we get a bracketolo-trey? sparty(Quote)
Yes we do. GatorTrey(Quote)
OK, I didn’t see that at the end of Iron Man. I must’ve been thinking of another Marvel movie, where Tony Stark makes a cameo at the end of the movie. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
I love it when filmmakers put cool stuff at the end of the movie. Most people leave the theater when the credits are scrolling. The wife and I usually stay until the end, wait for the bonus scene. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
Tony Stark made a cameo in da Hulk. john(Quote)
Stan Lee has complete creative control of the Marvel movies now. he is getting it all done right. sparty(Quote)
The comments under the Yankees hat article are funny. Overreact much? john(Quote)
I never saw the new Hulk. Didn’t want to after the first one. Stark must’ve been in some other one, Fantastic Four or Spiderman, maybe? Fiesta Trio(Quote)
Could have been the Hulk, I may just remember him from the trailer.
Stan Lee has done wonders with the new movies. I’m not a comic book fan, but I like these new movies. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
I just wonder if everyone will get Marvel movied out in a year or two. Seems like they have 2 or 3 Marvel movies coming out every year over the next 5 years or so. john(Quote)
I knew I was going to wake up to the Haynesworth news this morning. I don’t really know how to feel. It stinks of the same ol’ Snyder era signings, but he’s younger than the normal FAs we go after. I’m sure he’ll play 12-14 games a year and have a big impact, I’m just not sure that impact is worth $100 million. illformula(Quote)
nah. Comic book movies are fun, and people will keep going.
What athlete most reminds you of Thor? sparty(Quote)
It’s possible, but how many Bond or Friday the 13th movies are there? If they are well made, they should be able to flood the market. Not that the Friday the 13th series is well made. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
ill-until this last year, Haynesworth was known only for being an ass. this was his only really good season. so yeah, I would be Jeremiah Trotter concerned. sparty(Quote)
Knightro reminds me of Thor. Fiesta Trio(Quote)
I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head with long blonde hair. john(Quote)
sparty – I just don’t have the high expectations that would allow me to be concerned. Skins’ fans are numb to the money anymore… It’s just all really sad. I’m fully prepared to take a WR with the 13th overall pick in the draft. illformula(Quote)
Officially, teams cannot even talk to free agents before the signing period starts. Unofficially, everyone knows it is happening and is a huge deal at the combine. There was an article last week talking about Dan Snyder having dinner with Haynesworth’s agent in Indianapolis.
All in all, I think it is an awful deal. The fact that we’re 50/50 on if he will be an impact player or just be a lazy slob with a lot of guaranteed money makes the deal risky. Further, why do you give him the most guaranteed money in the league? Will he win more games for you than Tom Brady or Peyton Manning? Will he even help you win one game? The ‘Skins fallback plan was for Chris Canty, a local kid who went to Virginia. He isn’t quite the impact player that Haynesworth is, but he saves a TON of cap room to keep making other signings.
In reality, the Redskins are running scared right now. They are in danger of losing their “town” to the Washington Capitals. The Caps sold 3,000 new season tickets THIS WEEK and are filling the arena when even crappy teams like the Atlanta Thrashers come to town. Last night was a full house and an electic crowd for hosting a last place team. This comes on the heels of the Redskins having a very large season-ticket turnover this year (after 13 years on the waiting list, I finally got my chance — and declined).
/end rant….
/oops’d natsfan74(Quote)
Really big win for Michigan last night. Sure will be nice to see them back in the tournament (well, assuming they do make it). They can be a 12-13 seed that scares the crap out of someone.
