The Morning After: February 24, 2009

By sparty

starbucks-instantI am a coffee drinker.  I know, not ground-breaking news, but it is true.  As you can tell by our usual morning logo, I am also a big fan of Starbucks.  My wife is an employee  (crossing fingers) for the company, and because we received a free lb  of beans each week, that is all that I drink.  I was telling Patphish the other day, that if start my day with anything else, I get a headache.

You may or may not have heard that Starbucks will begin selling Instant Coffee in their stores beginning March 3rd.  When my wife first told me, I was shocked.  How could they do this to loyal Starbucks addicts drinkers?  I told her to swipe me a sample to test this out. Sunday afternoon,  I was handed a slim bag of this instant coffee.  In fact, my wife handed it to me like it was a dime bag and she didn’t want anyone seeing.  Anyway, I added it to 8 oz of hot water and stirred it.  I then took a traditional taste testing sip (slupring the coffee to make sure it hit my entire pallatte) and to my surprise, it tasted like coffee.  Had someone given it to me, I would have thought it was just lightly brewed Starbucks.  A home run by SBUX.  Now hopefully they market it properly and start making back some damn money that they lost while trying to make overly priced breakfast sandwiches.GITC and myself touched on it briefly in yesterday’s comments, but “Boom Goes the Dynamite,” made it onto the Oscars when Will Smith flubbed his lines.  As I watched it happen I was thinking to myself, I should really go put up a post about this.  I am a damn lazy blogger. Thanks Awful Announcing.

The New  York Rangers fired coach Tom Renney and immediately found a replacement in former Tampa Bay Lightening coach, John Tortorella.  That’s right, a hockey story early.  The NHL needs the New York Rangers to succeed, that’s why this is big news.  Gretzky was a big deal back in the 80s, but hockey was never as popular as it was in the Mids 90s when the Rangers won the cup.  It was challenging basketball in TV ratings at the time (Jordan had retired, but still it is hockey).

Sidney Crosby is a punk. Enough with the hype. Ovechkin is the best player in the NHL and he lets Sid the Kid know it.

The Pistons are in a bad skid, and it isn’t about to get much better. I love my Pistons, and  this is tough to watch.

Fear the ‘Fro no mo.

The NBA might be heading to a work stoppage of their own.  Making the 2010 FA period even more important than it was already.  Gotta feed your family.

I can’t believe teams will be bidding for the services of Mikki Moore.

Blue Jay fans, remember when Vernon Wells was supposed to be an elite OF back in 2006?  Those were good times.  Now he is becoming a walking disaster.

Mickey Mantle must have been a lil tipsy when he signed this ball.  Then again, when was Mickey not sauced?  Making his greatness even better.  BTW, how the hell wasn’t he on the NY Mt Rushmore?  Dumb NY voters.  It should have been Babe, Mickey, LT, and David Tyree.

Trying to find out who might be this years Evan Longoria?  Check out these candidates from Junk Ballers.

Razzball gives you a look at the top 80 starters for Fantasy.

Greg Anderson has been ordered to court by the judge of the Barry Bonds perjury case.  But will he talk?

I guess the Vikings don’t want to win next year?  Enjoy the 4th quarter INTs.

Is there success in the future of Michael Vick? If he can still run as fast, I say he should be a kick returner.

Detroit got rid of a QB. Does that mean they are looking to draft Stafford?  Don’t do it, Detroit.  Just put in Stanton, I promise he won’t run out of the end zone.

The post at MLJ is funny, but a certain comment is even funnier. Please read through all the comments like you normally would.  Tampa Bo gives  a gem about 50 comments in.

You think the pain from the burns is bad now, just wait until you have cancer!

You want a stimulus in this country?  Make marijuana legal over-the-counter, and collect a federal tax.  Generally I am not for taxing the hell out of everything, but better than aspirin?  This would rake!

I need to do some research, but as of right now, these are some pretty good choices for hottest d-cup celebs.  (Safe for my work, maybe not yours)

Stay tuned, we have an action packed day at Sparty & Friends.  TWTWCBB returns, and we have two MLB previews to look forward to as well.  Stick around.

Not to start a political debate, or infringe on anyone’s belief, but I’m with you on the pot Sparty. The truth is I do not smoke the stuff, not my thing.

The number of criminal pot charges I have is insane, especially since it’s usually less than an ounce. It clogs the court, and you have people losing their license for two years with a guilty conviction on the charge too.

Just tax the shit out of it.

I read this site everyday but rarely comment…but I feel I have to comment about pot. I have beena long time advocate of legalizing pot for one reason: it fixes the economy, decreases murder rates (see whats going on with the Mexican drug cartels coming into the US and killing), reduces the prison population and keep law enforcement focused on the bigger criminals (rapists, murderers, etc.)

Fixing the economy: Like you guys said, tax the hell out of it. People will still buy it. Government wins.

Reduce murder rate: kid wont get shot over a small ounce of pot; no more big time drug dealers flexing their muscles and killing whoever they want.

Law enforecement: A lot of gangs are powered on drugs..yes there more than pot, but be legazing pot, its significantly reduces the cops job on busting stupid kids on the corner of the street selling pot

Prison population: Goes hand in hand with law enforecement – keep kids out of jail

I don’t think it gets legalized anytime soon, but it’s kind of fascinating to think of the impact if it ever was.

If they legalize it don’t you think there will still be people selling it in the streets to make a profit? Except now they won’t be guilty of selling illegal drugs, they will be guilty of tax evasion.

As a person who used to drink heavily but never really smoked pot other than trying it a few times, I still think it should be legalized for all the reasons above. When something is accepted by a significant percentage of the population, then it is almost impossible to make it illegal. Even most cops look the other way since it is not worth their effort. I think there are a lot of real negative aspects of smoking pot regularly and I have seen that effect on some of my friends. However I have to go the Libertarian route on that.

I love coffee but very rarely drink it. My father used to drink 9 or 10 cups of really strong coffee each day. He was always jumpy and on edge and made our family miserable. I am not sure it was only the coffee but it is like being the child of an alcoholic. Either you become an alcoholic or you stay away completely.

Also I find that when I cycle, the Accelerade with Caffeine keeps me going probably more so because I have very little caffeine in my system.

Marvin Harrison like all great football players is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that he is not great anymore. He still will be able to contribute to a team that picks him up but any WR picked in the draft will have more speed and agility than Harrison has at this point.

geoff – i’m late to the party as usual, but getting around your scenario is easy. all you have to do is make pot legal as long as you buy from a licensed retailer. at the same time, severally increase the fine/punishment for selling w/o said permit and/or buying from an unlicensed source. if these things are done properly 99.99% of the population will be buy from the licensed outlet to avoid the unnecessary risk associated with getting caught just to save a few bucks and the illegal sellers won’t have a market.

  • Shadi says:

I never smoked pot and dont think i will and i dont drink…but legalizing pot is just being fair. I dont understand the difference between pot and alcohol. Both are bad for you but ppl still drink so y not smoke. Gvmt cant bring up ‘what if you smoke and drive’, ‘what abotu the kids’, etc…same as drinking and driving…people just needs to be careful of how much they smoke, same with drinking.

We are ways away from legalizing pot but its closer. Maybe the first step is legalizing medicinal pot nationwide first. If anyone can do it, Obama can. (before this starts getting into a political debate, im an independent)

  • Shadi says:

graddawg, exactly…follow the alcohol/cigarette laws….fine anyone selling pot to minors…fine them heavily. Kids on the corner get their drugs from dealers…these dealers now will open up a legit retail establishment to sell their pot…they dont need to hide behind these kids and have them sell it.