And yeah, Iron Man and Dark Knight are probably my 2 favorite superhero movies. I saw Iron Man and thought “Well, there is no way Dark Knight can be better than this… ” and much to my surprise…
Although a bit surprised to see that you don’t like the Spider-man movies. Well, 3 was fucking terrible. But 2 was really, really good. As long as they don’t start making movies based on borderline superheroes that no one cares about, than this will keep going for a while. Like Sparty said, they are fun. Geoff(Quote)
Please explain X-Men 3 HawkEye19(Quote)
Washington a hockey city? That’s funny. It will always be a football city. Case in point, the Skins have sucked or been overachievers for 15yrs now and there’s still a long waiting list to get season tickets. illformula(Quote)
X-Men 3 was prior to all that, hawekeye. plus Bryan Singer left the franchise and screwed up Superman Returns. Oddly enough, the director that originally signed on for Superman Returns ended up directing X-Men 3. sparty(Quote)
Explains that. X-Men 3 was so disappointing. Doesn’t help that Halle Berry really can;t act all that well. Hopefully the Wolverine movie will be good. HawkEye19(Quote)
Wait a moment. The Tim Burton Batman movies were excellenent and the first 2 Spider-man movies were flat out amazing Johnny(Quote)
Pats sign Fred Taylor.
Fred Taylor signing > Albert Haynesworth signing john(Quote)
Agreed, John. The Mark Show(Quote)
Fragile Fred a good signing? He and Moroney can share a whirlpool in the training room. illformula(Quote)
Johnny- I liked Nicholson’s Joker, but I guess it just seemed like another Tim Burton dark freakfest to me.
I liked the first Spidey movie, and the 2nd one was visually awesome but thought the story was weak. sparty(Quote)
He’s only going to be asked to carry the ball 10-15 times a game, so it makes sense. I wouldn’t be shocked to see Maroney get cut before the season starts. john(Quote)
I think I’m one of the only people that thinks the original Batman was the best. Keaton isn’t the best batman, but Nicholson as joker was beast. I also liked the way Gotham was portrayed in the original. illformula(Quote)
Taylor is a great signing. sparty(Quote)
The first Batman was enjoyable, but the second was over the top dark and depressing. I kinds liked Batman forever just for Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face. HawkEye19(Quote)
Tommy Lee Jones did place a good Two-Face. Jim Carrey was over the top as the Riddler. sparty(Quote)
but that Two-Face character was a huge plot-hole in the first 4 movies. Billy D Williams was Harvey Dent in the first Batman. sparty(Quote)
Well Batman was supposed to be dark. I just wish that they would have let him make one more then we could have seen Lando Calrissian as Two Face
I personally thought that the 2nd Spidey had a great story. the third one though they suffered from too many villans so I’m not sure how I feel about a 4th Johnny(Quote)
They need to get rid of Kristen Dunst/Mary Jane if they do a 4th one. Only so many times I can see Spider-man rescuing her from falling. Geoff(Quote)
I never liked any of the Spider Man movies…mostly because I can’t stand Toby McGuire. john(Quote)
I never saw Spidey 3. How bad was it? HawkEye19(Quote)
BTW, if you have never heard the story about when Kevin Smith was hired to write a new Superman movie it is well worth checking out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYhLIThTvk Geoff(Quote)
not only that Geoff, she has been getting uglier and uglier since the first one. sparty(Quote)
HawkEye, I liked the 2nd one better than the first purely because of that. Ill, I like the Tim Burton Batmans as much as the newer two.
I think I like Spider-man so much purely because I relate to Peter Parker better than the super heros Johnny(Quote)
saw Spidey 3 at a drive-in, didn’t know if the movie was so bad or just trying to watch it at the drive-in sucked. haven’t had the urge to rent it to see it again sae(Quote)

Well of course the Superman theme song is better than the Spider-man one. That’s one of the finer pieces of music in movie history

It’s at the point now where I’m surprised to see Simmons write a (non-ESPN mag) column, instead of doing a podcast. john(Quote)

Well he’s supposed to be done with his book now so the regular columns should pick up again soon. The Mark Show(Quote)
Or what sae said… The Mark Show(Quote)

Yeah, you can be sure he’s working on a 10,000 word column about how the Marbury signing is going to doom the Celtics. The Mark Show(Quote)
My kids drag me to all the super hero movies. I would say X-Men 2 was up there with Iron Man and Dark Knight. My kids knew well in advance to wait for the end of the opening credits after Iron Man. You can catch what you missed on You Tube if they haven’t pulled it off. I am sure it is available somewhere.
I always liked Iron Man. Since Stark doesn’t have any superpowers other than possibly his intelligence, that makes me like it more. Superman to me was never as interesting as Batman. With Superman you either needed some equally powerful villain or to have Superman get exposed to Kryptonite in order to make the plot interesting.
The thing about Toby McGuire playing Spiderman is that Spiderman is supposed to be a young geeky wimp when he is not the superhero. Appealed to all the geeky kids reading comic books. cycledan(Quote)
Simmons writes more about the Clippers than he does the Celtics. john(Quote)
Back to sports.
As a Syracuse fan, I looked up the NCAA football recruiting rankings on rivals.com.
http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?Year=2009&Page=5&PosType=0&Sort=0
Syracuse is 117 out of 145 or so teams. Changing coaches doesn’t help a recruiting class but I don’t know if I see Syracuse pulling out of their mess. Sad when the basketball team will average the same attendance as the football team. College sports are frustating for the weaker teams since the top players want to go to the top programs and it is really hard to turn programs around. It seems, once a perennial loser turns things around, the coach will get paid insane amounts of money by another program and then recruiting falls off and the team dips back into the doldrums again.
One thing that made a difference a while ago was reducing the number of scholarships so that top teams couldn’t stock up on all the top players in a region. cycledan(Quote)
That has always been my problem with Superman. He just has too many powers. I mean aren’t the flying, super strength and x-ray vision enough? Does he really have to be able to shoot laser beams out of his eyes and blow cold air. And since you can’t ever really threaten him you just have to threaten the people around him and that gets pretty old pretty fast. Geoff(Quote)
Loved Dark Knight and Iron Man…didn’t see the extra at the end of the credits on Iron Man…I’ll hafta see if it’s on Youtube when I get home.
Once had a teaching assistant that hated Batman because he didn’t really have any super powers. rekcalsa(Quote)
Geoff, kryptonite messes him up.
never speak ill of Superman, again. sparty(Quote)
plus his conscience is what separates him from most super heroes. whereas others don’t have a problem with killing someone, Superman does everything to not. sparty(Quote)
Why the hell did Lincecum agree to a $650K salary for this year? Was he already on contract and just got a boost? If not, that’s ridiculous.

More Calhoun
“His recent behavior was unacceptable and we request that the university take appropriate disciplinary action to reinforce the high ethical standards we have come to expect from our flagship institution,” the lawmakers wrote in a letter to UConn President Michael J. Hogan.
What I found interesting on some comments where that supporters of Calhoun were blasting the “liberals” who question his salary. I am more of a Libertarian and am fairly conservative in my views on economics. I found that a really twisted characterization. When government forcibly collects taxes from people, they have an obligation to the people to spend it wisely on not on some hairbrained earmark. If you take money from me an spend it on defense, police, fire, roads, schools and hospitals then I have no problem. I also understand that some social programs such as medicare and social security are necessary. However I used to be a resident of the state of Connecticut. Why was I FORCED to pay Calhoun’s salary?
I guess you can make the argument that supporting higher education is a reasonable cause. Then you can say that the sports programs are part of a university and make money for the university (at least basketball and football). Well I sort of feel the same way about that as I do about state lotteries. I don’t think the government should be in the gambling business and I don’t think they shouldn’t be in the sports business.
What I would rather see is that the Universities are private and instead the government steps up aid to the students who attend. cycledan(Quote)
The Piper clip made my day. It is going to be a great non-Canadian weekend!!!! knightro(Quote)
Wait how can you say that most superheroes don’t have a problem with killing somebody other than Superman? That’s one of Batman’s rules he follows. I don’t believe Spider-man kills either Johnny(Quote)
just read thru the Dark Knight Returns comics. that Batman has no problem killing, he even does his best to kill Superman sae(Quote)
all i can say is that i am pretty much do not like the current comic storylines right now.
as an espn podcast addict, simmons is too busy with the book to do columns. podcasts are apparently easier to conduct.
